Episode Analysis of 1.07 "The Moth"

My LOST re-watch and episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that is LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. This episode was written by Jennifer Johnson and Paul Dini, and directed by Jack Bender. It originally aired on November 3rd, 2004.

This is a Charlie Pace flashback-centric episode.

We begin in the caves, where Charlie Pace plays his guitar to try to distract himself from the fact that he's going through extreme drug withdrawals. He is sweaty and shaking. He looks absolutely awful.

Initial Reaction to "Recon"

Some loved it; some hated it. I was very entertained. Of course, there was some predictability and not a whole lot happened. I agree with that. When you invest yourself so thoroughly into a television show for six years, you get to know the people that create and write much better than you think. As much as we've (the fans) put ourselves into this show, they've invested way more than we can even imagine. The show, in a way, becomes a dialogue between the creators and the fans. We get to know eachother through the screen. I think we've become so accustomed to the craziness and confusion that is LOST that we almost try too hard to anticipate their every move at this point. In many ways, I think, especially in this final season, that they're trying to keep us on your toes, though in much subtler ways that they have before. Relax people. It's building. LOST has always been a character story. If this is the story that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse wanted to tell, then regardless of if I like it or not, I respect that. I'm not going to set myself up for failure. I have loved this show for six years, and if the ending isn't every single thing that I had hoped and theorized it would be in those six years, I'm not going to stop loving it because of that. Perhaps, I will be a bit disappointed. That's a strong possibility. I expect they won't answer every question that I want answered. I'm okay with that. What LOST changed about television is that it never stops making you think, and I wouldn't expect any less if LOST left me thinking for the rest of my life. 1. Karl, running through the jungle, gets to the shore, takes a canoe, going somewhere.

7. "Hey, look on the bright side. You're not really dead, right?" Naomi "Yeah, right." Charlie
8. Jack and Juliet handling the dynamite, Rousseau handling the wiring, says they need more to trigger it from a safe distance, Jack says he can get people to strip the plane wreckage, Rousseau says they can be ready by tomorrow night.
9. Sayid wants to talk to Jack about the satellite phone, trying to get off the island, says the satellite phone can't transmit, Rousseau's distress signal overriding the frequency, wants to go to the radio tower, switch off the message, call for help, Naomi's boat 18 miles off shore, Juliet says no, Ben using a DHARMA station to block all the signals off the island, The Looking Glass, an underwater hatch, but Juliet says she had no idea where it is, but Sayid he knows where it is.
10. Claire wonders if they're coming for Aaron again, Charlie says he will protect her, Desmond asks to have a word with Charlie.
11. Desmond tells Charlie he saw Claire and the baby getting into a helicopter that lifts off, leaves the island, if Charlie doesn't die, none of it will happen.

The diagram shows that The Looking Glass is connected to the Island by a cable. I feel sure that this is the very same cable down the beach which runs into the ocean. Charlie and Desmond arrive at The Looking Glass, Charlie tells Desmond to give Claire his Greatest Hits, Desmond says he'll go, that maybe he keeps seeing Charlie die because he's supposed to take his place, Charlie asks what about his girl, but Desmond says what about his, that he might be luckier, to keep his memories to himself, but Charlie knocks Desmond out, puts Greatest Hits in his pocket, not supposed to take his place.
46. "I want you to give this to Claire for me." Charlie "What is it?" Desmond "It's the five best moments of my sorry excuse for a life. My greatest hits. You know, memories. They're all I've got." Charlie

Notes:

1. Uh, Jack, probably not a good idea to blow a tree up just to make a point, and doing so probably isn't the most intelligent thing to do, considering the Others might hear you, plus you're wasting dynamite, Jackass.
2. When Charlie's father is teaching him how to swim, you can hear someone in the background clearly say, "Desmond, come on!"
3. In White Rabbit, Charlie exclaimed, "I don't swim! I don't swim!"
4. I love this episode, the acting, the music, the direction, everything about it, so glad Charlie's character was vindicated and I started to like him again.
5. The shot of the shoe is the saddest thing ever.

2.12 Fire + Water

1. Charlie's dream, painting, The Baptism Of Christ, Charlie as a child wearing bunny slippers, his mom gives him a piano, his dad disapproves of his music career. He is a butcher.
2. "You're special, love. Some day, you're going to get us out of here. All of us." Megan

6. Liam's daughter in the hospital, Karen named her Megan, after Charlie and Liam's mother. Charlie lies and says Liam is on his way.

8. Charlie's dream, like the painting, guitar, baby crying, Aaron's cradle in the ocean, Charlie goes in to save him, he can swim now. Claire and his mother tell him "You have to save the baby, Charlie." Beachcraft, doves, Hurley as John the Baptist asks what he is doing, which causes Charlie to snap out of his dream.

11. Hurley and Libby do laundry in the hatch. Libby questions why the washer and dryer are newer than everything else in there. Hurley says he knows her from somewhere. Libby says that Hurley stepped on her foot on the plane.
12. Charlie tells Eko about his dreams, flying doves, Claire and his mom say to save the baby. Eko is marking trees.
13. Charlie tells Claire that Aaron is in danger, that he has to be baptized.
14. Charlie and Liam write a song about two brothers. Karen kicked Liam out for dropping Megan.
15. Locke follows Charlie to his stash, takes it from him. From Lostpedia
16. "You said everything happens for a reason. This island tests us. That's what this is, John, a test. This is my test. That's why these are here." Charlie
17. Liam sells Charlie's piano, been clean for 2 days, quits the band. He's going to Sydney for a job and so he can go to rehab and be with his family.
18. "What about my family?" Charlie asks Liam, while you can see the London Underground in the background.
19. Charlie starts fire on the beach camp, takes the baby, Locke beats him up.
20. Charlie tells Jack that he started the fire while Jack repairs his wounds.
21. Claire asks Eko about baptism, he baptizes the both of them.
22. Locke changes the combination to the armory, put the Virgin Mary statues inside.

1. What was the significance of Charlie's dream? Was it really to baptize Aaron or is he in greater danger?
2. Why are the washer and dryer newer than everything else in the hatch?
3. Did Hurley really step on Libby's foot? How does he really know her?
4. Was Charlie doing drugs?
5. Why is Charlie's relationship with his father painted so negatively in this episode?
6. Is Mrs. Pace dead?
7. Did Charlie really know how to swim or was it just the dream?

Notes:

1. I like the dream sequence in this episode, but otherwise it's pretty disappointing. I can see how a lot of people dropped the show during Season 2. It definitely isn't my favorite, but I enjoy it a lot more now going back and watching than I did when it aired.
2. The scene with Ana Lucia and Jack coming out of the jungle is purely there to show us that they're talking about raising an army, which is pure crap because they never do anything with it.
3. It is impossible for Hurley to have stepped on Libby's foot considering he was in the front of the plane and she was in the back. How did she know he was the last one on the plane? How could she have known he was sweaty and had headphones, especially considering he didn't put his headphones on until the plane took off?
4. Claire is allowed to be crazy and annoying in this episode. However, Locke has no excuses.

1.15 Homecoming

1. Claire comes back and doesn't know who anyone is.
2. "We were all on that plane. It crashed here, on this island. That was almost a month ago." Jack, to Claire.
3. "Carpe Diem, my friend." Charlie
4. You All Everybody is playing on the jukebox in the bar. From Lost Hatch
5. "I want her back. You bring her here, or I'm going to kill one of them." Ethan attacks Charlie in the jungle when he's talking to Jin. Ethan is freakishly strong again. From Lostpedia

8. Charlie says that Drive Shaft is on a hiatus. Liam had a daughter, it's been a year since they were together.
9. Ethan kills Scott. Scott's neck was broken, both of his arms, and all his fingers. From Lostpedia

11. Scott Jackson, internet company, Santa Cruise. He won a sales prize, two week Australian vacation.
12. Charlie tells Tommy he doesn't think Liam is coming back.
13. Charlie steals from Lucy to buy drugs, but he takes a job from her dad anyway.
14. The copier that Charlie is trying to sell is a C815.
15. Charlie kills Ethan, shoots the gun 6 times and hits him 4 times in the chest. From Lostpedia

6. Did Ethan do something to Claire to make her not remember anything?

2. The actor that plays Steve is the one that dies, but they say it's Scott.

1.07 The Moth

1. Locke tells Charlie that he'll let him ask for his drugs 3 times.

Notes:

1. Jack tells Sayid that they'll be closer to getting off the island if they figure out where the transceiver signal is coming from. This, ultimately, is what gets them off the island three seasons later.
2. This is the first time we hear You All Everybody.
3. Kate says Sawyer doesn't want to leave because he has nothing to go back for. She later finds out that he does have something to go back for, but he ends up staying and sacrificing himself.
4. This is the first time Charlie does drugs.
5. We later find out that it is Locke that knocks Sayid out. Surprise, surprise.
6. Charlie sets himself free, and throws his drugs into the fire.
