A LOST Farewell with Regina Spektor Covering "No Surprises" by Radiohead

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to write up my post about All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues for this week.  Actually, I didn't get a chance to even watch the episode yet.. So, instead of completely slacking off, I thought I'd post something else in the mean-time.

Here's a LOST Farewell video that I found on YouTube, with Regina Spektor covering "No Surprises" by Radiohead. Normally I hate LOST videos on YouTube with (usually) completely the wrong (i.e. awful) music.. Okay, anything other than Michael Giacchino just sounds wrong to me. But, being that I'm a huge Radiohead fan, and I actually like this cover by Regina Spektor.. Also, I thought the video was done well. So, here it is..

LOST: The Beginning & The End

13 April 2010

Initial Reaction to "Happily Ever After"

Oh, brotha. I said that LOST would be picking up in the next couple of weeks and I'm happy to say that it definitely has. Desmond centric episodes are arguably the best of the series. You cannot deny that. You also cannot deny that the intelligent and sophisticated storytelling are not the only thing that makes the character of Desmond so uniquely and profoundly intriguing. Desmond's world is not only mythological, but it's emotionally charged in a way that is more realistic and intense than any other character on this show. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Desmond is the heart of this show. He is everything that makes it unlike any other show than there has ever been. It is not only because he has great importance to the mythology, but it's because he makes you laugh and cry and cheer for him when he gets a win. It is because, when Henry Ian Cusick is on screen and portraying the character of Desmond David Hume, you never want it to end. Not for a second. For someone that wasn't even on this show since the very beginning, I'd have to say it's pretty damn important for a character to have the ability to impact a show in such a way. For every moment that he's gone, there is something missing. Needless to say, I am glad to have Desmond back. Now, let's discuss our favorite Scotsman and yet another of his episodes that did not disappoint in the least.

  1. Jack, eye opens, just like the scene of the crash, in the jungle, surrounded by trees, but wearing a different suit, blue, he gets up, looks at a torn piece of paper in hand, which says "I wish," he hears Hurley screaming for help, screaming for Jack, he runs through jungle, he stops, waits to hear Hurley's voice again, to see which way to go, arrives at a cliff, a waterfall, sees Hurley in water beneath, he's drowning, Jack jumps in after him, swims to Hurley, who has a guitar case, using it as a flotation device, Jack saves him, they look around, Hurley says it really happened, they see Kate unconscious, laying on the rocks, Jack swims to her, checks to see if she's breathing, she wakes up, Jack asks Kate if she's okay, she asks if they're really back, Jack says yes, Kate asks what happened.

    From Lostpedia
  2. 46 Hours Earlier--in the church, they arrive, Ms. Hawking says she thought she said all of them, she says that it'll have to do for now, let's get started, they go downstairs, to The Lamp Post, through a tunnel, a DHARMA Initiative stamped door, air lock door, she turns on light, pendulum, numbers and coordinates, Jack asks what this place is, Ms. Hawking says that the DHARMA Initiative called it The Lamp Post, she says that this is how they found the island, Jack asks Ben if he knew about this place, Ben says he didn't, Jack asks Ms. Hawking if he's telling the truth, she says probably not, Ms. Hawking takes out a folder, Jack looks at photograph hanged on a chalkboard with equations covering it, the photograph is of the island, marked "9/23/54 - U.S. ARMY - OP 264 - TOP SECRET - EYES ONLY," Ms. Hawking says she's sorry if this is confusing, but to pay attention, she says that the room they're standing in was constructed years ago, over a unique pocket of electromagnetic energy, that energy connects to similar pockets all over the world, but the people who built this room were only interested in one, Sun says the island, Ms. Hawking says yes, that they'd gathered proof that it existed, they knew that it was out there somewhere, but just couldn't find it, then a very clever fellow built the pendulum on the theoretical notion that they should stop looking for where the island was supposed to be, and start looking for where it was going to be, Jack asks what she means about where it was going to be, Ms. Hawking says that this fellow presumed correctly that the island was always moving, she asks why do they think they were never rescued, she says that while the movements of the island seem random, this man and his team created a series of equations which tell them with a high degree of probability where it is going to be at a certain point in time, windows as it were, that while open, provide a route back, but unfortunately these windows don't stay open for very long, she tells them that theirs closes in 36 hours, Desmond asks if they're talking about what he really thinks he's hearing, that they're all going back to the island, and willingly, Sun says yes, asks why Desmond is there, he says he came there to deliver a message, he says that Daniel Faraday, Ms. Hawking's son, sent him here, that he wanted Desmond to tell her that he and all the people on the island, need her help, he didn't say Jack, he didn't say Sun, he didn't say Ben, he said her, Desmond says to consider the message delivered, Ms. Hawking says that she's sorry to have to tell him, but the island isn't done with him yet, Desmond gets angry, says that this woman cost him four years of his life, four years that he'll never get back because she told him that he was supposed to go to that island, that it was his purpose, he tells Jack to listen to him carefully, that these people are playing a game with them, they're using them, and they're just the pieces, Desmond tells Jack that whatever Ms. Hawking tells him to do, to ignore it, Ms. Hawking says that the island isn't done with him, but Desmond says that he's done with the island, he leaves, Ms. Hawking tells Jack that the binder in his hands shows all the routes over the island, where it will be, she says that a commercial airliner that will fly to Guam, will fly right over the island, Ajira Airways, Flight 316, and it must be that plane, they all need to be on it, she also says that if they want to return, they need to recreate as best they can, the circumstances that brought them there in the first place, that means as many people as they can get to bring with them, Jack asks what if they can't, she says all that she can tell them is that the results will be unpredictable, Jack asks if that's it, to just get them on the flight, she says that's not all, at least not for Jack.

  3. Ms. Hawking brings Jack to her office, he asks her what about Ben and Sun, she says they heard what they needed to hear, that this doesn't concern them, she gives him an envelope, which says Jack Shephard on it, he asks what it is, she says that it's John Locke's suicide note, he says he didn't know, she says obituaries don't see fit to mention when people hang themselves, Jack asks why Locke would kill himself, she says there are many reasons, she's sure, but the only one that matters is that he's going to help him get back, that John Locke is going to be a proxy, Jack asks a substitute for who, she says who does he think, that he needs as best he can, to recreate the conditions of the original flight, which is why he has to give John Locke something of his father's, Jack has to get something that belonged to his father, he needs to give it to John, Jack says his father is gone, has been dead for three years, and to give it to Locke, this is ridiculous, Ms. Hawking says to stop thinking how ridiculous it is, and start asking himself whether or not he believes it's going to work, that's why it's called a leap of faith, Jack.
  4. "Oh, stop thinking how ridiculous it is and start asking yourself whether or not you believe it's going to work. That's why it's called a leap of faith, Jack." Eloise Hawking
  5. Jack leaves, goes into church, Ben is kneeling on a pew, Jack asks him where Sun is, Ben says she left, Jack says and Locke, his body, Ben says he has a friend looking after it, that he'll pick it up on his way to the airport, Ben lights a candle, asks what Ms. Hawking said to him, Jack asks who she is, why is she helping them, how she knows all of this, Ben says Thomas the Apostle, when Jesus wanted to return to Judea, knowing that he would probably be murdered there, Thomas said to the others, "Let us also go that we might die with him," but Thomas was not remembered for this bravery, his claim to fame came later, when he refused to acknowledge the resurrection, he just couldn't wrap is mind around it, the story goes that he needed to touch Jesus' wounds to be convinced, Jack asks so was he, Ben says of course he was, that we're all convinced sooner or later, Ben leaves the church, Jack asks where he's going, Ben says that he made a promise to an old friend of his, just a lose end that needs tying up, says he'll see Jack at the airport.
    From Lostpedia

From Lostpedia

From Lostpedia

But I thought, who the hell's gonna see his feet? And so I--I had these old white tennis shoes, and I just said, "Use these. Put these on him." 'Cause he wasn't worth a nice pair of shoes to me. 316, Initial Reaction

All I have to say is Desmond and Penny better not be dead. As much as I love Ben, we'll be finished if he murdered one or both of them, and especially little Charlie. That being said, I loved this episode, the opening, and it's probably my favorite after Jughead.

Questions:
  • Why did Jack land on the island the same way but no one else?
  • Why did Hurley have a guitar case?
  • Who or what convinced Sayid, Hurley and Kate to get on the plane?
  • What happened to Aaron? Who did Kate give him to?
  • Where did Ben go? Is his promise to an old friend his promise to Widmore?
  • Why was Ben all bloodied up? Did he go after Desmond and Penny?
  • Are Desmond and/or Penny dead? What about Charlie?
  • Will Desmond get back to the island?
  • Who created The Lamp Post and the pendulum?
  • How and why does Ms. Eloise Hawking know so much?
  • How is the island constantly moving?
  • Where are the other places around the world that are connected to the island?
  • Did John Locke really commit suicide?
  • Why does Jack need to give Locke something that was his father's?
  • What is the significance of Jack's grandad, Ray?
  • Is Ray trying to get back to the island?
  • Why is Sayid handcuffed and being escorted onto the plane?
  • Who is the woman that is escorting him?
  • What is the significance of the man that talked to Jack and was on the plane?
  • Where's Walt? Where's Desmond?
  • Who and where are the other passengers on the plane?
  • Where did the plane go? Did it really crash?
  • Why is there a flash when they land on the island?
  • Where are Sun, Ben, and Sayid?
  • Why is Jin working for DHARMA? Are they all working for them?
Notes:
  • I was surprised to see this opening scene so soon. It has been my speculation for a long time (since about Season 2) that we would see the opening scene of The Pilot again. I flipped out a little bit when I saw this, talking to myself out loud, of course.
  • The photograph of the island in The Lamp Post is from the US Army, labeled Top Secret, and was dated September 23, 1954, which is almost exactly 50 years prior to the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.
  • Hurley was reading another comic book in the Airport, called El último Hombre by LOST writer Brian K. Vaughn.
  • There was a Virgin Mary statue in Ms. Hawking's office.
  • When the Ajira plane takes off, there is an Oceanic plane in the background.
  • Locke's suicide note to Jack said "Jack, I wish you had believed me. JL"
  • I think that Jack is a believer now.
  • Where's Vincent? He needs to wake Jack up!
  • Ms. Hawking said that the island has an energy that is connected to other places around the world. One of the places could possibly be the place in Australia that Rose and Bernard visited a man with healing powers, Isaac of Uluru.
  • I really liked the scene where Jack is putting his father's shoes on Locke, saying that wherever he is now, that he's probably laughing his ass off.
  • I think that Jack's grandfather, Ray, may be seen again. Perhaps he's been on the island.
  • Ms. Hawking told Jack that it's a leap of faith, just as Locke did.
  • I really hope that Desmond beat the crap out of Ben, or somehow, Sayid showed up and beat the face off him. I'm going to be really upset if Desmond or Penny are dead, and killing their son, Charlie, would just be horrible. I am really going to hate that if it's true. I strongly believe that it will ruin Desmond's entire story. Can we please just have one happy ending?
  • I'm glad that Desmond had a little explosion on Ms. Hawking. Watch out for that big ass pendulum, though, Desmond.
  • It was cool to find out why Christian Shephard was wearing tennis shoes in his coffin.
  • Alright, Kate, it's kind of time to stop having sex with dudes just because you're upset about something. Not that I mind, it's just getting a little old, and in my opinion, really makes her character very one-dimensional.
  • Jack, you don't hear a noise, and then go looking for it in the dark.
  • Also, what happened to Aaron better not be stupid.
  • I thought Matthew Fox's performance was very strong in this episode. Especially in the scene where he tells Kate about the shoes, and where he puts the shoes on Locke's body.
  • When Ben calls Jack, he's at a phone booth by the marina.
  • Ben was reading Ulysses on the plane.
  • Really, Ben? Your mom taught you how to read? Your ghost mom? Even when telling a joke, Ben just can't help himself from lying about something.
  • Sayid seemed to no longer have a beard on the plane, and didn't have any speaking lines.
  • Frank Lapidus was flying the plane! I'm so glad he's back.

Questions:
  1. Do Charlotte and Daniel really not know anything? Are they just a Science Team?
  2. What was Claire seeing when she wasn't feeling well?
  3. Hey, Juliet, I thought you weren't a surgeon? So you can't remove a bullet, but you can perform an Appendectomy? What's next, Heart Surgery?
  4. Did Jack get sick for a reason? Was he not supposed to leave the Island?
  5. Why do some people get cured on the Island and some get sick?
  6. How and why is Christian Shephard appearing to Jack off Island?
  7. What did Charlie mean by telling Jack that he's not supposed to raise him?
  8. Is Jack not supposed to raise Aaron or someone else?
  9. What powers the DHARMA stations?
  10. Why does Christian appear to Claire? Why does she go with him?
Favorites:
  1. "Just watch your tone, Red." Rose
  2. "I don't say nice things about my dad? Well, he was a good storyteller. I'll give him that." Jack
  3. "Don't look at her. Don't talk to her. Don't mess with her. You got a restraining order. 20 feet." Sawyer "What are you, her big brother?" Miles
  4. "Do you think she knows he likes her?" Jin "She's a woman. She knows." Sun
  5. "Where do you suppose all this power's coming from?" Dan "Add that one to the list, Dan." Charlotte
  6. "If you continue to lie... I'm going to hurt your friend Daniel. I'm going to break his fingers one at a time. Do you understand that?" Jin
  7. "Wouldn't you rather be dreaming about something nice back home?" Bernard
  8. "I would like to be able to tell you you' not gonna feel a thing, but... you will." Juliet
  9. "You know, getting engaged is supposed to help reduce stress, not create it." Erika
  10. "Dad?" Claire
  11. "He should be fine. We just have to talk him into resting." Juliet "Good luck with that." Kate
  12. "I'd have followed them, but I have a restraining order." Miles
Notes:
  1. Jack steps on a Millennium Falcon, which is yet another Star Wars reference.
  2. The toy can also be a reference to Sawyer, who had made several Star Wars references himself throughout the series. Jack also exclaims "Son of a bitch!" which is a Sawyer line.
  3. When Jack is seen shirtless in the flashforward, he has a scar where his appendix would be. Obviously this is shown for continuity, but there was a big deal made over the fact that Matthew Fox had shaved his chest and stomach for this episode, when he was clearly hairy previously. Kate also says that she bought Jack a razor in the same scene. Obviously the chest-shaving was done to show the scar from his surgery in this episode, which was revealed in the flashforward before we knew that it happened on the island.
  4. I always wonder what exactly Jack is responding to when he scoffs at the newspaper and exclaims "A-Rod."
  5. The Yankees/Red Sox series, to my memory, occurred in August of 2006.
  6. This is not my favorite episode ever. In fact, I think it's one of the weakest of Season 4. Maybe it's just that I don't enjoy Jack or Kate flashes so much anymore. I'd rather learn about characters that I don't know that much about yet. However, I love the scene with Hurley. Jorge Garcia's serious acting is so underrated.
  7. When Jack is supposed to work on someone with an L4 vertebrae problem, obviously he was familiar with it already, because he operated on Ben who had a tumor on his L4.
  8. Jack gets a prescription for Clonazepam. Hurley asked Sawyer for Clonazepam in Dave. He said he needed it so that he wouldn't see things. Now Jack is the one seeing things and taking pills.
  9. Jack is looking pretty freakin' crazy right here. This is one of Jack's craziest Crazy-Jack moments.
  10. The title comes from something Bernard says to Jack during the surgery, "dream of something nice back home."
  11. In Raised by Another, Richard Malkin told Claire that she was the only one who could raise the baby, but she wanted to give it up for adoption, when she decides not to, he then changed his story and told her that there was a couple in Los Angeles that would adopt the baby. He said "They're not strangers. They're good people." Now, there is a couple in Los Angeles raising Aaron. Was Richard Malkin somehow talking about Jack and Kate?
  12. You didn't save Kate, Jack. What the hell is wrong with you? Sawyer saved her more than you did.
  13. Why in the hell did Keamy bury Danielle and Karl's bodies face up, showing through the dirt? Not only is he a ruthless kill, but he's lazy too.
  14. Uh, usually the Smoke Monster beats the crap out of people and kills them. Those guys had a few scratches.
  15. Hurley states that someone will be visiting Jack as well, this is reminiscent to ghosts visiting Scrooge in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
  16. This episode was the second time Kate's identity was revealed in a shower scene. Not complaining.
  17. Sawyer's evolution to leader begins, and Jack's drug addiction begins.
  18. I dare you to name a Jack flashback/forward where Jack hasn't cried. Go ahead, find one.
