Episode Analysis of 1.11 "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues"

This episode was written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and directed by Stephen Williams. It originally aired on December 8th, 2004.

This is a Jack Shephard flashback-centric episode.   

We begin exactly where we left off, in Raised By Another, in the caves, with Sayid unconscious, Hurley telling Jack, who is tending to Sayid's wounds, and Kate, who asks questions, about Ethan not being in the flight manifest, while Locke looks on in the background. The other survivors in the caves begin to become aware of the situation as Jack raises his voice. Michael joins them to talk about Ethan.

HURLEY: "He wasn't on the plane."

KATE: "Who wasn't on the plane?"

HURLEY: "Ethan.. The Canadian guy. He's not on the passenger manifest."

JACK: "Well, where the hell is he?" [He gets up from tending to Sayid's wound.]

HURLEY: "I don't know. I saw him yesterday, but now.."

JACK: [raising his voice] "Has anyone seen Ethan?"

KATE: "Sayid's leg.."

JACK: [talking louder] "Has anyone seen Ethan?"

1. A close-up of Claire's eye, she is dazed and bloody, was in a car accident, her mum went through the wind-shield, is laying in the street, unconscious, a truck is in front of them. From Lostpedia
2. Claire wakes up, Charlie fixed a picnic for her, says he wants to seize the day.
3. Sayid says the Others are 2 miles away according to the map, Locke says it's an electrical wiring map, it may not be accurate, Sayid and Locke argue, but Kate just asks Mikhail if they're going the right way, he says yes, Rousseau says to shoot Mikhail, but Kate says no.
4. Claire and Charlie are having their picnic, but Desmond shows up and asks Charlie to go boar hunting with him, Claire sees birds flying overhead and says she thinks she knows how to get off the island.
5. Claire wants Jin's nets and fish, a flock of sea birds flew over, they're migratory, heading south, scientists tag birds to track them, they'll eventually land in Australia or New Zealand, someone gathers them, they can catch one and send a message with it.
6. Charlie is doubtful about Claire's plan, asks how she knows so much about birds, she says she watched a lot of nature shows with her mum.
7. Claire gets stitches, an Officer questions her, asks how the accident happened, she says that a truck forced her off the road, she was driving, father died when she was 2, truck hit them, came out of nowhere, the Officer says it's standard procedure when there's fatality, but her mother isn't dead, she's in surgery.
8. Kate questions why Rousseau hasn't asked questions about Alex, Rousseau asks her if she cares about her friend, Jack.
9. "Imagine sixteen years from now, you’re told he’s still alive, but in your heart, you know that he wouldn’t remember you, he wouldn’t know you. He wouldn’t even know that you ever cared about him. I haven’t asked you questions about my daughter, because I do not want to know the answers." Rousseau
10. Mikhail says he was recruited when he was 24, approached by a man, brought in on the submarine, 2 weeks ago underwater beacon stopped emitting locator signal, an event, electromagnetic pulse, impossible to come back, not capable of understanding because she's not on the list.
11. "The man who brought me here, who brought all of my people here, he is a magnificent man. I will try to make this as simple as I can. You are not on the list because you are flawed. Because you are angry, and weak, and frightened." Mikhail
12. "The more I learn about your people, the more I suspect you’re not as omniscient as you’d have us believe. Don’t speak to us as if you know us." Sayid
13. Mikhail knows all of them, about them.

15. Rousseau interrupts Mikhail to point out the sonic fence.
16. Jin and Sun help Claire, get nets, make chum, Sun says her mother had high hopes for her, this would be her worst nightmare, Claire says her mum was a librarian.
17. Claire visits her mom in the hospital, Aunt Lindsey blames her, doctor says stabilized immediate injuries, mom suffered a severe head trauma, wait for swelling in her brain to go down before determining the extent of her injuries, looking at widespread damage, that right now machines are keeping her alive. 18. The expenses have been taken care of, the doctor has been asked to keep it confidential.
19. Claire is about to catch one of the birds, but Desmond scares the birds away with gun shots, Desmond says sorry, he was catching a boar, but Claire wants to know what's going on, is suspicious of Demond and Charlie.
20. Sayid says don't touch the pylons, Mikhail says they're a security parameter, sensors triggered if anyone passes between them, alarm system, trap, Mikhail says it hasn't functioned in years, they encircle entire barracks, no way around. From Lostpedia
21. Locke pushes Mikhail through the sensors to see if they work or not, the barrier goes on, Mikhail starts to have a seizure, falls to the ground, from a cerebral hemorrhage, blood coming out of the ears, foaming from the mouth. From Lostpedia

23. Sayid and Kate are angry about what Locke did, but say they'll talk about it later, first they have to figure out how to get through the fence, Kate says they don't go through, they go over the fence, asks Sayid to get the axe, which is in Locke's pack, which also has C4. Sayid asks why, Locke says you never know when C4 will come handy.
24. Charlie doesn't want to give Claire false hope, thinks she might be overreacting, but she kicks him out of her tent, doesn't want her baby around liars.
25. Christian Shephard is with Claire's mom, Lindsey says Carole wouldn't want him there, they argue, but Christian tells Claire he's the one taking care of the bills, that he's her father.
26. They chop down a tree and place it on top of the pylon, Kate climbs up the tree and over the fence, jumps down, she's okay, everyone follows.
27. "The system appears to fire a sonic pulse when an object breaks the plane between two pylons. So, as long as we don’t break the plane, we should remain unharmed." Sayid
28. Sun tells Claire she has every right to be upset, Charlie and Desmond are arguing, Claire asks Sun to watch Aaron, says she's going to get some answers.
29. Christian goes to see Claire at her piercing shop, they have coffee, he says his doctor friend told him about the accident, him and mom had a fling, was in Los Angeles when she was pregnant, came out a bunch of times when she was little, stayed over, gave her toys, sang to her, stopped coming because Lindsey hates him, mother didn't like that he had another family, that he came because he wants to help, wants her to look at alternatives, to relieve her pain, Claire gets angry, doesn't want to kill her, says he might be her father, but she doesn't even know his name, and wants to keep it that way. 30. "Claire! Claire, Claire listen to me. Do not keep your mother alive for the wrong reasons. Now there is hope and there is guilt. And believe me, I know the difference. Bye kiddo, it was great seeing you again." Christian
31. Claire follows Desmond, he catches a bird, she asks how he knew, he says he didn't, but Claire says he walked straight there, Desmond tells her what's going on with Charlie. From Lostpedia
32. "I don’t know, but you know, you walked straight here, no doubt at all about where you were going. You came right to this beach and right to this rock, and lo and behold, there’s the bird. Claire goes to see her mom in the hospital, she's pregnant, she turns the television on so mom can hear her nature shows, tells her about the baby, giving it away, for the best, doesn't know how she did it, raising her alone, that she's sorry, for the awful things she said to her in the car, that she wished she was dead, the accident, everything. 36. Charlie reads the note Claire wrote and Claire sets the bird free with the note attached.
37. "To whom it may concern, we are survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. We have survived on this island for 80 days. We were 6 hours into the flight when the pilot said we were off course and turned back towards Fiji. We hit turbulence and crashed. We’ve been waiting here, all this time, waiting for rescue that has not come. We do not know where we are, we only know you have not found us. We’ve done our best to live on this island. 2.23 Live Together, Die Alone

1. Sayid, Sawyer and Jack swim to the boat offshore, there is opera music playing, gunshots fired from beneath the deck, Desmond has returned. From Lostpedia
2. Jack tells Kate to tell everyone that Desmond is back, Jack questions why Desmond came back to the island.
3. "Do ya think I did it on purpose?" Desmond
4. Desmond sailed due West for 2 and a half weeks at 9 knots, he should've been in Fiji in less than a week, Desmond asks Jack is they're still pushing the button.
5. "This is it. This is all there is left. The ocean and this place here. We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe. There's no outside world. There's no escape." Desmond

Jack wants to tell Kate, but Sayid says no, that Michael can't sense that they know he's lying.

13. Locke doesn't want Eko to push the button, but Eko kicks him out of the hatch.

15. Jack is giving out the guns, Kate is curious about others and what they're doing with costumes and fake beards, that if it's just what they want them to think, Michael says they really are that way.

Desmond is in Los Angeles, in a coffee shop, has no American money, Libby pays $4 for his coffee, Desmond tells her about his sailing race around the world in 8 months, that he needs $42,000 for a boat. Desmond tells Libby about Charles Widmore and Penny, that he took her away from him, that he try to buy Desmond off. From Lostpedia
19. Libby says she has a boat, that it was her husband's, he got sick, wanted to sail to the Mediterranean, passed away about a month ago, she gives Desmond her boat, David, her husband, named it after her, "Elizabeth."
20. "Then, I thank you, Elizabeth. And I shall win this race, for love." Desmond
21. Sayid asks Sun to talk to Jin about sailing the boat, Jin says he won't leave Sun, but she says she's going with them.
22. Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and Michael walking through the jungle, a bird flies overhead, appears to say "Hurley," Michael tries to shoot at it but there are no bullets in his gun, Jack says that he must have forgotten to load it.
23. Charlie walks up on Locke crying in the jungle, tells him about Desmond being back.
24. Desmond tells Claire not to inject herself with the vaccine, that he shot himself every 9 days for 3 years and it did nothing.
25. Desmond is at the same stadium on the same night that he met Jack, when he's doing a Tour de Stade, Penny shows up in the parking lot, Desmond wants to know how she found him, she asks why he didn't write to her, but he doesn't tell her that he did. Desmond asks Penny when she's getting married, but she says they haven't set a date yet. From Lostpedia

31. Michael is acting suspicious, but he thanks Jack for coming along with him.

33. Sun gets sick on the boat, but it's not seasickness.

38. Desmond is on his sailing race, waves crashing over the boat, he wraps his things safely, his book, Penny's photograph, he is knocked out on the deck of the boat, washes up on the island, man in yellow hazmat suit finds him, takes him to The Swan.
39. "Are you him?" Kelvin "What?" Desmond "What did one snowman say to the other?" Kelvin
40. Kelvin Inman, the same man, Joe Inman, the CIA operative that forced Sayid to torture in Iraq, says he found Desmond washed up on shore, says there was no boat, alarm goes off, Kelvin pushed the button, Desmond asks what it is.
41. "Just saving the world." Kelvin
42. Desmond watches the Orientation film, he asks Kelvin about the missing parts.
43. "Radzinski made some edits." Kelvin
44. Kelvin says that Radzinski was his partner, to put the film back behind Turn of the Screw when he's done, Desmond asks why he wears the hazmat suit when he goes outside, Kelvin says so he doesn't get infected, he tells Desmond to take the vaccine every 9 days, that he was out there for a while before he found him, that he hopes it's not too late.
45. Desmond asks Locke about Mr. Eko, Locke tells him he's a priest and Desmond is weary about locking him out, Eko is pounding on the door, he then climbs out of the hatch through the shaft that Jack, Locke and Kate originally climbed down to get in the hatch, with the quarantine door that they blew off with the dynamite from the Black Rock. 46. Eko asks Charlie about the hatch door being blow off, where the dynamite is.
47. Kate spots others following them in the jungle, her and Sawyer turn the tables on them, Sawyer kills one of them, the other gets away, Jack says they've already been warned, gives up that he already knows what Michael did, he confesses, that he let "Henry" go, killed Libby and Ana Lucia, Hurley wants to go back, but Jack says no, that he has a plan.
48. Sayid, Jin and Sun arrive to the rock with the hole in it by the shore.
49. Charlie leads Eko to the dynamite, he wants to blow up the blast door.
50. "It would take an atom bomb, brother. Tell him not to bother." Desmond
51. Kelvin shows Desmond how to fake a lockdown so he can draw on the blast door map, Desmond puts a cart under the door, Kelvin mixes detergent in a cup to paint with it, he tells Desmond about Radzinski, put a shotgun in his mouth while Kelvin was asleep, that he buried him, Desmond's been there 2 years, he wants to go outside, Desmond was kicked out of the Army because he couldn't follow orders, Kelvin says men followed his orders, that Desmond isn't going outside into the jungle. 52. "How do you even remember where you left off from?" Desmond "Slowly, Des. Very, very slowly. You should have seen Radzinski do this. He had a photographic memory. I mean, this whole baby was his idea." Kelvin "Yeah, right, Radzinsky. Radzinski figured out how to fake a lockdown. Radzinski created this great invisible map. More and more tales about your former partner. Yet for some reason, you never want to tell me what bloody well happened to him." Desmond
53. Charlie questions whether the button is a joke, but Eko shows Charlie the magnet by throwing his belt at it, he asks if that's a joke.
54. Eko lights the fuse for the dynamite and hides behind a wall, Charlie runs away as a fire ball chases him from behind.
55. Desmond wakes, alarm is going off, he pushes the button, he can't find Kelvin, he hears him, he's underground, below the computer room, with a key, says he couldn't do it, the only other way out, a failsafe, Desmond asks about the wall, the incident, Kelvin says electromagnetism, geologically unique, the incident was that there was a leak, the charge builds up and the button discharges it before it gets too big. 56. "Here's the real question, Desmundo—do you have the courage to take your finger out of the dam and blow the whole thing up, instead?" Kelvin
57. Charlie and Eko appear to be dead from the explosion, Locke doesn't seem to care.
58. "Is the reason you're letting that clock there run all the way down to the very last tick—is it because you need to look down the barrel of a gun to find out what you really believe, John?" Desmond "I looked down the barrel of the gun and I believed. I thought it was my destiny to get into this place. And someone died—a kid. Because he was stupid enough to believe that I knew what I was talking about. And the night that he died for nothing, I was sitting right up there, all alone, beating my hand bloody against that stupid door—screaming to the heavens asking what I should do. And then a light went on. I thought it was a sign. But it wasn't a sign. Probably just you going to the bathroom." Locke
59. Sayid investigates the Others camp that Michael described, but it's deserted, empty huts, the hatch that Michael told them about is fake.
60. Sawyer, Jack, Kate, Hurley and Michael arrive upon a pile of capsules from the pneumatic tube, with notebooks in them, all filed up, the map that Locke drew. From Lostpedia
61. "0400: S.R. moves ping-pong table again. 0415: takes a shower." Kate
62. They see the signal fire that Sayid lit by the shore, they hear whispers, voices, "Elizabeth" and "Michael," they're shot with darts, taken by the Others.
63. Desmond asks Locke about the other station he found, he tells about psychological station, 2 men observing, notebooks and pneumatic tubes, shows him the printout from the computer there, Desmond wonders if he got it backwards, if the men in The Pearl are the experiment. From Lostpedia
64. Kelvin is going out into the jungle in his hazmat suit, he says goodbye, but Desmond gets suspicious, sees a tear in his hazmat suit, then follows him. Kelvin takes off his mask outside, goes to Desmond's sailboat, knows Desmond followed him, says he was a spook for 10 years, that he knows when someone is following him, he says he's fixing that boat, that Desmond can come with him, that maybe the button isn't even real, Desmond questions why he lied to him, why he went on about damns, electromagnets and failsafes, Kelvin says he needed someone to save the world after he left, Desmond gets angry and attacks Kelvin, accidentally hits his head on the rocks and dies, Desmond takes the failsafe key from around his neck, runs back to the hatch, everything is shaking, the alarm is going off, there is a system failure, Desmond tries to type in numbers but to no avail, there are hieroglyphs on the countdown clock, eventually it works and everything is reset, fixed, back to normal. Desmond studies the printout from The Pearl station, numbers and the word accepted repeated many times, then he finds 922044:16 and SYSTEM FAILURE written many times over, he asks Locke when he got there, when his plane crashed, Locke says 60-65 days ago, September 22, and it's the same day that Kelvin died and the button wasn't pushed, there was a system failure. 66. "I think I crashed your plane." Desmond
67. The Others take Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and Michael to the Pala Ferry, Kate tells Mr. Friendly that she knows his beard is fake, he then takes it off, Ms. Klugh calls him Tom, a boat arrives with the man from the hatch, "Henry Gale," Ben. From Lostpedia
68. Charlie and Eko wake from unconsciousness from the explosion in the hatch.
69. Desmond tells Locke about the plane crash and the button, that they need to push it, but Locke smashes the computer, Desmond opens the blast doors.
70. "On that day, those numbers turned to hieroglyphics. And when the last one came down this whole place started to shake. And that screen? That screen filled up with "system failure," [pointing to the printout] System Failure. And I know what they are. 92204—September the 22nd, 2004, the day your planed crashed. It's real! It's all bloody real! Now, push the damn button!" Desmond
71. "You killed us. You killed us all." Desmond "No, I just saved us all." Locke
72. Desmond gets the failsafe key in his book, Our Mutual Friend.
73. The same night that Locke banged on the hatch door, when Boone died, Desmond contemplated suicide, he opens his book and finds a letter from Penny. From Lostpedia
74. "Dearest Des, I am writing this letter to you as you leave for prison. And I've hidden in the one place you would turn to in a moment of great desperation. I know you go away with the weight of what happened on your shoulders. And I know the only person who can ever take it off is you. Please don't give up, Des. Because all we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us. And you have her. I will wait for you. Always. I love you, Pen."
75. Desmond is very upset because he thinks the world is gone, he throws things in the hatch, he hears Locke bang on the door, he sees it as a sign, it gives him hope that the world is still out there, he puts the light on. From Lostpedia
76. Desmond gets the failsafe key, tells Locke he heard him 3 days before they met.
77. "3 days before you came down here, before we met, I heard a banging on the Hatch door, shouting. But it was you, John, wasn't it? You said there isn't any purpose—there's no such thing as fate. But you saved my life, brotha, so that I could save yours." Desmond
78. The alarm is going off, the button doesn't get pushed, there is another system failure, the timer flips to hieroglyphs.
79. "I'm going to blow the dam, John. [the timer starts flipping to the hieroglyphs] I'm sorry for whatever happened that made you stop believing. But it's all real. Now I've got to go and make it all go away. I'll see you in another life, brotha." Desmond
80. The hatch is imploding, the countdown clock implodes, a magnetic force is drawing everything to the wall, Eko wakes up, Locke realizes his mistake, that Desmond was right.
81. "I was wrong." Locke frighteningly admits to Mr. Eko that it was a mistake. From Lostpedia
82. Desmond uses the failsafe key, he thinks of what Penny said in her letter.
83. "I love you, Penny." Desmond gives the sign of the cross and turns the key.
84. There is white noise, a bright light, shaking, happening all over the island, at the beach camp, Pala Ferry, everywhere, then everything fades. From Lostpedia
85. An object falls from the sky, the quarantine door from the hatch almost hits Claire and Bernard as they narrowly escape, Charlie returns to camp, appears to have lost his hearing. From Lostpedia
86. Benry, is the leader of the Others, he gives Michael the boat, says he's not happy with the arrangement, says they got more than they bargained for when Walt joined them, but he says that Michael set him free, living up to his word, so they will live up to theirs, he tells Michael to follow a compass bearing of 325, that if he does that exactly, they will find rescue. Michael asks how he knows he won't tell people about where he was, but Benry says that he won't because of what he did, that once he leaves, he'll never be able to get back there, Michael says that he was promised they wouldn't hurt his friends, that's the deal.
87. "Who are you people?" Michael "We're the good guys, Michael." Ben
88. He tells Michael that Walt is on the boat, they are reunited.
89. The Others let Hurley go, Ms. Klugh tells him that his job is to tell everyone else to never come back there, Michael and Walt leave the island. From Lostpedia
90. Claire asks Charlie about what happened in the hatch, he says nothing, they kiss.
91. Snow hut, station, blizzard, in an Arctic place, 2 men speaking Portuguese, a computer, light going off, 7418880 Electromagnetic Anomaly. From Lostpedia
92. "That's it, isn't it? We missed it again."
93. But they didn't miss it, they review protocol. They make a phone call. From Lostpedia
94. They call Penelope Widmore, there is the same photograph of her and Desmond on the bedside table, the same one that Desmond has on the island.

4. Arzt teaches about dynamite and nitroglycerin and then explodes handling the dynamite.
5. Jin meets man in airport bathroom, speaks Korean, works for Mr. Paik, says he knows that Jin was running away, that he must do his job and return or he will lose Sun. From Lostpedia
6. "How does a place this big never get discovered?" Michael

8. Claire notices scratches on Rousseau. "When did I do that? Why did I scratch you?"

Notes:

1. We find out in a later episode that Claire scratched Rousseau when she saved her from the others.
2. Locke expresses that they should take twice the amount of dynamite they need in case one blows up, a failsafe.
3. Claire finally names the baby.
4. Jack needs to stop trying to control everything always.
5. Walt being taken on the raft is one of the first times I've been completely fooled on this show. I didn't see it coming at all.
6. Upon initial reaction, I thought the others were pirates. Sometimes I still do.
