4.02 Confirmed Dead

- Essex, Massachusetts--Daniel Faraday crying, watching television news coverage of the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 being found, a woman, cooking for him, asks him about the plane, why he's upset, but he says he doesn't know. From Lostpedia
- The helicopter is going down, preparing, people jumping out, parachutes, Daniel jumps out, has a beacon, hears something, prepares his gun, Jack and Kate meet Daniel Faraday, he says he's there to rescue them.
- "I'm Daniel Faraday. I'm here to rescue you." Daniel
- Daniel says his helicopter crew is 4, including him, doesn't know if they jumped out before the helicopter went down, he lost his pack, so he lost his phone, but Kate and Jack have a phone, Dan calls George Minkowski on their satellite phone, says there was an electrical storm, the instruments, thinks they went down, he made contact with some of the survivors, Minkowski asks if he's on speaker phone. - Kate says not to worry, that Naomi covered for them, but Jack points out the gun in the back of Daniel's pants.
- Daniel tells them they all have GPS transponders on them, so they can find the rest of the team, asks for their help, where the rest of their people are, Jack says most are back at the beach.
- "Okay, so the boat hasn't heard from anybody else yet but er, their GPS transponders, my team and I are all wearing these, the transponders will send the locations back to the ship, and then the ship will send all locations back into the phones. - Locke and the people that went with him, are in the jungle, Vincent, going East, Sawyer says the barracks are due South, Locke says he's going to the cabin, but Hurley says it's the other way, but then quickly pretends he was talking about the airplane's cabin, Sawyer questions why, Locke says they're supposed to, tells them he's getting orders from Walt.
- Sayid doesn't see anything, but says the freighter could be approaching from the other side of the island, asks Juliet why Ben would say they'd do them harm, Juliet says Ben is a liar, or the people really intend to the them harm, asks Sayid about the guns they have left.
- They find Dan's equipment in the jungle, gas masks, Jack asks about the gun, Daniel says it's a precaution, that rescue isn't exactly their primary objective, Jack asks what is.
- "Er, okay, see, erm, rescuing you and your people. Can't really say its our primary objective." Daniel Faraday
- The satellite phone picks up a GPS signal, Dan says it's Miles, they head off to find him.
- Sawyer asks Locke about seeing Walt, Locke says that Walt said he had work to do, he was taller, that Ben shot him, left him for dead, that Walt saved him, shows him his wound, says that he'd be dead if he still had his kidney. From Lostpedia

- Kate, Jack and Daniel find another parachutist unconscious, lying on the rocks, they think he's hurt, or worse, dead, but he's just pretending, he pulls a gun on them, asks where Naomi is, the woman that Kate killed. From Lostpedia
- Inglewood, California--Miles arrives at a house, on the radio in the car, "All 324 passengers dead," he gets out of his car and goes to the door.
- "Oceanic 815, it can only be described as the worst case scenario. With the plane accounted for, and a salvage mission unlikely, authorities are confirming all three hundred and twenty-four passengers dead." Radio report
- Mrs. Gardener answers the door, he introduces himself as Miles Straume, she says the room is upstairs at the end of the hall, he says it's $200, paid in advance, cash, the woman says it was supposed to be $100, but Miles says that was before his friend at the Police Station said that her grandson was murdered, tells her not to come upstairs, no matter what she hears, there are photographs of her grandson on the wall by the stairs.
- Miles brings a machine with him, looks like a vacuum, goes into the room, feels something, shivers, appears to be possessed, he says he's not doing his grandmother any good, that he's causing her a lot of pain, that he'll tell her he's gone if he tells him where it is, a book-shelf shakes, something falls, Miles goes to look behind it, finds money, drugs, but only takes the money, says he can go now, he leaves the room. - He goes back downstairs, tells the grandmother that it worked, that he's at peace now, he gives her $100 back, says it wasn't that tricky.
- Miles says Naomi used the code, saying to tell her sister that she loves her, Jack and Kate say she wasn't killed by them, but by John Locke, who isn't with them anymore, Miles wants to go to her body, he says he'll know what happened.
- "Then why'd Naomi use the damn code? Yeah, you remember when she said tell my sister I love her, well she doesn't have a sister. That's what we're supposed to say if we get captured, have a gun to our heads. Like right now, Jack here would say tell my sister I love her, you get it?" Miles
- "Even if I took you to her body you wouldn't know what happened..." Kate "I'll know! Now take me to her body." Miles
- Ben wants to tell Alex something, but tries to get to Karl, then asks Sawyer why he left Kate behind, says in the real world he wouldn't be able to compete with Jack, Sawyer beats him up, asks why they should keep him alive, Locke says not to do it.
- "James. Look at yourself. Yes, on this Island you're brave, daring, handsome, you're someone, but if you left with them, back in the real-world a low-life scam artist like you could never compete with a first class surgeon. I think Kate was really upset when you made your choice to come with us. Thank God she has Jack there to comfort..."
- "We're keeping him alive because he's been on this Island a lot longer than any of us. Because he has information we need. And because apart from his mouth, he's completely harmless." Locke

- Miles says that they didn't kill her, that it happened the way they said.
- They see Charlotte on the satellite phone's GPS transponder, 3 kilometers from them, Miles says to go get her.
- Jack says to put the gun down, that his friends are in the jungle holding guns to their heads.
- "Because our friends are out in the jungle right now holding a gun at your head, and his head. So I'm gonna forget about the misunderstanding, just put the guns down." Jack
- Sayid and Juliet show up, guns a blazing.
- Medenine, Tunisia--A newspaper reads "815: Retrouve!" A woman asks how many different languages she has to read it in before she believes that it's true, Charlotte asks how many different languages are there, says people in their line of work are terrible at keeping secrets, she says they know about the dig, but a man says the site closed, Charlotte gives him money, says to open it, there is a skeleton in the sand, her friend asks if it's a dinosaur, but Charlotte says it's not a dinosaur, not by a few million years, that it's an Ursus Maritimus, a polar bear, in the desert, Charlotte begins excavating, finds a DHARMA collar with a logo from The Hydra, she appears to recognize it. - Charlotte wakes hanging from a tree, caught in it with her parachute, releases herself from it, into a stream below, appears to be excited about arriving on the island, looking around, Locke and the rest of the crew come upon her. From Lostpedia
- Juliet says they were worried when they didn't get back, so they went to the cockpit and track them from there.
- Sayid begins to interrogate them, asks their names, what they do, Daniel Faraday, physicist, introduces Miles, who says he collects soil samples, they're not there on a rescue mission, Sayid says that the world believes them to be dead, but they're not surprised to see them there, alive.
- Charlotte, questioning them, can't believe they're alive, asks how many of them are there, if they've been living there the entire time, if Claire had her baby on the island, has a million questions, they can wait until they get back to freighter, tells them they have transponders, the pilot was trying to put the plane down, to stay where they are, but Locke says she's coming with them, they don't want to be found. - Sayid has the satellite phone, following Charlotte's signal, they see the transponder blinking, Charlotte moving fast, but it's Vincent, Jack says Locke has her.
- Eleuthera, The Bahamas--toy plane, aquarium, a television reports that authorities released footage of sunken remains of Oceanic Flight 815, victim identification process, the pilot, Seth Norris, recovery of bodies next to impossible, identification provides closure, phone, NTSB Oceanic Hotline, supervisor, not family member, has information on the crash, says that's not the pilot, knows he always wore his wedding ring, that he knows it's not him, knows because he was supposed to be flying Oceanic 815 on that day. - On the island, the same guy, stumbling up a hill, sees the cow, takes out his satellite phone, his flare gun, and fires it.
- Locke and crew see the flare, Charlotte says they have to go, Hurley says they should, Claire says maybe they could be hurt, but Locke says she's lying, that she didn't come for them, Charlotte starts to go, Locke says she has to come with them, but Ben shoots her.
- Sawyer beats Ben again, but Charlotte is okay, she was wearing a bullet-proof vest.
- Jack and crew find Frank Lapidus, he's the pilot of the helicopter, says they got struck by lightning, he set the helicopter down safe and sound, shows them where it is. From Lostpedia
- Naomi having a meeting with Matthew Abaddon about her team, he asks if she's familiarized herself with their profiles, Dan, Miles, Charlotte, Frank, Naomi says they're the wrong people for the mission, that they have no field experience, no military training, that it will be a disaster, Matthew Abaddon says it's a high risk covert operation in unstable territory, Naomi asks what if they find survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, he says there are no survivors, that every member of the team was selected for a specific purpose, that she gets them in and out without getting them killed. - Kate and Dan bring Naomi's body on a stretcher to the helicopter, Sayid checks out the helicopter, says it will fly, there's minor damage, but the mechanical systems are in tact.
- Miles says he'll tell why they're there if he can have the satellite phone to call the freighter, he calls Regina, she says Minkowski can't come to the phone, hangs up.
- Dan wants to bring Naomi's body back on the helicopter, but Frank says they can't bring any extra weight, that he'll get her on the next run.
- Frank asks Juliet who she is, her name, says she wasn't on the plane, that he memorized the manifest, he says that she's a native, he tells Miles.
- "You know how many times I studied that damn manifest? Believe me there's no Juliet Burke on that plane. She's a native." Frank
- Miles asks where he is, says they're there for Benjamin Linus. From Lostpedia

- Locke wants to kill Ben, people object, Locke tells Rousseau to take Alex away, but Ben says that he has answers, so Locke asks about the smoke monster, but Ben doesn't have an answer for him, says he doesn't know, so Locke is going to shoot him.
- Ben, however, knows a lot about Charlotte.
- "Her name is Charlotte Lewis! Charlotte Staples Lewis. Born July 2nd, 1979, Essex, England. Parents David and Jeanette. Eldest of three, all girls. She was raised in Bromsgrove. Did her undergraduate studies at Kent. Took her PhD in Cultural Anthropology at Oxford. She's here with two other team members and a pilot. Their names Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume, Frank Lapidus. Your instinct was right, John, these people are a threat, and if you shoot me you'll never know how great a threat they were. Because I know what they're doing here. I know what they want." Ben

- "And what do you do, Miles?" Sayid "I collect soil samples." Miles "Oh, that's nice, well maybe you can help me. You say you're not here on a rescue mission, and the world at large believes us to be dead. But here we are alive and well, and you don't seem remotely surprised to see us." Sayid "[Sarcastically] Oh my God, you guys were on Oceanic Flight 815, wow! That better?" Miles
- "Sure, who are we to argue with taller ghost Walt." Sawyer
- "I saw a cow." Frank
- "Crash? The hell kind of pilot d'you think I am?" Frank
- "Tell you what, I'll give you the phone if you tell me what you people are doing here." Jack "I'll tell you what we're doing here if you give me the phone." Miles "Don't say anything about your sister." Jack
- "What's the point, that's not Naomi, it's just meat." Miles
- "Really? Because it seemed like you were about to shoot me yourself." Charlotte "What good would you be to me dead?" Locke "I feel much more comfortable now. Thanks." Charlotte
- "I guess this is the part where I'm supposed to say I told you so." Sawyer
- "What is the Monster?" Locke "What?" Ben "The black smoke, the Monster, what is it?" Locke "I don't know." Ben "Then goodbye, Benjamin." Locke
Notes:- I think Daniel Faraday doesn't know why he's upset because it hasn't happened yet.

From Wikipedia: "He established that magnetism could affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena." In this episode, Daniel Faraday comments on abnormalities in the light rays on the Island and defines himself as a physicist.
