How long has it been for you since... we first met, since you walked into our camp and you spoke to Richard?" Widmore "Four days." Locke "[Chuckles] That's incredible." Widmore
- "The camera in the desert--that was yours?" Locke "Yeah." Widmore "How did you know I'd be there?" Locke "Well, that's the exit. I was afraid Benjamin might fool you into leaving the Island, as he did with me. I was their leader." Widmore "The Others?" Locke "They're not the "Others" to me. They're my people. We protected the Island peacefully for more than three decades. But then I was exiled... by him, just as you were." Widmore "No. Ben wasn't even there when I left. He was already gone. I wasn't exiled. I... chose to leave." Locke "Why would you do that, John? [Pause] You've come to bring them back... the ones who left." Widmore "[Sighs] No." Locke "I understand you lying to me. I do. But there's something you should know. All your friends who left the Island? They've been back three years." Widmore "Three years?" Locke "They've gone back to their normal lives. [Widmore produces a newspaper and hands it to Locke.] And none of them has spoken a word of truth about where they were." Widmore [Locke looks at the newspaper, the London Daily Tribune from January 14, 2005. Its headline: "OCEANIC SIX: SURVIVORS RECEIVE HEROES WELCOME". Locke puts the paper down.] "I have to bring them back." Locke "And I'm going to do everything in my power to help you do that." Widmore [Widmore gets up to leave.] "Why? He saved me." Locke "No, John, he used you. He waited until you showed up so that you could help him get to the Island. Charles Widmore is the reason I moved the Island! So that he could never find it again, to keep him away so that you could lead. You can't do this. If anything happens to you... John, you have no idea how important you are. Let me help you." The Life & Death of Jeremy Bentham, Initial Reaction
Wow, yeah, I really really hate Ben now. I hope Locke beats him with Eko's Jesus stick and then Desmond finds the island and beats him with his bloody fists. I was really hoping that Locke discovering someone that he recognized would end up being Walt, but alas, it was stupid evil Benjamin Linus, the master manipulator and liar extraordinaire. Beat his face more, Locke!
Questions:
Questions:
- Is Christian Shephard really alive? Did he have the same experience as Locke?
- Does Walt have to go back to the island? Why or why not?
- Did Ben kill Locke because he got the information that he needed or because he knew that he had to die to go back to the island?
- How does Ben know Eloise Hawking? Why is he disturbed by hearing her name?
- Is Helen really dead? Did Abaddon lie to keep Locke from going to see her?
- Did Frank land the plane on the runway near The Hydra on Alcatraz island?
- Who did Frank take off with?
- Are Jack, Kate and Hurley in a different time from the rest of the survivors of the Ajira Airways crash? Are the plane crash survivors in present time?
- Why did Ben and Locke flash with them? Where are Sun and Sayid?
- What, why, who and when are the war that is coming to the island?
- How did Ben convince Widmore to leave the island?
- Why is Walt having dreams about Locke?
- Is Caesar working for Charles Widmore?
- In the opening sequence, Caesar finds copies of the same map that Rousseau gave Sayid, a page from the notebook of Daniel Faraday, and the map of the Temple that Ben gave to Alex and Rousseau.
- So, Sayid has clearly turned into Jimmy Carter after working for Ben for a while.
- Whyyyyyyyy did you have to kill Matthew Abaddon?!?!?!
- Who is good and who is fucking bad? Widmore or Ben? I still don't know dammit!
- I felt really bad for Locke in this episode. The face he made right before he died was the most frightening look I've ever seen on Locke.
- I hate Ben now. Especially if he killed Desmond and/or Penny and Charlie too. I really had that bug-eyed little fucker.
- I love how you can clean up an entire crime scene with a rag and a bottle of Windex.
- The place where they are holding the injured survivors appears to be Ben's office at The Hydra, as seen previously in a deleted scene.
- Locke didn't tell Walt he was Jeremy Bentham.
- Hurley was painting a Sphinx at Santa Rosa.
- Helen's last name was Norwood and she died on April 4, 2006.
That all being said, I liked this episode. Although, I'm really wondering where the season is going right now. I really have no idea what they're going to do now that they're back on the island so soon. What's going to happen now?

- Who ran Emily Locke over with their car?
- How in the world was that girl almost six months pregnant?
- Did John Locke live as an infant because he's special?
- What is the significance of Locke's dream about Horace Goodspeed?
- Why is Horace on a time loop?
- Did Mrs. Locke really not know who Richard Alpert was?
- How does Richard Alpert get off the Island?
- Why can Hurley, Locke and Ben see the cabin but no one else can?
- Why doesn't the knife belong to John already?
- Was the sand directly from the Island?
- Which items was John supposed to pick according to Richard?
- What is the significance of the drawing John did of the Smoke Monster?
- What miracle happened to Matthew Abaddon?
- Why does Matthew Abaddon tell Locke to go on a walkabout? What did he do on his?
- Why does Mr. Abaddon think that he and John Locke will run into eachother again?
- Why is Claire with Christian Shephard in the cabin? Why is she so calm, so content?
- Is Claire dead? Is she the Smoke Monster?
- Why does Christian ask Locke not to tell that he saw Claire?
- Why is Christian Shephard in the cabin?
- Does the Island really move? Does it move through time and through space?
- "How long?" Locke "I don't know. I've been following him." Ben "What? What do you mean, you've been following him?" Locke "I'm not even in front." Hurley "I have no idea where the cabin is. Hugo's the last one who saw it." Ben "Oh, this is just awesome." Hurley
- "Oh, building a place--a little getaway for me and the misses. I mean, sometimes you need a break from the D.I., y'know? The DHARMA Initiative? (Laughs) I'm not making any sense, am I?" Horace Goodspeed
- "I'm Horace. [Grunting] Godspeed, John. [Thud]" Horace
- "[Locke awakes] Hugo." Locke "(Muttering) Mallomars." Hurley "Wake up, Hugo." Locke
- "You can't smoke in here, Mrs. Locke." Nurse [Mrs. Locke closes her lighter.] "Oh. Of course. I'm sorry." Mrs. Locke
- "Well, I have a theory as to why we're the only ones who can see it." Hurley "I'd love to hear it." Locke "I think we can see it 'cause we're the craziest." Hurley
- [Playing Backgammon] "That game's stupid." John
- "Okay, now tell me, John, which of these things belong to you?" Richard "To--to keep?" John "No, no, John. Which of these things belong to you already?" Richard
- "So... This is where you shot Locke and left him for dead, huh?" Hurley "Yes, Hugo, I was standing right where you are now when I pulled the trigger. Should have realized at the time that it was pointless, but... I really wasn't thinking clearly." Ben [Hurley steps back a little]
- "He actually thinks staying was his idea. Not bad, John. Not bad at all." Ben "I'm not you." Locke "You're certainly not." Ben
- "I'm not a scientist! I like boxing and fishing and cars. I like sports!" John
- "Destiny, John, is a fickle bitch." Ben
- "I can't "walkabout" anything. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a cripple." Locke "Is that what you are, Mr. Locke? I went on my walkabout convinced I was one thing, but I came back another. I found out what I was made of, who I was." Abaddon "And here you are, an orderly." Locke
- "Yeah, I'm cool with you going in alone, too." Hurley
- The scene with Hurley and Ben sharing the Apollo Candy Bar. Jorge Garcia and Michael Emerson are brilliant.
- Buddy Holly plays in the opening scene. Buddy Holly died in a plane crash.
- It looks like Ben is the third wheel.
- The search and tests for the leader of the Island given by Richard Alpert is much like the Tibetan Buddhist ritual for the choice of the Dalai Lama. The Panchen Lama chooses the Dalai Lama, which is much like Richard Alpert's role. I'm guessing that Jacob chose Richard as the Panchen. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama also chooses the Panchen. So, which came first, the Panchen or the Dalai, the chick or the egg?
- Richard Alpert gave young Locke the same compass that he gave him on the Island, which John then returned back to him in the past, which Richard then shows him in this episode.
- The drawing of the Smoke Monster is reminiscent of the scene in Exodus, Part 2.
- From Lostpedia: The comic book that Richard shows to John is "Mystery Tales" Issue #40, which was published in April of 1956 by Atlas Comics. The cover contains the text "What was the Secret of the Mysterious Hidden Land?" and "Does it Pay to Ignore the Voice of Warning?"
- I feel really bad for young and older Locke in this episode. He was abandoned by his Biological Mother, then his adoptive Mother is mean to him, Richard Alpert is snappy with hm, get gets beat up in high school, made fun of, and stuffed in a locker, and then he has to go through grueling Physical Therapy after getting thrown eight stories out of a window from his own father.
- Locke is locked in a locker. He likes boxing. Very funny.
- The way that Matthew Abaddon says "Mr. Locke" is just like Walt. This led to theories that this is future Walt, which is obviously impossible, but still cool.
- The scene where Matthew Abaddon pushes John Locke in his wheelchair to a flight of stairs and stops totally freaks me out. Every time I watch it, I think he's going to push him down the flight of stairs. That scene just creeps me the hell out.
- Terry O'Quinn's acting in the Physical Therapy scenes is so great. He doesn't use his legs at all. He really makes you feel his pain and believe that he's paralyzed.
- John Locke finally takes Matthew Abaddon's advice and goes on a walkabout in Walkabout.
- Claire clearly had been smoking some illegal substances in that cabin. She also freaks me out in that scene.

- Miles says he'll tell why they're there if he can have the satellite phone to call the freighter, he calls Regina, she says Minkowski can't come to the phone, hangs up.
- Dan wants to bring Naomi's body back on the helicopter, but Frank says they can't bring any extra weight, that he'll get her on the next run.
- Frank asks Juliet who she is, her name, says she wasn't on the plane, that he memorized the manifest, he says that she's a native, he tells Miles.
- "You know how many times I studied that damn manifest? Believe me there's no Juliet Burke on that plane. She's a native." Frank
- Miles asks where he is, says they're there for Benjamin Linus.
From Lostpedia
- "You wanna know why we're here, I'll tell you why we're here! We're here for Benjamin Linus. Now where is he? " Miles
- Locke wants to kill Ben, people object, Locke tells Rousseau to take Alex away, but Ben says that he has answers, so Locke asks about the smoke monster, but Ben doesn't have an answer for him, says he doesn't know, so Locke is going to shoot him.
- Ben, however, knows a lot about Charlotte.
- "Her name is Charlotte Lewis! Charlotte Staples Lewis. Born July 2nd, 1979, Essex, England. Parents David and Jeanette. Eldest of three, all girls. She was raised in Bromsgrove. Did her undergraduate studies at Kent. Took her PhD in Cultural Anthropology at Oxford. She's here with two other team members and a pilot. Their names Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume, Frank Lapidus. Your instinct was right, John, these people are a threat, and if you shoot me you'll never know how great a threat they were. Because I know what they're doing here. I know what they want." Ben
- Ben says they want him, that he knows because he has a man on their boat.
- Was the Christiane I looking for the Black Rock?
- Why is Daniel Faraday so upset about the crash of Oceanic Flight 815?
- Was he so upset because he knew that the plane would crash? About the people on the island? Because he's already been there?
- Who is the woman that was with Daniel?
- Why can Jacob's cabin move? Where did it go?
- Why did Walt tell Locke he had work to do? Why kill Naomi?
- Where did Kelvin's body go? Is he still alive?
- What are Miles' abilities? How can he talk to the dead?
- What does Miles' ghostbuster machine do?
- Why do the photograph frames change from when Miles goes upstairs to when he comes back down? Did Miles change something?
- Um, what's up with the light, McFly?
- How did a polar bear with a Hydra logo get in the middle of the jungle? How long has it been there?
- Why does Charlotte appear to recognize The Hydra logo on the collar?
- Why was Frank Lapidus supposed to pilot Flight 815 that day? Why didn't he?
- Who does Matthew Abadonn work for? Why does he think there are no survivors?
- How did they get a photograph of Benjamin Linus?
- Why does Frank say that Juliet is one of the natives?
- "Dude. What's wrong with you. You're gonna get struck by lightning." Hurley "The storm's about to pass, Hugo." Locke "It's a frigging monsoon, we gotta..." Hurley
- "You mind telling us who you're getting your orders from, Colonel Kurtz?" Sawyer
- "Erm. I'm not in charge of packing so." Daniel
- "What the hell do you mean you saw Walt? In a dream?" Sawyer "No dream, it was Walt. Only, taller." Locke "Taller? What like a giant? Okay, what exactly did Walt tell you?" Sawyer
- "What you didn't ask any follow-up questions?" Sawyer "Ben had shot me and left me for dead, Walt saved my life, so I pretty much took him at his word." Locke "He shot you? Yet here you are fit as a fiddle tromping through the jungle." Sawyer
- "Back up, handsome." Miles
- "Keep your mouth shut, Mr Linus." Karl "Karl! Now, if you're gonna sleep with my daughter, I insist you call me Ben." Ben
- "Wasting your time, Yoda." Sawyer
- "It's only a matter of time before he gets us, Johnny, and I bet he's already figured out how he's gonna do it. So you walk him." Sawyer
- "Come on, how stupid do you think I..." Miles [Miles and Dan duck as gunshots fire. Sayid and Juliet appear from the jungle. Kate takes Dan's gun.] "I dunno, Miles, how stupid are ya?" Jack
- "Hi." Charlotte "Hi yourself." Locke
- "Someone could have told me that the cavalry were here." Kate "I gave you that wink." Jack [Juliet laughs]
- "I'm a physicist. Well, I guess you could call me a physicist, I don't really like being pigeon-holed into one..." Daniel "Dan, I swear to God you say one more word I'm gonna break your fingers." Miles
- "And what do you do, Miles?" Sayid "I collect soil samples." Miles "Oh, that's nice, well maybe you can help me. You say you're not here on a rescue mission, and the world at large believes us to be dead. But here we are alive and well, and you don't seem remotely surprised to see us." Sayid "[Sarcastically] Oh my God, you guys were on Oceanic Flight 815, wow! That better?" Miles
- "Sure, who are we to argue with taller ghost Walt." Sawyer
- "I saw a cow." Frank
- "Crash? The hell kind of pilot d'you think I am?" Frank
- "Tell you what, I'll give you the phone if you tell me what you people are doing here." Jack "I'll tell you what we're doing here if you give me the phone." Miles "Don't say anything about your sister." Jack
- "What's the point, that's not Naomi, it's just meat." Miles
- "Really? Because it seemed like you were about to shoot me yourself." Charlotte "What good would you be to me dead?" Locke "I feel much more comfortable now. Thanks." Charlotte
- "I guess this is the part where I'm supposed to say I told you so." Sawyer
- "What is the Monster?" Locke "What?" Ben "The black smoke, the Monster, what is it?" Locke "I don't know." Ben "Then goodbye, Benjamin." Locke
- I think Daniel Faraday doesn't know why he's upset because it hasn't happened yet.
- From Lostpedia: Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist who contributed to the study of electromagnetism. From Wikipedia: "He established that magnetism could affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomena." In this episode, Daniel Faraday comments on abnormalities in the light rays on the Island and defines himself as a physicist.
- The photograph frames by the stairs in the home that Miles goes to change from when he goes upstairs to when he comes back down.
From Lostpedia
- Miles says that Jack would say "tell my sister I love her," but we know, in fact, that Jack does have a sister, Claire, that he doesn't know about.
- Matthew Abaddon is so creepy.
- Charlotte Staples Lewis was named after C.S. Lewis.
