5.01 Because You Left

1. An alarm goes off at 8:15, a man turns it off, wife says that the baby is awake, and it's his turn, he wakes up, puts record on the turntable, Shotgun Willie by Willie Nelson, gets bottle for baby, baby out of crib, feeds baby, takes a shower, shaves, brushes teeth, gets dressed, record begins to skip, he turns it off, he leaves home, in the barracks, goes to building, says he doesn't need a script, DHARMA Orientation film 2, The Arrow, Dr. Marvin Candle, given the specific area of expertise, the stations primary purpose is to develop defensive strategies and gather intelligence on the islands hostile indigenous.. guy rushes in to tell him that there is a problem down at The Orchid.

He goes to The Orchid, down the elevator, the foreman tells him they were cutting through rock, right on his specs, the drill melted, 3 meters from margin line on plans, they went through 6 carbon drill bits, last one fried, operator started grabbing his head and freaking out, they sonar imaged the wall, open chamber 20 meters in, something in there, we, the audience, can see the frozen donkey wheel on the sonar image, the foreman says that the only way to get in is to lay charges, Marvin Candle says under no circumstances, that the station is being built because of its proximity to what they believe is limitless energy, once harnessed correctly, it will allow them to manipulate time, the foreman asks to go back and kill Hitler, Candle says that the rules can't be broken, to do nothing, if they drill even one centimeter further, they'll risk releasing energy, and if that were to happen, God help them all.

At the Funeral Home, HOFFS/DRAWLAR, John Locke/Jeremy Bentham is in the coffin, Jack is still there, Ben says the van is out back, they'll worry about where they're taking Locke once they pick up Hugo, Jack says that he's locked in a mental institution, Ben says it'll be easier than recruiting the rest of his friends, Jack says that they're not his friends anymore, asks how they got here, how all this happened, Ben says that it's because he left, that they should get started. Jack in hotel room, shaving, cleaning up, Ben says after Hurley, they'll get Sun, Sayid, and Kate, Jack says he doesn't see that happening, asks when last time Ben saw Locke was, Ben says on the island, in The Orchid, that he told him he was sorry for making his life so miserable, then Locke left, that obviously Locke's visit made an impression on Jack, asks what he said to make Jack a believer, Jack says Sawyer, Juliet, everyone from the boat, everyone they left behind, Locke said they'd die too if he didn't come back, but didn't tell him what happened after the island moved, Ben says he guesses they'll never know.

9. Zodiac, Faraday, Frogurt, others with them, Daniel says they must've been inside the radius, Juliet and Sawyer on beach, they see no freighter off shore, Juliet says maybe went down, but Sawyer says no, Juliet asks about helicopter, Sawyer says it was heading for the boat.
10. Bernard appears, looking for Rose, she comes to the beach, was by the church, Bernie says they can't go back to their camp, that there is no camp, everyone wandering around, no camp left, no kitchen, all tents, food, water, gone, everything except them, Dan shows up, says it's not gone, that he never made it to the Freighter, Sawyer asks who he is, Miles says Dan is their Physicist, Dan says he needs them to take him to something man-made, something that was built, any kind of landmark, Juliet says there's a DHARMA station not far, Dan says to get moving, that their camp isn't gone, it just hasn't been built yet.
11. Kate is at home, Aaron eating breakfast, men at door, Dan Norton of Law Firm Agostini and Norton, associate with him, he's there to get a blood sample from her and one from her son, Aaron, has a Court Order signed by Judge to relinquish her blood upon being served the papers, to determine her relationship to the child, he's not at liberty to divulge the identity of his client, if she won't comply, he'll come back with Sheriff, so Kate says to come back with the Sheriff, they leave.
12. Kate starts to pack her bags, gets her suitcase, clothes, gun, tells Aaron they're going on vacation, picture of Aaron and Jack is seen when they're walking out, leaves house.
13. Sawyer tells Juliet that he jumped off the helicopter because they were running out of gas, he wanted to make sure they got back to boat, tells Dan to take a timeout, wants to know what's going on, Dan says to trust him, that there's no time to explain, he has no idea how difficult it would be to explain to him, to explain this phenomenon to a Quantum Physicist would be difficult, Sawyer is offended, slaps him, Dan says the island is like a record spinning on a turntable, now the record is skipping, whatever Ben Linus did at The Orchid station, it may have dislodged them from time, that's why their camp is gone, asks because the island is moving through time, Dan says either island is or they are, asks if everyone in group is accounted for, Sawyer says not everyone, Locke isn't.
14. "We really do not have time for me to try to explain. You have no idea how difficult that would be for me to try to explain this--this phenomenon to a Quantum Physicist. That would be difficult, so for me to try to explain whatever is happening--The Island... [sighs] think of the Island like a record spinning on a turntable... only now, that record is skipping. Whatever Ben Linus did down at The Orchid station...I think... it may have... dislodged us." Faraday "Dislodged us from what?" Miles "Time." Faraday "So that's why our camp is gone? Locke wandering around jungle, climbs hill, plane flying towards him, goes overhead, it's the beachcraft, it crashes into the jungle, he finds a Virgin Mary statue on the ground, it's the Nigerian drug plane, goes after it, gets to the plane, asks if anyone is there, starts to climb the vines on the cliff, someone starts shooting at him, he falls down, it's Ethan, he asks who Locke is, how many others on board, Locke says he didn't come on the plane, that he knows him, his name is Ethan, Ethan asks who Locke is, tells him his name is John Locke, that Ben Linus appointed him as his leader, Ethan says that's the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard, says goodbye John Locke, is going to shoot him, but there's another flash and Locke disappears.

16. Flash--dark, night, Sawyer asks Daniel where they are now, he says either in the past or in the future.

Sun in London Airport, boarding Flight 23 to Paris, at gate 15 heard over speakers, she goes to her gate, says she's flying to Los Angeles, shows her passport to the Gate Agent, who scans it, sees something suspicious, says to excuse her, Sun is brought into a holding room, gets locked in by the guard, Charles Widmore is there, says they only do what he tells them to do, Sun asks why she was brought in there, Widmore says she had the audacity to approach him in broad daylight in front of his business associates, that she showed him no respect, and that he will be respected, says she mentioned they had common interests, wants her to tell him what they might be, Sun says to kill Benjamin Linus. 18. Ben watching news in the hotel room, Police identify suspect as Hugo Reyes, member of the infamous Oceanic 6, Ben says it looks like there's a change of plan.
19. "The victim was found shot in his car on the grounds of the Santa Rosa hospital, a private mental health care facility outside Los Angeles. Police have now identified their suspect in the shooting as a patient at the hospital who escaped earlier this evening--Hugo Reyes. Now if that name sounds familiar to you, that's because Reyes was a member of the infamous Oceanic Six. Hurley and Sayid at Drive-Thru, Sayid doesn't want a fry, says man outside Santa Rosa was armed and watching Hurley, that made him an enemy, he's not taking any risks after Bentham died, Hurley asks when he became so paranoid, Sayid says if he spent the last two years doing what he was doing, he'd be paranoid too, that he was working for Benjamin Linus, Hurley asks if he's on their side now, Sayid says if he ever runs into him, whatever Ben tells him, do the opposite, the seal Sayid left is broken on the door, a man rushes out, Sayid throws him over guard rail, fights another guy inside, gets shot with darts, fights him more, throws him on knives sticking out of the dishwasher, Hurley picks up gun on the ground outside, looks over guard rail, people below see him, take a picture of him with a camera phone, Sayid pulls darts out of his neck, Hurley takes him out, says he thought it was supposed to be a safe-house, they never should've left the island. On island, walking through jungle, Charlotte asks if Widmore is looking for them, Miles says it took him almost 20 years to find it the first time, they find The Swan hatch still imploded, Dan says when they are is after their people crashed on the island, Dan says it's pointless, doesn't know when next flash is coming, by the time they get back to the beach, it could be gone, Sawyer says what if it hasn't happened yet, Juliet says they could warn them, stop them from finding the boat, Dan says that's not the way it works, that they can't change anything, even if you try to, it wouldn't work, that time is like a street, we can move forward, we can move in reverse but we cannot ever create a new street, if we try to do anything different, we fail every time, that whatever happened, happened, he knows so much about this because of his notebook, he spent his entire adult life studying space-time, his journal contains everything he's ever learned about the DHARMA Initiative, they can't stop it.

Locke was shot in the leg from Ethan, hopping through jungle, finds beachcraft after it fell off the cliff, looks inside, Virgin Mary statues, takes seat belt and ties it around his leg, he sees someone with a torch lit in the distance, man approaching, takes out his knife, but it's Richard Alpert, Locke asks him what's happening, Richard says he's bleeding to death, that he needs to get the bullet out, Locke wants to know how he knew there was a bullet in his leg, Richard says because he told him there was, Locke says he didn't, but Richard says he will, Locke says it was Ethan who shot him, Richard says what comes around, goes around, Locke asks when is he, Richard says that's all relative, Locke asks where he went when the noise, when the sky lit up, Richard says didn't go anywhere, Locke did, Richard removes the bullet, Locke says he doesn't understand, how Richard knew he was there, how he found him, Richard says he wishes there was time to explain it, but he's going to be moving on soon, and they have to go over a couple of things, first thing, clean out wound, every couple of hours, the island will do the rest, second thing, the next time they see eachother, he's not going to recognize Locke, gives him compass to give him, points north, says he needs to know in order to do what he has to do, the only way to save the island is to get his people back, that they're fine, they're already home, he has to convince them to go back, that he's going to have to die, John, flash, Richard is gone, day time again, Locke is alone.

26. The Swan, Miles asks what it was before it blew up, Juliet says it was a DHARMA station, a man named Desmond lived in it, pushing a button every 108 minutes to save the world, another flash, imploded station is gone, the hatch door is back in the ground, Juliet says they haven't found it yet.
27. Sawyer goes to the backdoor of The Swan, says he's getting supplies, there's food, beer, clothing, getting Desmond to let him in, Dan says Desmond didn't know him, they never met, can't meet, it could be anyone in there, Sawyer doesn't care, bangs on door, Dan says if it didn't happen, it can't happen, Sawyer says everyone he cares about just blew up on the Freighter, he knows what he can't change, no one comes to the door, Juliet says they should go back to the beach, it's been a long day, Miles asks why go back to the beach if there's nothing to go back to, Charlotte starts to get a nosebleed, tells Dan she's fine, Dan says to head back to the beach, that he left his backpack at the hatch. 3.20 The Man Behind the Curtain

1. A pregnant woman is giving birth in the woods, her name is Emily, something is wrong, she has a boy, she says it hurts, bleeding, her husband says no one knows they're there, carries her and the baby, a road, Portland 32 miles, a car pulls over, a woman and a man stop to help them, he says they were hiking, that she's not due yet, they're going to bring them to the hospital, Emily says to call him Benjamin, then she dies. 14. Locke says Ben is not going anywhere, that they're going to see Jacob, Ben says no, Mikhail questions Ben, Locke attacks Mikhail, Alex gives him a gun.
15. Ben is in school, the teacher, Olivia Goodspeed, doing their own volcanic reaction, says there is a volcano on the island that erupted, reaction a long time ago, gunshots ring out, an alarm goes off, she tells them to get in their positions, grabs a gun, says it's the hostiles. From Lostpedia

23. Ben runs away into the jungle, he hears the whispers, sees his mom at the sonar fence, she tells him not to approach her, that it's not time yet.

Sayid tells everyone about Naomi, Jack protecting Juliet, Sawyer plays the tape for everyone, Jack and Juliet return, Juliet says to play the other side of the tape, Ben says he's sending 3 teams to extract Kwon, the night after tomorrow, to mark the tents, Juliet says she told Jack everything after she took Sun to The Staff, Jack says he didn't tell anyone because he didn't have a plan yet.
26. Ben runs away, gets to the sonar fence, puts in code 54439, let's his bunny go through the pylons to make sure he doesn't die, he hears the whispers, Richard appears, asks if he's one of them, Ben says he left home, looking for his mom, she's dead, not on the island, that he saw her, she talked to him, she said that he couldn't go with her, tells him to go home, Ben says he hates it there, says take him, Richard tells Ben to think about it, to be patient. Ben and Locke arrive at Jacob's, a cabin, Ben says no flashlight, feels the same way about technology as Locke does, Ben gets a lantern, they enter the cabin, a room, painting on the wall, an empty rocking chair, jars on a shelf, nothing, no one is there, Ben appears to be having an imaginary conversation with himself, Locke thinks Ben is crazy, that he is Jacob, doesn't know anything about the island, putting on a show, Ben says he's too limited to see, that he know there's someone there, Locke thinks none of it is real, but then hears something, "Help me," is terrified, person appears, an eye, Locke flashes light on him, Jacob gets angry, Locke is terrified, runs out of the cabin. Ben Work Man, older, has the doll Annie gave him, birthday again, Roger and Ben run supplies to The Pearl, dad says then go to the mesa, they can drink some beers, have some father and son time, Shambala plays in the car, Ben asks dad if he really blames him, dad says he'll try to remember his birthday next year, Ben keeps looking at his watch, says putting up with him took patience, puts on a gas mask, releases a canister, then kills father, returns to the barracks, everyone is dead, Horace Goodpseed, Richard and his people there, masks, guns, the hostiles, Ben says leave dad out there. 3.11 Enter 77

1. Sawyer sees everyone carrying the ping-pong table, Hurley says Jin found while looking for firewood, they made legs, paddles and now all they need is a ball, it must've landed in the jungle when the hatch exploded, Sawyer says that he thought it collapsed.
2. Sawyer wants his Guns and Ammo magazine back from Paulo, but he says that they share things now, while carrying it wrapped around a roll of Dharma toilet paper.
3. Sayid says they're still heading North, bearing 305, Locke senses a lack of confidence, Sayid says they've been walking for 2 days following a compass bearing from Eko's stick, Locke says it's the only bearing they have.
4. Sayid is picking fruit, he hears a bell, finds a cow, a house, sees the eye patch man, calling the cow to him, it's another station.
5. Sawyer has a ball, challenges everyone to ping-pong game for his stuff back, pick their best man, they say no nicknames for a week if he loses.
6. Sayid circles the house, he says there's nothing but jungle surrounding it, there are horses, cows, fenced in, a satellite dish on top, Sayid says a dish of that size would have broadcasting capabilities for thousands of miles. From Lostpedia
7. Sayid asks Danielle if it's the radio tower, but she says no, she's never seen it before.
8. Kate asks Sayid where he recognizes the man with the eye patch from, Sayid tells her The Pearl video feed, the only way to find out who he is, is by asking him, if he's unarmed, he won't feel threatened, they cover him.
9. Rousseau says she has no interest on the man inside the house, that she survived by avoiding encounters, that she'll wait by the stream for those who survive.
10. Sayid is a cook, going by the name Najeev, meets a man named Sami, says he's Syrian, but Sami says he's Iraqi too, wants him to work for him because his chef quit, they're in Paris.
11. Sayid approaches the house, with his hands up, there is a horse, saddled, stirrups, a grey cat catches his attention, the eye patch man shoots Sayid, says he didn't cross the line, it's his land, they said he could stay there. Sayid tells him his name, he's not who he thinks he is, says he was on plane that crashed months ago, that he's unarmed.
12. Locke and Kate approach the house, tell the man to drop the weapon, he surrenders. He asks if they really crashed there, Sayid tells him over 40 of them did, Kate asks who he is.
13. "My name is Mikhail Bakunin and I am the last remaining member of the DHARMA Initiative."
14. Mikhail takes a look at Sayid's gunshot wound, spent time in Afghanistan, had experience with field medicine in the Soviet Army, tells Sayid his story while Locke and Kate investigate the station. Kate goes in the kitchen, while Locke sees a computer with a chess screen, "Ready to play? Y/N," he presses yes, the computer tells him it's his move. From Lostpedia
15. "I grew up in Kiev and joined the Soviet Army. I was stationed at a listening post at Vladivostok. After the Cold War, after we lost the Cold War, my unit was decommissioned. I was dismissed from my life in the military. And after years of conducting unpleasant actions against our enemies, I found myself wanting to do something good. So I replied to a newspaper advertisement." Mikhail "An advertisement?" Sayid "Would you like to save the world? it read. That’s how I met them, the Initiative. They’re very secretive, very rich, very smart." Mikhail "So, when did you come to the island?" Sayid "11 years now. I like computers, communications equipment, being along like a lighthouse keeper. So they put me in this station. They called it The Flame." Mikhail "What is the purpose of the flame?" Sayid " To communicate with the outside world, of course."
16. Mikhail says the Dharma Initiative all dead, initiated war against hostiles, the purge, didn't participate in it, likes being alone, after the war was over, 4 men appeared in the yard, they offered a truce, line around the alley, do not cross, he'll be left alone, they took 2 cows, never saw them again, satellite hasn't functioned for years, the hostiles were there a long time before Dharma Initiative.
17. Mikhail removes the bullet from Sayid's arm.
18. Sayid goes to see Sami at his restaurant, Sami greets him, introduces him to his wife, Amira, she says it's him, Sayid is attacked by Sami and his men.
19. Mikhail has a cat named Nadia, after Nadia Comaneci, greatest athlete the world has ever known, they have the same birthday. Mikhail stitches up Sayid's wound, he offers them some iced tea.
20. Locke plays chess on the computer, Mikhail says he's been playing it for 10 years, it's been programmed by 3 Grand Masters, and it cheats.
21. "Well, I’ve played a lot of computers and I’m pretty sure they don’t know how to cheat. That’s what makes being human so distinctly wonderful." Locke
22. Kate questions why they'd leave Mikhail there all alone, with the equipment, but Sayid says that it makes perfect sense, that Mikhail is one of them, and he's not alone.
23. Sawyer plays Hurley in ping pong, gets schooled.
24. Sayid says he noticed thick wires when he walked around the station, Mikhail says that it's the hub, they go around to other stations all over the island, Sayid asks if they go underwater, Mikhail says there's underwater beacon that emits solar pings to help guide in the vessels, submarine, Dharma Initiative used it to bring them there, hostiles have either destroyed or decommissioned it by now, Sayid says that explains how they were able to get around his position and capture the sailboat, lost it to them, killed one.
25. Mikhail wonders why they're playing a game, Sayid fights him, Kate and Locke draw their guns, Mikhail surrenders and they tie him up.
26. Sayid is being held prisoner by Sami, who brings him water, says he was a torturer in Republican Guard, he victimized his wife, Amira, arrested, harbored an enemy of the state, held for 3 months while she was questioned. Sami wants him to admit what he did, but Sayid only admits who he is, Sayid Jarrah, was in the Republican Guard, was an interrogator, but says he doesn't know Sami's wife, he can remember every face, Sami says his wife remembers, wants him to admit or he will kill him.
27. Sayid says Mikhail is not alone, the horse is still saddled, for someone much shorter. Locke says that he's checked everywhere, but Sayid reveals a trap door under a rug. From Lostpedia
28. Sami brings his wife into the room, Sayid says he didn't know her, wouldn't touch a woman, wouldn't admit to something he didn't do, bu Sami says Amira admitted to something she didn't do and he poured boiling water on her arms and hands, he beats him badly, but Sayid won't admit to torturing his wife. Amira says that's enough for today.
29. Sayid and Kate go underground, while Locke watches Mikhail, the entire place is wire with C4, Sayid finds Dharma Initiative Operations Manuals. From Lostpedia
30. Locke beats the chess game, you win, checkmate, a video begins with Dr. Marvin Candle, "Manual override complete. For pallet drop enter 24. For station uplink enter 32. For mainland communication enter 38." Locke enters 38, "The satellite dish is inoperable. Communications are down. For sonar access enter 56." Locke presses 56, "Sonar is inoperable. Has there been an incursion of this station by The Hostiles? If so, enter 77." Mikhail approaches Locke with a knife. From Lostpedia
31. Kate finds a rack of DHARMA jumpsuits, Ms. Klugh pops up from behind it and attacks Kate, Sayid stops her, Kate says it's her, she was there at the dock. Sayid asks if there's any more of them there, but Ms. Klugh is silent.
32. They bring Ms. Klugh upstairs, Locke and Mikhail have disappeared, they are now outside, where Mikhail has a gun on Locke, he wants to do a prisoner exchange.
33. Mikhail and Klugh speak to eachother in Russian. Klugh says Mikhail knows what to do, but he says they have another way out, she says they can't risk it, but he says no, she says he knows the conditions, they captured them, can't let them get into the territory, he knows what to do, it's an order, Mikhail says that there's still another way, but Klugh insists, he says to forgive him, pushes Locke and shoots her, but Sayid has his gun on Mikhail, who tells him to do it already, to finish the job, to kill him. 34. Hurley beat Sawyer badly in ping pong, tells him his mom had a table in her basement, played a lot in the instu--this place he hung out at, gives him back one of his Playboy magazines, tells him that Kate's going to be okay, she's with Locke and Sayid.
35. Locke is looking at the computer again, Kate is downstairs, Sayid questions Mikhail, who admits he wasn't a member of the Dharma Initiative, but says that everything else was true. Rousseau wants to kill him, but Sayid says they're collecting whatever is useful from the house, they have a ticket to where the Others live, they can find her daughter, Jack and maybe a way home.
36. Mikhail says that he won't help them, but Sayid has a map to the barracks. From Lostpedia
37. "I didn’t say you were our ticket, did I? This is a map showing electrical and data cabling running from The Flame, here, to a place called The Barracks, here. 38. Mikhail says Sayid will have his guard down, and he won't hesitate to kill him.
39. Sami's wife, Amira, visits Sayid with a similar cat to the one from The Flame.

But, every once in a while, he will bite me or scratch me. He does this because sometimes he forgets that he is safe now. So I forgive him when he bites me, because I remember what it is like to never feel safe. And that is because of you. So today, I ask only one thing of you: I ask you now to show me the respect by acknowledging what you did to me. That it was you who questioned me, tortured me and that you remember me." 43. Rousseau says they should kill Mikhail, but Sayid wont kill him, Locke and Kate show up. Locke says he knows why Mikhail didn't want him to beat the game, The Flame explodes. From Lostpedia
44. "What have you done, John? That place was our one hope of communication with the outside world!" Sayid "The computer said that if there was an incursion of the station by The Hostiles, I should enter 77. So I entered 77." Locke
45. Sayid says they should leave, the explosion will attract attention, he sees the grey cat again.
