Episode Analysis of 1.10 "Raised By Another"

WARNING: If you have not already seen all of LOST, please DO NOT READ THIS.

My LOST re-watch and in-depth episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that was LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. Seriously. Stop it. Now. Go watch it. Then, come back here.

First off, let's clear the air first. I'm back after taking two months or so off from blogging altogether. While it was much longer than I had originally anticipated, I didn't realize how much time I needed until I actually got back here. Sometimes, I need a break from these things to clear my head and reset. It's good to be back now.

What happened while I was gone? Well, apparently all the actors from LOST have literally lost their damn minds after leaving the Island. First, Doug Hutchison, who played Horace Goodspeed, and is fifty-one years old, married a sixteen year old aspiring country singer. Then, Matthew Fox got arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman on a damn party bus or something. Sounds like he's pulling a Jack Shephard to me. I wonder if he was wearing a fake beard when he did it..

And, in much less disturbing news, Evangeline Lilly had a baby without anyone even noticing she was pregnant. Apparently she's dating Norman Kali, who was a Production Assistant on LOST. I recognized this dude right away because he's in a bunch of the LOST DVD Extras.. Their baby's first words? "We have to go back, Kate." Yes, babies speak immediately when they are born. Evangeline was also cast in the new film, The Hobbit, and was seen in New Zealand with her baby boy. So, that's pretty exciting. Especially for LOTR nerds like myself.. Also, congrats to Evangeline and Norman. And, that's probably the first and last time I will ever write about "gossip" or whatever the fuck that was that I just did..

So, now that we're done with that quick recap and LOST news, let's get back to business as usual, shall we?

To read my original post on this episode, please refer to Raised By Another.

As she wakes, her eyes shift, looking around to catch her bearings. It's dark, and a baby continues to cry. Claire suddenly springs up from her sleep, short of breath, and looking around the caves. She feels her stomach to realize that she is no longer pregnant.

Initial Reaction to "What They Died For"

The Penultimate. It was everything I'd hoped it would be. Everything is finally starting to make sense now. This episode really set up the finale. It was even funny, which is something that I was not expecting at all, but also enjoyed a lot. I think that I'm finally starting to see the big picture and have idea of just how all of this is going to come together. Don't get me wrong, I still have no clue how it's going to end, but the options are becoming clearer more now than they ever have before. This episode also made a lot of things from last week's "Across the Sea" make a lot more sense to me. So, listen, haters. You were wrong. Admit it. Thank you. Now, we can be friends. So, let's talk about "What They Died For" because I can't wait to discuss it. This is going to be a long post.

I don't remember what I wrote, but whatever it was... he would've hated it. [Chuckles] [laughter] My father couldn't stand eulogies. "The only good thing about a wake is the free booze", he'd say. I was still in the hospital. I never saw him. He came to see his daughter. My daughter, Mr. Shephard." Carole "My father didn't have a daughter--" Jack "Yes. He did. If you don't believe me, check his phone records. Would you like to know the--the strangest thing about all this, Mr. Shephard? My daughter was on your plane, too. She was on flight 8-1-5. (Crying) You were in the air for six hours, probably just a few rows from her and you never even knew she was your sister. (Sighs deeply) she was one of the ones who died when your plane hit the water. (Sighs) Her name was... Claire. (Sniffs) I didn't mean to burden you with this, but... you needed to know. I'm... sorry for your loss." Carole
  34. Sun asks Michael how he got back to New York, Michael says that Walt and him took the boat, followed the bearing, after a couple of days, they came to an Island, he sold the boat, hopped a cargo ferry back to the states, didn't tell anyone who they were, Sun asks if he works for Ben, but Michael says that he doesn't' work for Ben, that he's trying to help them, trying to make up for what he did.

  38. "Listen to me very carefully, John, because I'm not gonna have time to repeat this. You're gonna go into that greenhouse through that hole there. Once inside, you're gonna turn left. Go about 20 paces until you see a patch of Anthuriums on your left. They're in an alcove against the north wall. Face the wall, reach down with your left hand. 20. "Hugo's with Ben." Sawyer "(Sighs) Son of a bitch." Jack
  21. "How many times do I have to tell you, John? I always have a plan." Ben
Notes:
  1. The reunion is such an iconic scene that we've all been waiting for since Season 1, and the antithesis of the beginning of the Series, just one that we probably all thought would happen at the very end, not in Season 4.
  2. I totally knew who Jack's mom, Margo Shephard, was. She was in White Rabbit.
  3. Kate looks around when they get off the plane because she's wondering if someone is there to arrested her.
  4. Karen Decker was Admiral Cain from Battlestar Galactica. Nice!
  5. The plane lands in Hawaii, where they actually film the show.
  6. Jack can never have Locke be right about anything, can he?
  7. Uh, Kate, I don't know if you've noticed, but Jack and Sawyer are always fighting eachother. Mostly over you. You're part of the problem.
  8. There is so much information in the Oceanic press conference scene.
  9. Membata is Indonesian for ambivalent.
  10. I find it hard to believe that anyone buys that Kate was six months pregnant before she got on the plane.
  11. When Sun translate the Korean-speaking reporters question, her parents give her a weird look, this is because they do no know that she can speak English. However, she can kind of just pass that off as living on an island for over 100 days with people who are constantly speaking English.
  12. The whole story of the Oceanic 6 makes no sense.
  13. Naveen Andrews' acting in the scene where he sees Nadia is just outstanding. He blinks his eyes as if he wants to see if he's dreaming or not, and he's too much in shock to even kiss her. That's real. It's not a love-story happy-ending reunion that most television shows and movies have. If that really happened, anyone would be too much in shock to even do anything.
  14. You can't fool me, I knew exactly who Noor Abed Jaseem was.
  15. Sawyer refers to the barracks as New Otherton, which is Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse's nickname for the barracks.
  16. From Lostpedia: Hurley's birthday party scene contained the following "Easter eggs": 4 palm trees on the lanai, 8 helium balloons tied by the pool, 15 presents on the lanai table, 16 party hats worn by background individuals, 23 & 42 were the Numbers on the jerseys worn on the 2 boys crossing over the pool right after the DJ was shown.
  17. When Hurley's dad, David Reyes, mentions hunting boar on the island, Sayid and Nadia look at eachother as if he knows something in which he shouldn't. This indicates that Hurley has told his dad about the Island, but also that Sayid has told Nadia about the Island, which could mean that he told her everything, and may be why she ultimately died.

  18. Jack knocking things over when he's all drugged up.
  19. "Attention, Others. Come in, Others. If you're listening in, I want you to know that we got you bastards. And, unless the rest of you wanna be blown up, you best stay away from our beach..." Hurley
  20. The scene with Penny and Charlie's death.
  21. The flash forward, of course.
Notes:
  1. There is a theory that the people who Jack saved in the car crash were Rachel and Julian, Juliet's sister and nephew. I think that would be awesome.
  2. Rose has the best lines in this finale.
  3. Ben's notes in his journal, written by Michael Emerson.
    From Lostpedia
  4. Apparently Isabel, "The Sheriff," died in this episode.
  5. I hate Ryan. "I got your man?" Shut up!
  6. Bernard, you could've at least not told them the complete truth. Sayid told you to shut up!
  7. Jack, you love Kate, really? That was just about the worst "I love you" I've ever heard.
  8. Again, Jack, out of nowhere there's a secret cash of guns that Juliet knows about, why don't you question this? Couldn't you have used those guns when Jin was using a pistol to shoot dynamite, when the Others were coming to kill all of you?
  9. Poor Hurley, but so glad you had a badass moment, dude.
  10. HOFFS/DRAWLAR is an anagram for FLASH FORWARD.
  11. Reminder, don't mess with Sayid even if he is tied up and on his knees.
  12. Tom, Mr. Friendly/Zeke dies, a monumental character from Season 1, the first Other we ever saw, "Only the thing is, we're gonna have to take the boy," In Exodus, Part 2.
  13. For the record, I started to figure out this was a flash forward during the opening scene. Don't ask me why or how, but that was my first thought when I saw Jack.
  14. Also, when I saw that this was a Jack-centric episode, I seriously considered not watching anymore. I was so frustrated with Jack at that point, I figured either it had to be the best Jack episode ever, or that was it for me. I seriously didn't want to see another episode about how Jack went to Phuket to get Chinese tattoos from Bei Ling. Yeah, I really didn't want to watch another Stranger In A Strange Land, but, turns out it was the best Jack episode, and almost made me cry with happiness when I thought Jack would jump off a bridge or overdose from drugs and alcohol.
  15. While Charlie dying was sad, I thought it was done extremely well, and is probably the best death on television, ever. He died a hero, and I'll admit, it makes me cry every damn time.
  16. I have so much respect for the writers of LOST for producing such a game-changer in the show. I admire them so much for the guts they have to do almost anything and pull it off.
  17. Kate is fine as hell in the future.
