5.02 The Lie

Three years earlier--Fridge, beers, man walking, boat, Frank Lapidus, on the Searcher, the Oceanic 6, plus Lapidus, Desmond and Penny are there, Hurley says they'll find out, Jack says not if they stick to the story, Sayid says it could be a risk, Jack says that it's the only way, they have to do this, they're running out of time, they have to make a decision, Sayid says it's a decision that will affect the rest of their lives, he's not taking it lightly, Jack needs to know if they're with him, Kate says yes, Sun nods, Frank, Jack says sorry he got dragged into it, Frank says whatever they decide, he'll roll with, Hurley says he doesn't think they should lie, Jack says they need to protect the people that they left behind, protect them from Charles Widmore, hired a boatload of people to kill them, faked the plane crash, he won't just leave them alone, Hurley asks Penny to call him off, she says she can't, Hurley says the island disappeared, that he'll never find it, Jack says that no one will believe him, they'll think he's crazy, Hurley says not if someone backs him up, they'll think he's nuts if he tells the truth, but if they stick together, they can make them believe them, doesn't want to spend the rest of his life lying, Sayid says he doesn't want to spend the rest of his life lying either, but he doesn't think they have another choice, Sayid says sorry to Hurley, but he thinks they have to lie, Hurley says he will remember it, someday Sayid will need his help and he won't be getting it.
"You know what, dude? I'm gonna remember this. And someday, you're gonna need my help, and I'm telling you right now... you're not gettin' it." Hurley
Sayid and Hurley in car, Sayid is unconscious, Hurley is swerving on the road, puts seatbelt on Sayid and crashes, a Police car pulls him over, Hurley asks Sayid what he's supposed to do, the Police Officer is Ana Lucia, asks him what the hell he was thinking, driving like a maniac, asks him why he pulled over, he didn't think, what if she was real, what if a real cop stopped him, they already have pictures of him with a gun and blood on him, she says he has a lot of work to do, needs new clothes, go to safe place, take Sayid to someone he trusts, stay away from cops, do no get arrested, Hurley thanks Ana Lucia, she says Libby says hello, Hurley looks in his mirror and the Police car and Ana Lucia are gone. On island, Rose and Bernard trying to make fire, Frogurt says who cares, any minute the sky can light up, Rose says either help or be quiet, zodiac still on the beach, Juliet says that whatever was with them for the move is along for the ride, Daniel Faraday is back, Sawyer asks where he's been, what his plan is, Juliet says take the zodiac out, find a shipping lane, Daniel says that in order for them to leave, he needs to calculate a new bearing, needs to determine where they are now, in time, Miles says he's going to find them something to eat, Juliet says they'll get water.
Hurley trying to wake Sayid up, takes money out if his wallet, goes in gas station, gets a I heart my Shih-Tzu shirt, girl at counter recognizes him, says she knows him from somewhere, she says he's the guy who won the lottery and crashed in that plane, leaves.
Kate pulls into same gas station as Hurley is leaving, looks at map, Aaron says he wants to go home, Kate contemplates calling Jack, someone else calls her, unrecognized number, she says she can't believe it's them, they're in Los Angeles, can meet them, be there in half an hour, Aaron asks where they're going, Kate says to see a friend.
Ben in hotel, gets box out of the ventilation system, puts it in a bag, Jack comes out of bathroom, looking for something, Ben says if he's looking for his pills, he flushed them down the toilet, Jack says thank you, he was going to do that himself, Ben figured he was, says he's checking out, tells Jack to go home, find himself a suitcase, if there's anything in this life he wants, pack it because he's never coming back, Jack says good, Ben says he'll pick him up in six hours, John's casket is outside in a carpet van, needs to move him somewhere safe, Jack asks if he's dead, Ben says he'll see him in six hours.
David Reyes fixing himself lunch, goes into room, puts on TV, previously on Exposé, eats, hears someone knocking on the door, turns TV off, someone at backdoor, Hurley with Sayid over his shoulders.

Hurley asks if he's seen the news, if mom is there, David says she's out shopping, that Sayid is barely breathing, Hurley says he was shot by a dart, at the safehouse, Sayid took him there, two guys, shot with darts, they're in danger, not sure exactly who from, doorbell rings, it's the LAPD, Hurley says don't tell him he's there, dad says alright, talks to Police, they leave, killed three people, Hurley says no, Sayid did, dad says call a lawyer, Hurley says they're after him, they can't go public, people are trying to kill them, if they go to a Hospital, they'll find them, dad says they need a doctor, Hurley says he knows what to do.
Kate and Aaron in a hotel, Aaron pushes the 31 button in the elevator, they go to a room, Sun answers the door.
Ben goes to a butcher, takes number 342, says he has something very important in the van, Jill, needs her to watch it, Gabriel and Jeffrey checked in, Ben tells her Jack is with them, that he's been through a lot, they all have, tells her to keep him safe, if she doesn't, everything they're about to do won't matter at all. On the beach, night, Bernard finally gets fire, but it goes out immediately, Neil Frogurt complains, Rose says to take a timeout, they'll try again.
Charlotte tells Dan that she can't shake her headache, Dan says he's sure it will pass, Charlotte says the weirdest thing happened earlier, she couldn't remember her mother's maiden name, Daniel says they've all been under a lot of stress, Charlotte asks if he knows what's happened to her.
Miles shows up with a boar, says he found it, it died in the jungle, only been dead three hours.
Frogurt says they don't even have a knife, don't have anything, Bernie can't even start a fire, he's not going to ease up, he's tired and hungry, they're screwed, they can't even get fire, gets hit with a flaming arrow. From Lostpedia
Tons of flaming arrows come their way from inside the jungle, behind the tree line, they all start to run, people get hit with arrows, Sawyer says to meet at the creek, Juliet trying to save people, but Sawyer says they're dead, there's nothing they can do for them. From Lostpedia
The cops are on a stakeout outside Hurley's house, dad says he was in a mental institution, they think that he's crazy enough to come back home, asks Hurley if he is crazy, either that or he's lying to him, Hurley says he's not crazy and has a really good reason why he's lying to him, Hurley's mom comes home, asks why there's a dead Pakistani on her couch, says he's not breathing, Hurley says he is breathing, they have to go. Mom asks why he's all over the news, Hurley says that everything is going to make sense. Hurley's dad sneaks out of the house with Sayid's body in the back of his car.
Kate and Sun, Sun says she's in Los Angeles just a few days, shows her picture of Ji Yeon, says she's with her grandmother in Seoul, hopes someday she can meet her, would be nice to see her and Aaron play together, Sun asks if Kate is alright, Kate says she's fine, Aaron is sleeping, says someone knows they're lying, some lawyers came to see her, two men came to her house and asked for a blood sample, some kind of lawsuit, wanted to test to see if Aaron was her son, wouldn't tell her who their client was, Sun says then they're not interested in exposing the lie, they wouldn't come to her in private, they just want Aaron, she needs to take care of them, asks wouldn't she do anything she had to in order to keep Aaron, Kate asks what kind of person she thinks she is, Sun says the kind of person that makes hard decisions when she has to, like she did on the freighter, says that Kate told her to get on the helicopter, said she'd get Jin, but did what she had to do, if she hadn't, they probably all wouldn't died, instead of just her husband, Kate says she's sorry, cries, Sun says she doesn't blame her, asks how Jack is.
David Reyes goes to Jack with Sayid, shows him body in back of trunk, said he got hit with some darts, must've been drugs, Hurley at house, Jack says get him to hospital, David says that Hurley says whoever did this will be after them, he tells Jack, when this over, stay away from Hurley, whatever he talked him into, doesn't have best interests at heart, stay away from his son, Jack leaves.
Jack goes to the Hospital, St. Sebastian's, calls Ben, says never guess who just showed up at his door, Sayid.
Hurley talks to his mom, Carmen, she asks who Sayid is, thought he was his friend, Hurley says he is, but he has a double life, but he's a good guy, Carmen says he's in terrible trouble, that the news thinks he did it, if news does, everyone does, how could anyone want to hurt him, Hurley says he doesn't know, she says tell his mother the truth, Hurley says they lied, all of them, Oceanic 6 lied about what happened after the crash, they did crash, but it was on a crazy island and they waited for rescue but there was no rescue, smoke monster, other people on the island, hatches, button they had to push every 108 minutes, never clear why, others had nothing to do with him, DHARMA Initiative, teamed up with others, someone was coming on the freighter, they stole helicopter, then the freighter blew up, six of them were left, that part was true, but the rest of the people who were on the plane, they're still on that island, Carmen says she believes him, doesn't understand him, but she believes him, Hurley says a lot of people died, and now this bad stuff is happened because they shouldn't have lied.
"Okay. See, we did crash, but it was on this crazy island. And we waited for rescue, and there wasn't any rescue. And there was a smoke monster, and then there were other people on the island. We called them the Others, and they started attacking us. And we found some hatches, and there was a button you had to push every 108 minutes or...well, I was never really clear on that. But, the Others didn't have anything to do with the hatches. That was the DHARMA Initiative. The Others killed them, and now they're trying to kill us. And then we teamed up with the Others because some worse people were coming on a freighter. Desmond's girlfriend's father sent them to kill us. So we stole their helicopter and we flew it to their freighter, but it blew up. And we couldn't go back to the island because it disappeared, so then we crashed into the ocean, and we floated there for a while until a boat came and picked us up. And by then, there were six of us. That part was true. [Whispers] But the re...[Hurley's voice breaks. He takes a second to regain composure.] But the rest of the people who were on the plane? They're still on that island." Hurley "[Carmen puts her hand on her son's wrist.] I believe you. I don't understand you, but I believe you." Carmen "A lot of people died, ma. Back on the island, Sawyer and Juliet together, Sawyer steps on something in the jungle, says they should meet up with everyone at the creek, they hear something in the jungle, see people with rifles, DHARMA Initiative jumpsuits, Sawyer asks who they are, if they shot the arrows, three of them, take Sawyer and Juliet hostage, Jones asks what they're doing on their island. Jack taking care of Sayid at the Hospital, Sayid wakes up when Jack is checking his eyes, chokes Jack, recognizes him, stops, asks what happened, Jack says he's in the hospital, Hurley father brought him, Jack says he's been attacked, Sayid asks where Hurley is, if anyone else knows he's there.
Hurley making a Hot Pocket, Ben shows up, he throws Hot Pocket at him, says he knows he's in trouble, he can assure him he's taken care of everything, car waiting outback, Police didn't see him, Hurley says that Sayid warned him, Ben says he's taking him to Jack, that Jack called him, Hurley says he's playing one of his mind games, Ben says they came around when they realized that they all wanted the same thing, to go back to the island, he wants Hurley to go with him, then he can stop hiding, worrying about the stories and the deceptions, won't ever have to lie again, to let him help him, Hurley says never, runs, gives himself up to the Police, says they got him, he's the killer, a murderer, killed four people, killed them all, get him away from there, they cops arrest him, Ben leaves. Sawyer and Juliet in the jungle, Jones says tell him what they're doing, how many of them are there, tell him or he'll cut off her other hand, the first isn't negotiable, Sawyer says he'll tell him whatever he wanted to know, something happened to the island, Jones doesn't listen to him, is going to cut off Juliet's hand, but Locke shows up, kills one of them, Mattingly, with a knife, they turn the tables on Jones and Cunningham.
A hooded woman doing math equations on a chalkboard, pendulum, computer, another hatch, map, event window determined, she goes upstairs, inside church or monastery, Ben is there, lighting candles, asks her if she's had any luck, Ms. Hawking, Ben says he's having some difficulties, she says he only has 70 hours, that's what he's got, Ben says he lost Reyes tonight, what happens if he can't get them all to come back, Ms. Hawking says then God help us all.

4.08 Meet Kevin Johnson

Locke's camp has a meeting, Locke says there will be no more secrets, he brings Miles in, and Miles they're there for Ben, Sawyer wants to turn Ben over to them, but Locke says no, Ben says that once they have him, they'll kill everyone else on the island, that Michael is the man on the boat, everyone is shocked at this news.
On the freighter, Desmond and Sayid are asleep, an alarm goes off, they wake and go to the deck, the Captain says no one leaves the ship without his say so, he's beating two of his crew members for trying to leave and go to the island, he calls Michael to clean up.
Sayid approaches Michael, questions why Michael is on the boat, says he's there to die.
Sawyer approaches Locke after the meeting, who is bringing Miles back to the boathouse, he questions the $3.2 million Miles asked Ben for, but Locke says he doesn't think he'll be able to get it since there isn't a bank on the island, Miles says he'll find a way to get it.
Ben gives Alex a map to The Temple, he says it's a sanctuary, that it may be the last safe place on the island, Karl asks why don't they know about it, Ben says that he doesn't tell everyone about it, that the rest of their people are already there, that they can get there in a day and a half, Karl says they all should go, but Ben says it's only for them, people are there to capture him, that they will use Alex to get to him, Rousseau agrees, Ben says they're more dangerous than him, tells Alex that her mother will protect her, they leave. In the morning, Sayid and Desmond find out that Michael is in the engine room, they go there, Michael is fixing the engine, asks Jeff to go get a pressure valve from the supply room, when he leaves, Sayid attacks Michael, wants to know how he's on the boat, Michael said he wouldn't understand, so Sayid says to start from the beginning. Michael is in his apartment in New York, he's writing a letter, he looks at a photograph of him and Walt, he takes the note and leaves, gets in his car, Mama Cass plays on the radio, he pins the note to his coat, drives away. From Lostpedia
Michael says he's sorry, he drives full-speed into a dumpster, the radio continues to play, there are sirens in the background, coming toward him.
He wakes up in the hospital, a nurse comes in, he asks how he got there, she says he was in a car accident, that it's a miracle he's alive, there is whispering, the nurse is Libby with blankets, Michael wakes up from a dream. From Lostpedia
The real nurse comes in, there is a Christmas tree in the hallway, she says he's lucky to be alive, that he wrecked his car, there was a note was pinned to his chest, she asks him if he wants her to call Walt, that's who the note was written to, he says no.
Michael goes to see Walt at his mother's house, but his mom says no, that Walt doesn't want to talk to him, that she thought he was dead, questions why they have different names, that Walt wakes up in the middle of the night screaming, they said their plane crashed in the middle of the ocean, wants to know why she can't tell anyone about him and Walt, that they were gone 2 months, that until he explains, he gave up his rights, Michael asks her to tell Walt that he loves him.

Michael pawns the watch that Jin gave him for a gun and bullets, goes into an alley to kill himself, he's about to pull the trigger, but Tom Friendly shows up.
Michael attacks him, Tom is going to shoot him, so Michael says do it, but Tom says they sent him there, kept tabs on him, realizes that he told Walt what he did, that he couldn't carry the guilt, says that he can't kill himself, that the island won't let him, that he has more work to do, tells him that when he comes to terms with that, he's staying in the Pent House, at Hotel Earl. Michael goes back to his apartment, he tries to kill himself, but nothing happens, the gun is loaded, but no bullets come out, the gun jams.
Michael has the television on in the background, a Game-Show Host asks a Literature questions referring to the book, Slaughterhouse Five, and the contestant answers Kurt Vonnegut, but then the news interrupts the program, Michael hears that Oceanic Flight 815 was found, the wreckage, they say that there's little chance of retrieving the black box.
Michael goes to the hotel to meet Tom, who is now gay Friendly.
Tom says he doesn't make it to the mainland too often, Michael wants to know why the plane is at the bottom of the Ocean, Tom says it's not his plane, that it's a phony, that Charles Widmore staged the wreckage, doesn't want anyone else to find where the real plane is except him.
Tom asks Michael if the bullet bounced or the gun jammed, Michael says to prove it.
Tom shows Michael a photograph of a cemetery in Thailand where the bodies were dug up, a purchase Order for a 777, bought through a shell company, shipping logs for a freighter to drop the whole mess down a trench too deep enough to guarantee no remains would be identified.
Michael wants to know what he wants, Tom says in a few days, a freighter, porting Fiji, that it's Widmore's, that they have reason to believe he's finally found the coordinates to the island, that he's heading for it, Michael has a job on the boat, shows him a fake ID, says meet Kevin Johnson, that he's joining the crew as a deckhand, going undercover, that if Widmore finds the island, everyone dies, that Michael can redeem himself for what he did, to give his life, but Michael says he can't go back to the island, Tom says that he's not going back, that he's going so he can kill everyone on board the freighter that's heading for it. Michael arrives in Fiji, gets to the freighter, he meets George Minkowski, who says that check in is with Naomi Dorrit, she tells him he had a crate delivered, he then meets Miles, who says his name isn't Kevin, that 80% of the people on the boat are lying about something, offers him an orange. Michael gets a phone call, Tom says to wait a day or two until they're out in the open sea, asks if he's getting cold feet, but Michael says he's in, Tom tells him to ditch the phone, do the job.
Frank and Naomi argue about the chopper.
Frank talks to Michael about Oceanic Flight 815, asks what if he said the plane that was found int the trench wasn't the real 815, Michael asks why he signed up for the trip, Frank says that Widmore believes him, asks to imagine if they found people alive. From Lostpedia
Keamy shooting, Michael says he thought they were on a rescue mission.
Michael opens the crate he received, there's a case inside, with a bomb in it, he brings it in to the Engine room, executes the code, Libby appears, she says don't do it, but he pushes the button anyway, counting down from fifteen seconds, a note comes out that says "NOT YET." From Lostpedia
Michael gets a phone call on the freighter, says it's Walt, but it's not, it's Ben.
Ben says that he will not kill innocent people, Michael asks about Ana Lucia and Libby, Ben says he killed them, that no one told him to do it, he tells Michael to compile a list of names, every person on the boat, give him the list, to disable communications and to take out the engine, that the boat will never get to island, that his friends will be safe, Ben says that Michael is one of the good guys. Michael finishes telling Sayid his story, that he's working for Benjamin Linus but Sayid isn't satisfied and brings him to Captain Gault, tells the Captain his story.
"This man is not who you think he is. He was a passenger on Oceanic Flight 8-1-5. I spent two months with him on the Island before he betrayed us. This is the man who sabotaged your radio room. He destroyed the ship's engine, and his name isn't Kevin Johnson. It's Michael Dawson, and he's a traitor." Sayid
Rousseau, Alex and Karl are going to The Temple, they stop to drink and rest. From Lostpedia
Gun shots fire towards them, Karl's water bottle is shot, and then while starring at it, he gets shot, he dies.
Alex is in shock, Rousseau tells her that they have to go, that she's going to count to three and they're going to run, but as soon as they run, Rousseau gets shot and dies.

"You put me on this boat, talked me into blowing it up, and when I push the damn button, a flag pops up." Michael "You actually activated the bomb?" Ben "It's not a bomb! It's a... (catches himself) It's a joke." Michael
When Karl dies. That was the most hilarious death ever. Karl wonders why his water bottle was shot.

Notes:

So, Mr. Friendly is gay. I guess that's why Kate isn't his type, as he said in A Tale of Two Cities.
Michael's mother notes that he was missing for over two months, which tells us that time on the island and off the island are the same. It had been speculated for a long time that time on the island may lapse differently than the island world, but this is one of the many conformations that it hasn't.
Michael David Kelly claimed in an interview that it in fact was him that appeared in this episode, but obviously was digitally altered.
It made me kind of sad that Michael pawned the watch that Jin gave him. Jin attacked Michael for having the watch in House of the Rising Sun, but they built the raft together and quickly became friends, so Jin gave it to Michael. It was a symbol of how much they grew and their time on the island, and Michael goes and hocks it. Bastard!
I like how Tom has all the funny lines in this episode.
Michael knew Naomi was from Manchester because of Charlie.
When Michael sees Libby on the freighter, she is wearing the same clothing that she died in.
From Lostpedia: "Kevin Johnson" and "Dean Moriarty," from The Economist, share the same passport number: HNSO12153. The passport number: HNSO12153 references Hanso (HNSO) and two of the Numbers 4 and 8 (1+2+1=4 and 5+3=8).
Karl saying "I've got a bad feeling about this" is yet another Star Wars reference.

4.05 The Constant

The helicopter is flying back to the freighter, Desmond looks at his photograph of Penny.
Frank is flying the helicopter, looks at his notes from Daniel, 40 N at bearing 305, 7 Kilometers, Sayid asks what it is, Frank says that it's a cheat-sheet.
A storm forms ahead of them, but they're flying straight into it, Sayid asks why, Frank says it's because they have to stay on the bearing.
Sayid asks Desmond about Penelope, that she told Charlie she didn't know about the boat, asks what he expects to find when he gets to the freighter, Desmond says answers.
They hit some turbulence in the storm, lightning strikes, they go slightly off the bearing, to 310, Frank struggles to take control of the helicopter. From Lostpedia
Frank tells them to hold on, Desmond holds on to his seat, gripping it, and suddenly he is transported to when he was in the Royal Scottish Regiment, in a Military barrack, gripping onto the side of his bed, a Drill Sergeant calling orders, telling them to get up, Desmond appears to be disoriented, confused, but gets out of bed slowly. Desmond rushes to his mark, his Drill Sergeant asks what took him so long, Desmond says he was having a dream, he says he was on a helicopter, in a storm, the Army Officer says to be in the yard in 4 minutes, tells all the Soldiers to be thankful that they have to do it in double-time because of Desmond's tardiness.
In the yard, they do push-ups, sit-ups, in the mud and rain, Desmond's friend tells him that he hopes his dream was worth it, Desmond says he's never had a dream so vivid, that it was like he was actually there, the Drill Sergeant sees Desmond talking, asks him a ques--
Back in the storm, on the helicopter, Desmond is confused, Frank says they're almost through it, they see daylight, Desmond is disoriented, doesn't know where he is, is trying to get out of the helicopter, unbuckle his seat-belt, but Sayid is trying to help him, hold him back, but Desmond doesn't recognize Sayid, asks who he is, how he knows his name. Jack is worried, says they took of a day ago, Charlotte says she doesn't know anything, Juliet says they're not worried, that their boat is 40 miles off-shore, it should have only taken them 20 minutes to get there, Dan says they should just tell him, but Charlotte says not to get them confused, Jack and Juliet insist, Dan says that their perception of how long they've been gone may not be exactly how long they've actually been gone, that it will be okay as long as they stay on the bearing, and if not, there may be side-effects.
Desmond is confused, keeps trying to get out of the helicopter, Sayid is trying to help him, hold him back, tells him to sit down, that they're at 2,000 feet, but Desmond keeps asking what he's doing there, how he knows his name, but Frank tells Sayid to just hold on to him, that they'll be there in 2 minutes, and the helicopter gets to the freighter, The Kahana. They get off the helicopter, the people on the freighter question them, want to know who they are, Frank says they're survivors of Flight 815, Sayid says his friend is disoriented, but Desmond doesn't claim to know Sayid.
Desmond is freaking out, wants to know who they are, where he is, what he's doing there.
They ask how long Desmond has been like that, Frank says he was fine when they took off, Sayid tries to protect Desmond, but they talk to Sayid, say they want to take Desmond to their sickbay, to have their doctor look at him, then Sayid can come down, Desmond says this is a mistake, he's not supposed to be--

Desmond is loading a truck, he tells his friend, Billy, that he left, he was on a boat, then he was back there, right where he started, Billy asks who else was on the boat, if there was anyone he recognized, Desmond says Penny was on the boat, that he had a photograph, and Penny was in the photo.
Desmond goes to a phone booth to call her, an angry soldier comes out and bumps into him purposely, saying thank you for that morning, and Desmond drops his change on the ground, going to pick it up.
Desmond is back on the freighter, trying to pick up his change on the deck, but nothing is there, Desmond says he's not there, doesn't believe this is happening, Keamy and Omar take him to the sickbay.
Desmond asks them who they are, Keamy says he's from Vegas and Omar is from Florida, they last ported Fiji, that at least they know they're in the Pacific, they put Desmond in the sickbay, saying they're going to get the doctor, that he'll ask him questions and try to sort everything out, they lock him in there.
Desmond discovers a man strapped down to the bed in the sickbay, the man asks if it's happening to him too.
Sayid asks Frank what's happening to Desmond, but Frank doesn't know, Sayid asks why they took off at dusk and landed on the freighter in the middle of the day, Frank says he's trying to help him, Sayid asks for a satellite phone to call his friends, Frank wants Sayid's weapon for the phone, he gives it to him.
Sayid calls Jack, tells him something happened during the flight, Desmond is in their sickbay, Jack puts him on speaker phone, Sayid says that Desmond doesn't recognize him or know where he is, Jack asks if that's the side-effects, Dan wants to know if Desmond has been exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism, he says that they don't know why, but going to and coming form the island, some people can get a little confused, Juliet asks if it's amnesia, but Daniel says no.
Desmond tries to talk to the man in the sickbay, but he appears to be staring blankly into space, he suddenly blinks, becomes lucid, says he was just on a Ferris Wheel.
The doctor, Ray, comes in, the man strapped to the bed says it's happening to Desmond too, that he's not crazy, that it's going to happen to all of them once they start heading to the island again, but Ray draws a needle and injects him, which relaxes him immediately.
Desmond says he's not giving him that too, but Ray says he just wants to check Desmond's eyes, so he can help him, he asks his name, the last thing that he remembers. From Lostpedia
Desmond is transported back to the phone booth, picking up his change on the ground, he calls Penny, he tells her he's in trouble, that he thinks something's happened to him, he's confused, that he needs to see her, she says he broke up with her and joined the Army, and now he expects that she still cares about him, that he is confused, Desmond says he has 2 days leave starting tonight, asks if he can come see her, but she says no, that she moved from the flat, so don't bother showing up there, that it doesn't matter where, not to call her again, he tells her "Penny, I need--
--need you." Desmond is back in the sickbay, the Doctor, Ray, checking his eyes, asks him if he just experienced something.

Sayid and Frank come in, Ray says they're not supposed to be there, but Frank says he has Faraday calling from the island, that he needs to talk to Desmond, but Ray says he's not talking to his patient, Sayid says he's not his patient, slams him against the wall, tells him to give Desmond the phone, Ray sounds an alarm, Sayid closes the door.
Daniel talks to Desmond, says they met yesterday before they took off, but he's guessing he doesn't remember that, Desmond doesn't remember taking off or the island, Daniel asks Desmond what year he thinks it is, Desmond if confused but this questions, he says it's 1996, Daniel asks where he's supposed to be in 1996, Desmond says Camp Millar, Royal Scots Regiment, just North of Glasgow, Daniel tells him that when it happens again, to get on a train and go to Oxford University, Queens College, Psychics Department, Desmond questions why, Daniel says he needs Desmond to find him.
Daniel looks for his notebook, says he needs to find it or he won't believe him, Jack wants to know why Desmond thinks it's 1996, Daniel tells him that he doesn't know, that it's a random effect, it's unpredictable, that sometimes it's for a couple of hours, other times it's years, Jack asks if it's happened before. Daniel gets back on the phone with Desmond, Sayid is holding the door closed in the sickbay, Daniel tells Desmond that he needs to find him, when he does, tell him to set the device to 2.342, and make sure it's oscillating at 11 Hertz, and if the numbers don't convince him, to tell him that he knows about Eloise.
Desmond writes the note on his hand, Keamy and Omar bust into the sickbay.
Desmond is transported back to the phone booth, checks his hand, but the note is no longer there.
Desmond goes to Oxford, he finds Daniel, tells him he thinks he's just been to the future, that he spoke to him there, Daniel told him to find him at Oxford, he said he'd help him, but Daniel asks why he would put him through the headache of time travel, that it seems unnecessary, thinks that it's a prank, says it's a paradox.

Daniel takes Desmond to his lab, says it's where he does the things that Oxford frowns upon, asks that the future version of him referenced their meeting, so he would remember Desmond coming to Oxford, but Desmond says no, that maybe he just forgot.

Daniel puts on a radiation vest, Desmond asks what it's for, if he gets one, but Daniel tells Desmond he only needs it for prolonged exposure, that he does it 20 times a day, but Desmond asks why he then doesn't protect his head, Daniel flicks some switches.
Daniel shows Desmond Eloise, a rat, says that if the numbers Desmond gave him are correct, the machine will unstick Eloise in time, just like him.
Daniel places Eloise at the beginning of a maze, puts his machine on her, presses a button and a red ray of light consumes her, Desmond asks what happened, but Daniel says she's not back yet, when Eloise comes to, Daniel releases Eloise into the maze and she goes through it without a mistake, Daniel says it's perfect, that it worked, it's incredible, but Desmond questions what's so wonderful about it, Daniel says that he just finished the maze that morning, that he's not going to teach her how to run it until an hour from then, Desmond says that she traveled to the future, but Daniel says that it's only her consciousness, her mind that traveled to the future. The man who is strapped to the bed speaks to them, he recognizes Desmond's name, he says his name is George Minkowski, that he's the boat's Communications Officer, that before they strapped him down there, all the calls to and from the boat came through him, in the radio room, and every so often, he'd get a flashing light on his console, an incoming call, that they were under strict orders never to answer, he says that those calls came from Desmond's girlfriend, Penelope Widmore. Desmond discovers that Eloise is dead, Daniel says it was probably a brain aneurysm, that he'll do an autopsy later, Desmond asks if that's going to happen to him, Daniel says the effects vary from case to case, but Desmond throws him against a wall, wants to know if he's going to die, Daniel says he thinks Eloise's brain short-circuited, the jumps between the present and the future, she couldn't tell which was which, she had no anchor, the equation needs stability, a constant, to stop it, he needs to find something there that also existed in 1996, something that's important to him, Desmond asks if he could be a person, Daniel says yes, but that he has to make some sort of contact. Desmond is back in the sickbay, falling down, he sees himself in the mirror, noticing that he has a beard and looks very different from 1996, a lot older.
Desmond says he needs to call Penny, but Sayid says that it isn't their priority now.
"I need to call Penny." Desmond "Calling your girlfriend is not our priority." Sayid "Listen, brotha, I don't know you. But you seem to know me, so...so if you and me are friends, then I need your help. I need to call Penny, now." Sayid
Minkowski says that 2 days ago, someone sabotaged all the equipment, they lost all communication with the mainland, that he probably could have fixed it, but then he went nuts, Sayid asks where the radio room is, Minkowski says it's one deck up, that he will help them, they wonder how they will get out, but Minkowski says through the door, which is now suddenly opened, Minkowski says they must have a friend on the boat, but his nose then begins to bleed.
Desmond is transported back to the stairwell, he wakes up and leaves to find Penny.
He goes to an auction, where they are selling the Black Rock journal, owned by Tovard Hanso, Charles Widmore is there, bidding on the item, which he wins, and then leaves.
"The Black Rock set sail from Portsmith, England, on March 22, 1845 on a trading mission to the kingdom of Siam, when she was tragically lost at sea. Desmond approaches Widmore, says he needs to have a word him, Widmore tells him to walk with him, they go into a bathroom, Desmond says he needs to get in touch with Penny, that he doesn't know how to reach her, her number has been disconnected, Widmore says that there was a time, if he'd asked her to marry him, he's certain she would have said yes, but that his cowardice won out instead, that he's had second thoughts, he he wants her to give him another chance, Desmond asks why he hates him so much, but Widmore says it's not him who hates him, gives him Penny's address, says she'll tell him herself.
Widmore leaves the faucet in the bathroom on, and Desmond goes to turn it off, but then flashes back to the freighter.
Minkowski tells Desmond that he knows it's getting harder, that it starts happening faster too, they start to head to the radio room.
Desmond asks Minkowski how this happened to him, he says the freighter was anchored there, they were waiting for orders, bored out of their minds, that him and one of the other crew members, Brandon, took out the ship's tender, wanted to see the island, but Brandon started acting crazy, they had to turn around, tells them that he's dead now, in a body bag.
They get to the communications room, Sayid asks Minkowski who destroyed the equipment, he says he doesn't know, but then he collapses, Desmond catches him, Sayid says that after he makes the call, he wants to know what exactly is going on, he asks Desmond if he has the number, Minkowski starts having a seizure, Desmond tries to get him to wake up, but he doesn't.
While Sayid tries to fix the equipment, he tells Desmond that he needs to remember the number, Desmond notices a calendar in the communications room, he realizes that it's December 2004, they notice that it's also Christmas Eve. From Lostpedia
Desmond starts to get a bloody nose, Minkowski begins to have another seizure, he goes into convulsions, says that he can't get back, and then he dies, Sayid asks what happened to Minkowksi, and Desmond says it's the same thing that's going to happen to him.

Desmond is transported back into the bathroom, laying on the floor, water filling the sink, dripping on him, he turns the faucet off, goes to wipe his nose, but no blood is there, he leaves to go find Penny, 423 Cheyne Walk, knocks on the door.
Penny answers the door, Desmond says he needs to talk to her, but she says she's trying to make a clean break from him, but he begs her to let him talk to her, so she lets him in.
"Desmond? What are you doing here?" Penny "I had to...I mean, I tried to call you but you disconnected your phone." Desmond "Yeah, because I moved. Look, I don't know if you're getting the signals, Desmond, but I'm trying to make a clean break from you, so if you don't mind..." Penny "Wait a minute, Pen, please wait. I just need to get your new phone number, okay?" Desmond "Why would I give you that?" Penny "Because I made a huge mistake, I never should have broken up with you, and...and I know that now, and I'm sorry, and--" Desmond "Don't, just don't dare..." Penny "--and I understand. And I know it's...it's too late to change things, but I need to tell you something, and I need you to listen to me, and I know it's going to sound ridiculous, but...please, Pen. I need you to listen to me." Desmond
Desmond tells Penny that he needs her number, she questions why, but he says that if there's any part of her that still believes in him, to give him her number, that he won't call for 8 years, on December 24, 2004, she gives him her number, 79460893, he says that she can't change her number, to believe him, trust him, Penny makes him leave. Notes:

If this isn't my favorite episode of all time, it's definitely in my top 3. But it still may very well be my favorite when the series comes to an end.
Every time I watch this episode, I feel like I am Desmond.
The editing in this episode is phenomonal. When the scences cut from Desmond in the helicopter and on the freighter, to 1996, you almost feel as if you're living it yourself. When he falls down walking down the stairs, and then he's immediately falling down on the boat, and then when he's talking to Penny on the freighter and looking back, recognizing the situation when he's at her house in 1996, with a smirk on his face beacuse he knows he finally talks to her again in 8 years. The transitions are smooth, with wonderful acting by Henry Ian Cusick, just pure perfection.
The Desmond and Penny story is by far the best relationship only the show. It's the only one that I actually like. I believe that Desmond, Penny, and his story, is probably one of the most essential to the story as a whole. Their relationship is the most real, heartbreaking, and most romanticly non-shipper story. Their love is timeless. They're probably two of the most important characters on the show, and I'm not ashamed to admit, this episode made me cry. Desmond finally talking to Penny after 3 years is touching, and you can't help but feel something for him when he finally gets to talk to her.

Ben gave Michael a bearing of 325 to leave the island, but now it's 305.
Oxford University has also been the location of the Monastery where Desmond was a monk, and he met Penny, in Catch-22, and also the church where Charlie confessed to having relations in The Moth.
Desmond remembers things in the past because he's traveling to the future, which is why he doesn't remember Sayid and doesn't remember being on the island in the future until he talks to Penny, his constant.
Eloise dies before Daniel can teach her how to run the maze because Desmond has already visited him, causing him to teach her how to run it sooner, therefore she doesn't need to be alive when she is going to learn how to run it, because she ends up dying anyway.
Daniel giving Desmond the numbers to unstick Eloise in time could possibly not be a paradox because he obviously ended up figuring on the numbers eventually anyway, so it isn't changing anything, just possibly making it happen sooner than it originally did.
If George Minkowksi was time-jumping to the future, it would make sense, because he remembered everyting in the present day, and when he dies, it may have been a way of the universe course-correcting as Ms. Hawking said, which wouldn't be a paradox.
The music during the Desmond and Penny scenes is bloody amazing.
That phone rang for a damn long time, Penny was making a brotha sweat.
