Episode Analysis of 1.08 "Confidence Man"

This is a James "Sawyer" Ford flashback-centric episode.

We begin with Kate, who is walking up the beach, along the shore-line, carrying a bunch of bananas over her shoulder.

Initial Reaction to "Everybody Loves Hugo"

This episode was pretty awesome. I always enjoy Hurley-centric episodes and this one was no exception. On the surface, Hurley appears to be the source of the show's comedy, and merely that, but there is some deep-seeded seriousness to his story. He is the source which brought us to the numbers, one of the story's largest mythological mysteries. Speaking of which; we still don't know the answer to what the numbers really mean. Sure, Hurley is funny and he says "dude" a lot, but he's also a very serious character whose story tugs at your heart-strings. He sees dead people and relays messages from Jacob. He is haunted by these things, but tries to make the best of the situation. He can make you laugh one minute and cry the next. That says a lot about the depth of his character. This season; Hurley has become a leader. Everybody loves Hugo? You're damn straight we do.

3.13 The Man From Tallahassee

1. Locke has an appointment with a social worker, asks about his condition, he says he's single, has no girlfriend, was raised in foster care, that he never knew his parents, he stopped going to therapy, the woman says that his benefits have been suspended, that depression can be temporary, and if he starts going to therapy again, his benefits will be reimbursed. 2. Jack is still playing football with Tom, he stops to talk to Juliet, Kate tells Sayid and Locke that Juliet helped them escape, Rousseau is gone, they watch, Jack goes to see Ben at his house, who is in his wheelchair, shakes his hand, talks to him.

Kate tells them they're here to rescue Jack, Sayid says they can't just start shooting, that the circumstances have changed, Jack may not want to be rescued, Kate says that's not him, that they drugged them, but Sayid says that he doesn't look drugged, that until they know, their lives are a risk, Locke says that Jack must have reasons, they should wait until dark, when Jack is alone, and if he wants out, they'll get him out. 5. "It's Jack. The first time I saw him he was risking his life pulling people out of burning airplane wreckage. If he's shaking hands with the Others, I'm sure he has a good reason. We just have to go down there and find out what it is." Locke

Locke is alone in his apartment, watching Exposé, eating a TV dinner, a man comes to his door, Peter Talbot, wants to talk about his mother who is in trouble, she met a man, Adam Seward, a retired computer entrepreneur from Ontario, had something special, after 2 months she agreed to marry him, but Peter sensed there was something wrong about him, he says that Locke donated a kidney to him, that Adam Seward used to be Anthony Cooper, but Locke lies and says that it was anonymous. 7. It's night, they watch Jack talk to Juliet, and then go into a house. Kate goes in while Locke and Sayid guard the house, Jack is playing piano inside, there are cameras in the house, Jack says that they're watching them, that she has to go, but Sayid is captured and brought in by Ryan, Kate surrenders, she says it's only the two of them. 8. Locke goes to Ben's house, Ben says he can tell him where Jack is, but Locke says he's looking for the submarine, that they use it to travel to and from the island, Mikhail told him before he killed him, Alex comes in, there is a knock at the front door.
9. Tom is at Ben's house while Locke hides in the closet with Alex, he says Austen and Jarrah have been captured, Ben says separate them, that he wants to know how they found them, Ben wants to talk to Richard, Tom leaves, says he'll wait outside. From Lostpedia
10. Ben tells Richard to bring him the man from Tallahassee, Richard asks what they need him for, Ben says to just do it, he leaves, Locke asks what that means.
11. Locke wants the pack Sayid had with him, sends Alex to go and get it, Ben says that his daughter currently hates him, but Alex agrees to go.
12. John follows Cooper to a flower shop, where he's picking out flowers for his wedding with Mrs. Talbot, Locke says he's conning her, tells him about her son, Peter, wants him to end the relationship, leave town, or he'll tell her the truth, Cooper says he'll do it. From Lostpedia
13. "Because. Because it's not fair! You make people think that you're their family. And then you leave their life in ruins. And I'm not going to let you do it again! You're going to call off your engagement and go... or I'm going to tell her the truth. I want to hear you say it! You say you're going to leave!" Locke

Ben wants to get out of bed, sit in his wheelchair, says Locke knows what it's like to want some dignity, asks how he's going to pilot the sub, Ben says if he met Mikhail, he was in the communications station, he found the C4, that he's not planning on piloting the sub, but planning to destroy it, says he knows him, born in California, raised in foster care, wasted big part of his life in Tustin, pushing papers of company that manufactured industrial boxes, 4 years prior to the island he was in a wheelchair, knows how he ended up in it, asks if it hurt, Locke says he felt his back break.
15. Kate is being held in the rec-room, getting out of the handcuffs, Jack visits her, Tom tells him to be careful, Jack says they didn't hurt him, Kate says they didn't hurt her either, Jack says that this is where they live, Kate wants to know about the people they took, the kids, Jack says they're all safe, that's he's not with anyone, that he told her not to come back, he tells her he made a deal with them, they're going to let him go home, first thing in the morning, he trusts them because she told him to, when she asked him to save Sawyer's life, that it's their best chance, Juliet says they have to go, he says that he asked her not to come back for him and he wishes that she hadn't, but that he'll come back for her. 16. Locke is returning home with groceries, detectives are waiting for him, they question Locke about Peter Talbot, he says he was a solicitor, but the detectives say that he's wroth $200 million, they say that John's name and address were on a paper in his pocket, that they know that because he's dead.
17. Ben says it wasn't easy being in the hatch knowing Locke had no business walking around, couldn't ask about it without telling who he really was, so Locke says to ask him now that he knows, Ben wants to know if he was walking the day of the crash, if it was immediate, the moment he got there, Locke says he's wondering why it hasn't happened for him, Ben says he wants to destroy the sub because he's afraid it'll go away, the he knows if he ever leaves the island, he'll be back in the wheelchair again. 18. "That's what immediate means, Ben. You’re wondering why it hasn't happened for you. You're not recovering as fast as you'd like. How long has it been since Jack fixed you? A week? Now that I think about it, how'd you get sick in the first place?" Locke

Sayid is being held by Ryan, tied to a swing-set, Alex comes to get the pack, tells him her dad wants it, Sayid calls Alex by her name, says she looks like her mother, but Alex says her mother is dead, Sayid says he's sure that's what they told her, but before they can continue, Ryan beats him, tells him to shut up. Locke asks where they get their electricity, eats some of Ben's chicken, Ben says if Locke blows up the sub, there's a big problem with his people, says he was born on the island, not many can say that, most were recruited and brought there, love the place, do anything to defend it, but they need to know they can leave if they want to, the sub maintains that illusion, they're here because they want to be, but some not ready to make a full commitment, John has made that commitment, he can show him things, he says to picture of a box, imagine somewhere on the island, there's a very large box, that whatever he imagined, when you open the box, there it would be, Locke says imagine himself a sub, says Ben is cheating, that he's a hypocrite, Ben's in a wheelchair and Locke isn't. 21. "And now you have a choice. Because if you stop and if you think, I can show you things. Things I know you want to see very badly. Let me put it so you'll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you, John? 24. Alex returns with the pack, Locke takes the C4, Ben says Jack is leaving, the anomaly wiped out communications, it's a one way ticket, the sub can never come back, no one will find the island.

Locke confronts Anthony Cooper about Peter Talbot, says he thought he was going to leave, accuses him of killing Peter, Cooper says he was looking for an angle to make some money, that he's a con man, not a murder, that Mrs. Talbot is upset, she called off the wedding, he's drinking MacCutcheon's Whiskey, Locke doesn't believe him, says he's going to call the woman, but Cooper pushes him out the window. Locke is in the hospital, he survived, the detectives visit him and say that his father is gone, fled to Mexico, disappeared, could be anywhere in the world right now, a physical therapist tells the detectives that's enough, Locke has work to do, but he doesn't want to, the physical therapist forces Locke out of bed, says he fell 8 stories and survived, he picks him up and puts him in a wheelchair, Locke is frightened. 32. "John. You fell eight stories and survived, okay? I don't want to hear about what you can't do. Now let's go. It's going to be all right." Physical therapist
33. Locke is being held prisoner by Ben, he says he knows Ben wanted it to happen, that's why he left the C4 in Sayid's bag, that he wanted him to make it happen, Ben tells Richard to uncuff Locke.
34. "Do you remember earlier, John, when you called me a cheater? When you said I didn't deserve to live on this island? Well get this: there I was, shaking hands with Jack, and thinking I'd give almost anything to come up with a way to stop him from leaving... because to let him go would be a sign of weakness, of failure, of defeat. People would see that. They would know it. And that, John, would be the end of me. But to kill him... that would be cheating, because my people also heard me make a promise, and to break my word... that would be the end of me too. And then you came striding out of the jungle, John, to make my dream come true." Ben
35. Richard, Ben and Locke leave the room, head down the hall.
36. "When I asked you earlier if it hurt when you suffered your injury, I think you misunderstood me. Seems fairly obvious that when a person's back smashes into a hard surface after being thrown from a building, that that's going to sting a little. But I really wasn't asking about the physical pain." Ben "What, do you want to know if it hurt my feelings?" Locke "No John. I wanted to know what it felt like when your own father tried to kill you. He's the reason you destroyed the submarine, isn't he? You're afraid. You're afraid of him and this is the one place he can never find you. This is the one place he can never get to." Ben "What do you want from me?" Locke "I don't know how it happened, but you seem to have some communion with this island, John, and that makes you very, very important. You have no idea what you're talking about, of course, but in time you'll have a better understanding of things. So what do I want? I want to help you, John." Ben "Why?" Notes:

1. If Jack had actually left the island, that probably would have been the last time he saw Kate.
2. Did it hurt? Did it hurt, when you fell from the sky, John?
3. I love the scene where the physical therapist is putting John in the wheelchair, it's shot phenomenally well. The wheelchair becomes a character and Locke is so frightened by it. Good work, Jack Bender.
4. One of the best episode endings ever.
5. The food in Ben's refrigerator changes from when Locke opens it to when Ben opens it.

3.09 Stranger In A Strange Land

1. Sawyer and Kate are rowing back to the island, Kate says to go back, she doesn't want to leave Jack behind, Sawyer says no, that they'll kill them.
2. Jack is back in his cell, Tom says they're moving him, he thinks they're going to kill him.
3. "Oh, I don't know, Tom--the kind of people that would take a pregnant woman, that would hang Charlie from a tree, would drag our people out of the jungle, would kidnap children. That's the kind of people I think you are." Jack "You see this glass house you're living in, Jack? How about I get you some stones?" Tom
4. The Others have Juliet in handcuffs when they move Jack, they're putting her in his cell, a woman is escorting her.
5. Jack is in Phuket, Thailand, staying on the beach, he buys soda from a kid, a woman helps him with his kite, Achara.
6. They put Jack in Sawyer's cage, Tom brings Jack a cheese sandwich, he asks why they put Juliet in his cell, he says Juliet's in trouble, for him to stay put, but Jack points out the camera that they're watching him on, asks about the woman, the Sheriff.
7. Kate wants to sail around the island, but Sawyer says no, camp for the night.
8. Karl wakes up, he says the other island isn't where they live, just where they work, on projects, that they live on the main land, they gave the kids a better life than theirs, Alex and him made up names for the constellations in his backyard, he points out Ursa Theodorus, the Teddy Bear.
9. Juliet is let out to examine Ben, she wants Jack to help her, to look at Ben, shows him a photograph she just took of Ben's stitches, Jack says they're infected, she says she just killed someone, that it's complicated, but Jacks says no.
10. Jack eats at the restaurant of Achara's brother, she asks Jack why he didn't know how to fly a kite, he says his dad wasn't around, she says she has no interest in his father, asks if he's in Phuket to find himself, a man gives her an envelope filled with money, she tells Jack that she has a gift, Jack says it must be one hell of a gift.
11. The Sheriff reads Jacks tattoos, says the 5 and the stars are cute, but the Chinese is ironic, asks Jack if he knows what it says, says her name is Isabel, wants to talk to him and ask him questions, takes him with her, tells Alex to go check on her father.
12. Isabel takes Jack to a room where Juliet and Tom are waiting, she says they don't live on this island, that they don't even like going there, there was an incident she's investigating, wants to ask him questions, clear up inconsistencies, she asks Tom if Jack made comments about Juliet asking him to kill Ben, Tom says yes, she asks Jack the same thing, but he struggles to answers her, he says that he was lying, turned them against eachother to create chaos, Isabel asks why he's lying for Juliet, he wants to go back to his cage. 16. Sawyer and Kate wake up, Karl is gone, Sawyer finds him crying, hits him, tells him to go after Alex and find her, Karl says they'll kill him.

Alex smashes camera by Jack's cage, says he can tell the truth, asks him why he saved Ben after all they've done to him, that he should hate him, tells Jack they're going to read Juliet's verdict, that they're pretty strict about killing one of their own, she killed the man who was going to murder his friends, Jack asks if Ben is still in charge.

Alex takes Jack to Ben, he says he'd be more impressed if they had a capable surgeon, Ben tells Jack they had a surgeon, Ethan, Jack says he has a serious infection, he needs to be closely monitored, might be nerve damage or other complications, Jack wants to make a deal, wants him to let Juliet go too, Ben writes a note to stop the verdict. Jack stalks Achara, finds out that she's a tattoo artist, she says she sees who people are, her work is not a decoration, but definition, he asks her if she sees who he is, she says he's a leader, a great man, but it makes him lonely, frightened, angry, he says to put it on him, but she says it's against her people, that there will be consequences.
20. Jack and Alex stop Juliet's verdict, Isabel says Ben commuted her sentence, ordered her to be marked.
21. Jack gets beat up by Achara's brother and friends, who found out about the tattoo Achara gave him, Chet tells Jack he has to leave the country. From Lostpedia

Juliet brings Jack a grilled cheese the way he likes it, he makes her show him the mark they gave her, she asks why he helped her, he says Ben told them both he'd let them go, that they're going to make sure he keeps his promise together, Juliet tells him the Others will be coming for him, because his friends know where they are, so they have to leave that island to go back to where they live now, home. 1. Good plan, Kate. You just went through all the trouble to get away, and now you want to go back and get Jack even after he just told you not to. Sorry Kate, I'm on Sawyer and Jack's side on this one.

3. Poor Jack. You have to stay in the cage Sawyer and Kate had sex in.
4. Worst sex scene ever? Yeah, I wasn't interested in this one.

7. Matthew Fox's actual tattoo says "Eagles high, cleaving sky."
8. Apparently Isabel dies off screen in Through the Looking Glass. What crap.
9. Sorry, LOST, but this one time, I just have to say... GAY! Even Exposé I can deal with compared to this, even Fire + Water! Probably the worst episode following best episode combo.

2.20 Two for the Road

1. Michael is unconscious, Jack thinks maybe they just let him go, Kate says that he's alone.
2. Ana Lucia and her partner pull up to the Police Station, you can see the number 15, 16, 23 and 42 on the police cars at the station.
3. Ana Lucia's mom questions her, Jason McCormack found just about 3 AM in a parking lot, dead for 1 hour before anyone saw him, Crime Scene pulled gun from dumpster, registration filed off, no prints, no witnesses, her mom offers to help her, she doesn't want it, quits the Los Angeles Police Department. 4. Ana brings Benry breakfast, tells him she was a cop. He says something inaudible to her, than he attacks her, chokes her, but Locke comes to her rescue.
5. "You killed 2 of us, good people. You're the killer, Ana Lucia." Henry
6. Ana Lucia is working in Airport Security, she meets Christina Shephard, tells him she used to be a cop, he tells her he just stopped being a doctor, asks her to go to Sydney with him, they pick names for eachother, he's Tom and she's Sarah.
7. "Maybe fate has just thrown the two of us together." Christian From Lostpedia
8. Locke asks Benry why he hurt Ana and he didn't hurt him, he says Locke is one of the good ones, that his people will kill him, Locke asks why his own people would want to kill him, he says because he failed his mission to get Locke, he tells him about their leader.
9. "Because the man in charge, he's a great man, John, a brilliant man, but he's not a forgiving man. He'll kill me because I failed, John. I failed my mission. When that woman caught me in her trap I was on my way here, John. I was coming for you." Benry
10. Ana Lucia asks Sawyer for a gun, but he says no.
11. Ana in Sydney hotel, 3:51 AM, she has a drink, Christian knocks on her door, after 4 days of drinking and doing nothing, he says it's time for protection duty, raining, she brings him to house, he argues with an Australian woman, says he pays the mortgage.
12. "She's my daughter and I have every right to see her!" Christian yells at the woman.
13. Hurley asks Sayid for the radio so he can play it for Libby, but Sayid says it doesn't work and suggests taking her to the beach that he took Shannon to.
14. Locke suggests that they made the trade, gave Michael to them for Benry, but Jack says they didn't give them anything, but Locke questions if it was just a coincidence, Jack says he was shouting and Michael heard his voice.
15. Ana Lucia jumps Sawyer in the jungle, steals his gun.
16. Ana Lucia and Christian in the car, she asks about the woman, tells him her name is Ana Lucia, she stops in front of a bar, Sawyer walks into the door as Christian is getting out. From Lost Hatch
17. Hurley packs a picnic for Libby.
18. Locke covers for Ana to Jack, says he left the water on in the bathroom, that she slipped and hit her head.

Michael wakes up, says he found them, hiked North to the beach, followed the shoreline, saw one of them, dirty, worn clothes, no shoes, they live in tents, eat dried fish, he counted 22 of them, didn't see anyone they took, Walt, Cindy, the kids, they have a hatch, metal doors, guarded 24 hours a day, 2 guards and 2 guns, most of them are old, half are women, that he came back to tell them, so they could get Walt back.
20. Jack tells Locke that he was right about Benry, about what he and Sayid did when the first put him in the armory, they argue that something has to be done.
21. Hurley is lost trying to lead Libby to the beach Sayid told him about, he leads him to their beach instead, but Libby says they can just have a picnic there, but Hurley forgot the blankets and the drinks, so Libby says she'll get blankets and Hurley should go get wine she saw Rose and Bernard take.
22. "Maybe if I get drunk enough, I'll remember where I know you from." Hurley
23. Sawyer is reading Bad Twin by Gary Troup, Jack takes it from Sawyer and throws it in the fire so Sawyer will give him the guns, points his gun at Sawyer, but Sawyer reaches for his gun and realizes that Ana stole his gun, Locke tells Jack about Benry attacking her. From Lost Hatch
24. Ana goes into the armory with the gun to talk to Benry, gives him a knife to cut himself loose, he tells her that Goodwin kept saying she was misunderstood, that he thought she was worthy, that he could change her.
25. Jack is at the Sydney Airport arguing with the woman at the counter about his father's body, while Ana Lucia calls her mom nearby, tells her she's in Sydney, that she made a mistake and wants to come home, that she's on Oceanic Flight 815.
26. Ana tells Michael that she wants to kill Benry because he attacked her, but she can't do it, Michael says he'll do it, to give him the gun, the combo to the armory.

3. We later find out that the woman Christian is arguing with in Sydney is Claire's Aunt Lindsey.
4. Sawyer later meets Christian in the same bar that Ana Lucia dropped him off at.
5. Michael didn't completely lie, he told the truth about what he saw, except for not seeing Walt, he just didn't tell them that he was leading them to a trap.

2.07 The Other 48 Days

1. Day 1--Flight 815 plane crash, tail section of the plane. Little boy, Zack. Emma, little girl, Ana Lucia revives her. Eko pulls the dead bodies out of the water. Libby is a clinical psychologist, went to Medical School for a year before she dropped out. Goodwin runs out of the jungle to alert the tailies. Bernard stuck in tree in jungle, Ana Lucia gets him down. They don't have water or matches. Goodwin says he works for the Peace Corps. Bernard asks Eko if he pulled his wife, Rose, out of the water. The "Others" attack them in the night, they take 3 of them, but Eko kills 2 of them. From Lostpedia
2. Day 2--Two dead bodies have no wallets, cell phones or keys. They have no shoes, nothing in their pockets, and no labels on their clothes. People missing, blonde guy, curly guy, German guy who was helping with the injured. Nathan, Goodwin and Cindy don't want to leave the beach, Ana Lucia does. "These people were here before us." 3. Day 3--Donald's infection is getting worse, he'll be the 4th to go.
4. Day 5--Donald dies. They bury him with the rest of the bodies. From Lostpedia
5. Day 7--They catch a chicken. Eko carves his Jesus stick. Libby tells him it's not his fault, that he was just defending himself.
6. Day 12--Nathan disappears for two hours, says he went to the bathroom. Ana Lucia is suspicious. Others come, take the kids. Ana Lucia kills one, list in the pocket, 9 people, what they look like, what they're wearing, knife in the pocket. Nathan says maybe they're watching them, but Ana accuses Nathan. Ana wants to leave the beach. Goodwin protects Nathan, but also agrees that maybe it's time to put the signal fire out.

7. Day 15--They leave the beach. They've been walking. They find water, shelter, food.
8. Day 17--Ana Lucia digs hole, Libby is also suspicious of Nathan. "Why do you think I'm digging this hole?" Ana Lucia thinks that Nathan is one of the Others.
9. Day 19--Bernard and Nathan are making rabbit traps. Ana Lucia puts Nathan in the pit, interrogates him. Ana says she didn't see him on the plane, Cindy agrees that she never saw him either, that she's good at remembering the faces of the passengers. Libby says he doesn't talk about himself. Nathan says he's from Canada, was in Australia on a company retreat, stayed a couple of extra days to sight-see, in the lavatory on the plane.
10. Day 23--Someone gives Nathan food. He's been in there 4 days. Nathan thinks Ana should let him go. "If I were a savage, I would've cut off his finger already. That's tomorrow." Ana Lucia tells Goodwin, but he lets Nathan go, tells him Ana is going to hurt him, directs him to the beach, 5 miles away, but snaps his neck, kills him.
11. Day 24--Nathan's gone. "They found us, it's time to move." Ana Lucia
12. Day 26--They're still walking. They come to a beach.
13. Day 27--They find a station, QUARANTINE, The Arrow, bible, glass eye, radio. They go to higher ground for a radio signal. Ana Lucia, Goodwin, knife, US Military, Army, probably 20 years old. "If you had cut off his finger and he still told you he was on the plane, I think maybe you would've started to believe you had the wrong guy. Nathan was not a good person. That's why he wasn't on the list." Goodwin says the children are fine. From Lostpedia
14. Day 41--Bernard gets a radio signal, it's Boone from the beachcraft. "It's them." Ana Lucia says it's the Others. "You waited 40 days to cry." Eko finally speaks.
15. Day 45--beach, fishing, Libby and Cindy find Jin wash up on shore. Michael and Sawyer arrive, they put them all in the pit.
16. Day 47--Michael, Jin and Sawyer are released from the pit, the tailies take them back to The Arrow station. Bernard asks them about Rose.
17. Day 48--Cindy is gone, Shannon is shot by Ana Lucia.
