Analysis of Epilogue, "The New Man in Charge"

Wow. It's been a while since I've done this. I'm a little rusty. I've been writing a post about the Finale, "The End" and my thoughts on the entire series, and the aftermath of everything for a few months now, but I still haven't even come close to finishing all of my thoughts and theories on the whole matter, so that's going to have to wait for bit. So, before I finished doing all of that, I figured I'd brush up on some LOST because I've been thinking about it again a lot lately.

I haven't bought the LOST Season Six DVD Set as of yet, and I have the first Five Seasons already, so I'll be holding off from buying the LOST Complete Collection Box Set for at least a little while, but I had a chance to watch  the 12-Minute Epilogue, titled "The New Man in Charge," online a few weeks ago when it was leaked, and now that the DVD has finally come out, I figured I'd do some writing about it. This is the last new footage that I will probably ever write about LOST, so that's kind of sad. Well, that is unless they come out with something new, which I could see ABC/Disney doing, so maybe that's a lie. 

After I finish this, and my post about the Finale and everything else, I'm going to be dong a re-watch of Season Six, in the same style that I've done Seasons before, and then a re-watch and analysis of the entire Series, which will be different than everything else I've done. I plan to focus on analyzing each episode with the knowledge of having watched the entire Series, which should be interesting and a lot of fun. I really want to go back and reflect on everything, because I feel like then, and only then, will this entire experience come to an end. But, let's be realistic, this whole thing is never going to be over for me. I'm going to be watching and thinking about LOST for the rest of my damn life, so deal with it. It comes with the territory now.

Series Finale, Initial Reaction to "The End"

It has taken me a long time to finally complete this post. I swear to Duct Tape that I literally spent at least 80 hours working on this damn post. Between taking notes from watching the episode, to typing them all out, to organizing all my thoughts in a coherent manner.. It has taken forever. But, I enjoyed it all. Working on this has really helped me to explore and understand the entire episode and how I felt about it.

I hesitate to say that it was everything that I'd hoped it would be, because really, I went into this entire season with a completely open mind, and was just allowing myself to fully enjoy it. With that being said, I could not have imagined "The End" being any better than what it was. The entire episode felt like an homage, a tribute, a love-letter even, to the fans of the show. It was a masterpiece. I had been anticipating this for years, since they announced that LOST would end in 2010, and, in my opinion, they delivered. It was thoughtful. It was heartfelt. It was touching. It made me realize that the past six years of my life were truly a great experience. It made me want to go back and watch the whole damn thing all over again. I fucking loved it. But, I also can understand why some people didn't like it. So, let's discuss all of that, and everything in between, shall we?

Initial Reaction to "Dr. Linus"

Dr. Linus is a doctor? Didn't see that one coming! This episode was pretty awesome, though not as high-paced as I had anticipated. It was a very strong character episode, regardless of the pacing. Well, until the last two seconds when everything is all well and nice and everyone's hugging, and then the cheeriness is all blown to hell when Charles Widmore shows up to the party. Dude always has to ruin everything that's fun. Will he go on a baby killing tour around the island? Well, considering there are no longer any babies on the island at the moment... maybe he'll re-kill Claire's squirrel baby. That thing is the only thing that's more of a mood-killer than Widmore. But, I guess we'll only find out what his deal is in the weeks to come (Though probably not next week because they always like to do that to us. Grrrrr!). Enough chatter, let's get into it, Dr. Linus...

Initial Reaction to "The Substitute"

This was a great episode. It had great story. It had mythology. It had John Locke! This was far better than last week's episode. Again, I still don't think last week's episode was bad by any means, though a whole lot slower, with a lot less dense mythology. It appears as though they're following the format of the episode-centrics from Season One, which is very interesting. Overall, I'm really enjoyed this episode a lot, and would so as far to say that it's my favorite this season so far, although, obviously, there's not much to choose from. I took A LOT of notes on this episode, so let's get into it.

At The Hydra building, in Ben's former office, he's looking for something, opening drawers, he finds a photograph of him and Alex, Locke comes in, asks what's that, Ben says that it's just something sentimental, folds it, puts it in his pocket, Locke says so this is his old office, that he never pictured him leading his people from behind a desk, seems a little corporate, Locke sits at Ben's desk, puts his feet up, Ben asks if there was something that he needed, Locke says that he was hoping they could talk about the elephant in the room, Ben says he's assuming that he's referring to the fact that he killed him, Locke says yeah, Ben says that it was the only way to get him back to the island, along with as many who left as possible, he says you do remember, that's why he left in the first place, to convince them to come back, and he failed, the only way to do that was for him to die, and he understood that, that's why he was about to kill himself, but Ben stopped him, Locke asks if all he had to do was die, then why did he stop him, Ben says that he had critical information that would have died with him, and once he'd given it to him, well he just didn't have time to talk him back into hanging himself, so he took a shortcut, but he's here, he's back, just like the rest of them, he doesn't know where they are exactly yet, but they came, it worked, and that's why he did it, because it was in the best interest of the island, Locke says he was just hoping for an apology, says he's decided to help him, Ben says help him do what, Locke says do what he says he was going to do, be judged, Ben says that's not something he wants to see, Locke says if everything he did was in the best interest of the island, then he's sure the monster will understand, Locke says let's go. On the beach, they uncover some of the outrigger canoes, Caesar comes up, asks Locke what he's doing, he says he's taking a boat, Caesar says where, Lock says over to the main island, Caesar says he doesn't think so, Locke says are these your boats, Caesar says are they yours, Locke says his name is Caesar, that he was under the impression that they were found here, so he's just going to borrow one, he's happy to leave one for him in case he wants to follow us, Caesar says us, asks Ben if he's going with him, Ben says that he didn't really give him a choice, Caesar says he's sorry, but he's calling the shots here, and he says that he's not taking anything, what he's going to do is sit down and tell him how he knows so much about this island, my friend, Locke hits the sand out of his shoes, says Caesar is in the habit of calling people friend, but he doesn't think he means it, Caesar says to step away from the boat, Locke says no, that he's taking the boat, and he's going to let him, Caesar says he's not taking anything, goes to grab his gun, Ben asks if he's looking for this, takes his gun out, shoots Caesar, tells the others that this gentleman and I are taking a boat, asks if anyone else has a problem with that, they back off, Ben throws the gun to Locke, says to consider that his apology. Locke and Ben paddling the outrigger canoe, they dock at the Pala Ferry, Ben says home sweet home, Locke notices another outrigger there, he says that it looks like they're not the first ones who decided to tie up there, Ben says that would be Sun and Lapidus, he says that he showed them where the boats were, and Sun thanked him by smashing him on the head with a paddle, Locke sits on the dock to put his shoes back on, Locke asks Ben if she's the one that hurt his arm, that he noticed he was favoring it on the way over, Ben says no, someone else hurt his arm, Locke says that he just makes friends everywhere he goes, doesn't he, Ben says that he's found that sometimes friends could be significantly more dangerous that enemies, Locke asks if that's why he shot an unarmed man in the chest, Ben says that the man was unarmed because he'd stolen his gun that he was going to use to kill him, that he couldn't let that happen, he says you're welcome, Locke asks if they're going to his old house, aren't they, Ben says yes, it's the only place he can summon it, the monster, and once it arrives he'll either be forgiven or he won't, Locke says he thinks he's lying, Ben says lying about what, Locke says that he wants to be judged for leaving the island and coming back because it's against the rules, but he doesn't think that Ben cares about rules, Ben asks then what does he want to be judged for, Locke says for killing his daughter, Ben is surprised. Locke inside, they all look at him, Sun says what he's saying, it's impossible, Locke says but here he is, he doesn't know how, doesn't know why, but he's sure there's a very good reason for it, Frank says as long as the dead guy says there's a reason, he guesses everything is going to be peachy, and forget about the fact that the rest of their people are supposedly 30 years ago, now the only ones there to help them are a murderer and a guy that can't seem to remember how he got out of a coffin, he tells Sun, please, let's just go back to plane and see if he can fix the radio and get some help, Locke says if she leaves with him, she'll never find her husband again, that he's all the help she needs, Sun asks if he's saying he knows how to find them, how to find Jin, Locke says that he has some ideas, Frank says he's sorry to say, but he's leaving with or without her, Sun says that if there's any chance of finding her husband, then she has to stay, Frank says alright, for God's sake, to watch her back, he leaves, Sun says alright, how do they find Jin, Locke says that Ben has something to do first, isn't that right Ben, Ben says yes John that's right, Locke says he better get to it then.
25. "What you're saying, it's... impossible." Sun "But here I am. I don't know how, I don't know why, but I'm sure there's a very good reason for it." Locke

Ben pulls out his bookcase, goes into the secret room, moves the clothes rack, opens the secret door, pushes the hieroglyphs door open, lights a match, then a lantern, he goes down a dark staircase, crawls through a tunnel, into a room, there is a hole filled with water, Ben unclogs the hole, flushes the water down the hole, he says that he'll be outside, he leaves the underground room.

At Ben's house, Sun waits outside, Ben comes out, asks where did John go, Sun says that he said he had something to do, Ben asks did he say what it was, Sun says no, she didn't ask, Sun says that Jack must've lied, Ben says excuse me, Sun says about Locke being dead, that's the only explanation, Ben says that Jack didn't lie, John was dead, Sun says just because he was in a coffin, doesn't mean that he couldn't have faked his death, Ben says to trust him, he's sure, Sun says so he knew this would happen to Locke if they brought him back here, Ben says he had no idea it would happen, that he's seen the island do miraculous things, he's seen it heal the sick, but never once has it done anything like this, dead is dead, you don't get to come back from that, not even here, so the fact that John Locke is walking around this island, scares the living hell out of him, they hear something rustling around in the jungle, Ben says she may want to go inside, Sun asks why, Ben says because what's about to come out of that jungle, is something that he can't control, Sun gets up, they hear something else, and it's Locke who comes out of the jungle, he asks any luck, Ben says it hasn't shown up yet, Locke says last time they didn't have to wait this long, Ben says it's not a train, it doesn't run on a schedule, Locke says if it's not going to go to them, then he guesses they'll have to go to it, Ben says that it doesn't work that way, he only knows how to summon it, he doesn't know where it actually is, Locke says that he does.
31. "So you knew this would happen to Locke if we brought him back here?" Sun "Sun, I had no idea it would happen. I've seen this Island do miraculous things. 33. Locke and Sun, Locke says that it's weird for him too, Sun says excuse me, Locke says he realizes how strange this all is, him here, but I assures you, Sun, he's the same man he's always been, Ben comes out, Locke asks are you ready, Ben says to lead the way.
34. "It's weird for me, too." Locke "Excuse me?" Sun "I realize how strange this all is--me, here. But I assure you, Sun, I'm the same man I've always been. Are you ready?" Locke "Lead the way." Ben

At the Long Beach Marina, Ben calls Charles Widmore, he asks how he got this number, Ben says that it doesn't matter, but what matters is, he's going back to the island today, Widmore says that the island won't let him come back, to trust him, he says that he spent almost 20 years trying to get back to the island, Ben says well, where he failed, he's going to succeed, but just as soon as he does one thing, Widmore asks and what's that, Ben says kill your daughter, he says that, in fact, he's looking at Our Mutual Friend right now, Widmore says he doesn't know what he's talking about, Ben says it's the name of the boat that Penny is on, Widmore says don't you dare, Ben says goodbye, Charles. Ben at the Long Beach Marina, he walks down the dock, sees Penny on Our Mutual Friend, takes his gun out, but Desmond is unloading groceries form the car behind Ben, and sees him, he says hey what are you doing here, Ben turns around, and shoots him, Desmond, Penny calls, Ben points his gun at her, he says don't move, not another word, he says hello Penelope, my name is Benjamin Linus, that he's sorry she's caught up in this, but her father, Penny says that her father and her have absolutely no relationship whatsoever, Ben says your father is a really terrible human being, and that he's responsible for the killing of his daughter, that's why he's there, little Charlie calls mommy, Penny yells for him to go back inside, she begs Ben, says please, whatever you do, don't hurt my son, Charlie comes out, Penny yells for Charlie to go inside, Ben sees little Charlie, and begins to lower his gun, but Desmond runs up from behind and tackles him, beats the crap out of him, throws him in the water, Ben is a bloody mess.

1. Jin in the jungle, someone radios his walkie, asks are you there, if he can hear him, Jin wakes up from being knocked out by Sayid, talks on his walkie, it's Phil, who asks where has he been, Phil says that the hostile escaped, that they're searching in the East grid, Jin says that he's heading North, Phil asks how he knows that, Jin says because he attacked him, Phil asks where are you, Jin sees Ben's body, Ben says to please help him, Jin picks him up, puts him in the DHARMA van, drives away. Horace gathers everyone to explain the situation, he says to listen up, he says we don't know yet if another attack is coming, to take their security assignments, and make sure they're in contact with their team leaders, he says that La Fleur has search parties out, but the hostile has a jump on them, Hurley asks Jack if he's talking about Sayid, Jack asks if he was locked up, how he could start the fire, Horace says that someone else torched the van, gave him help, since the security cameras didn't catch any of the hostiles crossing the perimeter, he says it was one of them, they'll have a full report on cleanup.
3. "We don't know yet if another attack is coming. So everybody needs to be ready for your security assignments. Make sure you're in contact with your team leaders. Kate is driving, listening to Patsy Cline, she drives up to a house, parks n the driveway, takes Aaron out of the backseat, he's still a baby, only a few months old, Kate sings him Catch A Falling Star, she  goes up to the house, rings the doorbell, Cassidy Phillips answers, she's surprised to see her, says she saw Kate on the news, told her friends she knows that woman, Kate introduces her to Aaron, Cassidy says that she survived a plane crash, that's amazing, tells Kate that she never thought she'd see her again, asks what she's doing there, Kate tells Cassidy that Sawyer sent her there. Kate gives Cassidy an envelope filled with money, Cassidy says Sawyer, that son of a bitch is still alive, Kate says that he was when she left, Cassidy says so he asked her to go there and give her an envelope full of money, Kate says that he told her where to find her, and said to take care of Clementine, his daughter, Cassidy says she's asleep in her crib right now, doesn't want to wake her up, Kate says she shouldn't have bothered her, Cassidy says she could've sent it, asks why'd she tell her all of this, why did she trust her, Kate says that she thought her daughter had a right to know that her father cared about her, Cassidy asks why he didn't come back with them, Kate says that the helicopter they were on was running out of gas, so he jumped, so that they could make it to the boat, Cassidy says what a coward, Kate says he was trying to do the right thing, Cassidy says he was trying to get away from her, that she told him he had a daughter, and he never so much as lifted a finger to call her, so now she's supposed to think he's a hero because he told her to come there, she says she bets the money isn't even his, she asks is it, Kate says they gave a settlement after the crash, and she didn't need it all, Cassidy says she doesn't have to explain it, that she has the same look on her face that she had when Sawyer ditched her, Cassidy says that all she has for her is sympathy, she asks Kate is it his, her son, is it Sawyer's, Kate says no, she was pregnant before she met him, Cassidy says that's not her baby, she just told her that her and her friends cooked a whole story for the world about what happened on the island, she says that Kate tells her the truth about that, asks why is she lying about him, Kate says because she has to.
8. "Why didn't he come back with the rest of you?" Cassidy "The helicopter that we were on was running out of gas, so he jumped so that we could make it to the boat." Kate "What a coward." Cassidy "He was trying to do the right thing." Kate "He was trying to get away from you. I told him he had a daughter. He never so much as lifted a finger to try to call her. At the Security station, Sawyer looks at the monitors, Kate comes in, asks what happened, Sawyer asks what she's doing there, Kate says that it's Ben, the kid that was shot was Ben, Sawyer says to keep her mouth shut and don't draw any attention to herself, to leave, he doesn't want her around here, Kate says she just wants to know what's going on, Horace comes in, asks what she's doing there, La Fleur says Kate, that she's new at the Motor Pool, he was just seeing if she saw anything suspicious but she didn't, Horace asks if he checked out the hostile's cell yet, La Fleur says he's been too busy trying to keep the town from burning down, they look at the cell, which has keys still in the cell door, they say he didn't break out, that someone let him out, La Fleur says they're janitor's keys, Horace says they only have three janitors, Roger, Willie and that new guy, that he just met him, his name is Jack, La Fleur says that he just brought him in on the sub, he will go talk to him, asks Miles to come with him, Miles says sure, boss.
11. Sawyer tells Miles to find Jack, Hurley and Kate, to put them in a house and sit on them, he doesn't want them talking to anyone, doesn't want this thing to spin out of control, Miles says okay.
12. La Fleur goes to the Infirmary, Roger is waiting there, he asks who did this, La Fleur says he's trying to figure that out, that he's going to talk to Juliet, asks Roger for his keys, but he doesn't have them, says he must have left them at home, La Fleur says it's okay, he goes inside.
13. Juliet is trying to save Ben, but she can't stop the hemorrhaging, Sawyer asks where's the doctor that's supposed to be there, Juliet says he's at The Looking Glass station until Friday, Juliet says she can't fix it, that someone needs to get in there, find the damage, he needs a real surgeon.
14. "No, it's not all right. Someone needs to get in there who can find the damage that bullet did and fix it. [Whispers] He needs a real surgeon." Juliet
15. Miles with gun, Jack says he's telling him they're under house arrest, Miles says they're all free to leave whenever they want, but he'll shoot them in the leg, Jack asks and who's idea is this, Kate says that Sawyer's just doing his job, Hurley looks at his hand, says he's trying to see if he's disappearing, like Back to the Future, he says they came back in time to the island, that it can change stuff, he says that if little Ben dies, then he can't grow up to be big Ben, which means they don't come back to the island, therefore, they don't exist, Miles says that he's an idiot, that it doesn't work like that, you can't change anything, that his maniac, Iraqi buddy shot Linus, but it always happened, they just never experienced how it all turns out, Hurley says it's confusing, Miles says the good news is that Linus didn't die, which means the kid can't either, Kate says it didn't look like that, Miles says if he's wrong then they all stop existing, and then it doesn't matter. 18. "Juliet said the kid's losing blood, and we ain't gone none to put back in him. So, we need you to show us where he sprung a leak." Sawyer

Kate asks Jack what he's doing, Jack says he's making a sandwich, Kate says he's just a boy, that they can't just let him die, Jack says she heard Miles, they can't change what happens, Kate says unless he's the one that's supposed to save him, Jack says that 30 years from now, that boy is going to be a man, that locks him in a cage because he needs surgery, and then she's going to come in and beg him to operate on him because he's threatening to murder Sawyer, he already said this once, he already saved Ben's life for her, and he's not going to do it again, Kate says it's their fault, that they brought Sayid back, they caused this, Jack says did she ever think that maybe the island just wants to fix things itself, that maybe he was just getting in the way, Kate says she doesn't like the new him, that she liked the old him, who wouldn't just sit around and wait for things to happen, Jack says she didn't like the old him, Kate leaves.
20. "You heard Miles. We can't change what's already happened. This has nothing to do with me." Jack "Unless you're the one who's supposed to save him." Kate "30 years from now, that boy's gonna be a man...that locks me in a cage because he needs surgery. And then you're gonna come in and you're gonna beg me to operate on him because he's threatening to murder Sawyer. I've already done this once. [scoffs] I've already saved Benjamin Linus, and I did it for you, Kate. I don't need to do it again." Jack "This is our fault. We brought Sayid back. We caused this." Kate "You know, when we were here before, I spent all of my time trying to fix things. But...did you ever think that maybe the island just wants to fix things itself? And maybe I was just...getting' in the way?" Jack "You know, I don't like the new you. I liked the old you, who wouldn't just sit around and wait for things to happen." Juliet is trying to help Ben, Kate comes into the Infirmary, the nurse tells Juliet that she said Ben needed blood, and Kate's a universal donor, Juliet says that James told her that Jack wouldn't help, but didn't say why, Kate says if she understood why Jack does what he does, she wouldn't be there, Juliet asks if off island something happened with them, Kate says they were engaged, does that count, Roger comes into the Infirmary while Kate is giving blood, he asks what's going on, Juliet says Kate is giving fresh blood so they can transfuse Ben, Roger refuses to leave, so Kate says Juliet can check on Ben, and Roger will keep her company to make sure she doesn't pass out, Juliet says okay, Roger thanks Kate, Roger says Ben stole his keys, La Fleur asked him for his keys, that he doesn't ask any questions that he doesn't know the answers to, which means Ben stole his keys to bust the hostile out of jail, Kate asks why he would do that, Roger says because of him, asks Kate if she has kids, she says no, Roger says he thought he was going to be the greatest father ever, that he guesses it didn't work out that way, Kate asks what about Ben's mother, if she's still around, Roger says no she's dead, that she died that day he was born, Kate says she's sorry, he says him too, that he tried to do what he thought she'd want him to do, but he guesses a boy just needs his mother, Ben starts choking, going into hypoxic shock, Juliet says to get Roger out of there.
22. "La Fleur asked me where my keys were. That bastard doesn't ask any questions he doesn't know the answers to...which means my son stole my keys so he could bust that animal out of jail." Roger
23. "I thought I was gonna be the greatest father ever. You know? [Whispers] I guess it didn't work out that way." Roger "What about his mother? Is she still around?" Kate "No, she's dead. She died the day he was born." Roger "I'm sorry." Kate "Yeah, me, too. [Sighs] I tried to do what I thought she'd want me to do, but...I guess a boy just needs his mother." Roger

Hurley says to get this straight, all this already happened, Miles says yes, Hurley says so this conversation we're having right now, we already had it, Miles says yes, Hurley asks so what he's going to say next, Miles says he doesn't know, Hurley says then his theory is wrong, Miles says for the thousandth time, the conversation already happened, but not for them, for them, it's happening right now, Hurley says if all this already happened to him, then why doesn't he remember any of it, Miles says because once Ben turned that wheel, time isn't a straight line for us anymore, our experiences in the past and the future, occurred before these experiences right now, Hurley says say that again, Miles says to shoot him, gives Hurley his gun, Hurley says that he can't shoot him, because if he dies on the island in 1977, then he'll never come back on the freighter 30 years from now, Miles says that he can die, because he's already come to the island on the freighter, that any of them can die, because this is their present, Hurley says but he said Ben can't die because he still has to become the leader of the island, Miles says because this is his past, Hurley says when they first captured Ben, and Sayid tortured him, then why wouldn't he remember getting shot by that same guy when he was a kid, Miles says huh, he hadn't thought of that, Hurley says huh.
25. "Let me get this straight. [Miles is pacing.] All this already happened." Hurley "Yes." Miles "So, this conversation we're having right now...we already had it." Hurley "[Claps his hands] Yes!" Miles "Then what am I gonna say next?" Hurley "I don't know. [Shakes his head.]" Miles "Ha'! Then your theory is wrong!" Hurley "For the thousandth time, you dingbat, the conversation already happened, but not for you and me. For you and me, it's happening right now." Miles "Okay, answer me this. If all this already happened to me, then...why don't I remember any of it?" Hurley "Because, once Ben turned that wheel, time isn't a straight line for us anymore. 26. Roger is pacing outside the Infirmary, Kate waits too, Juliet comes out, Roger asks how is he, Juliet says he's stable, Roger asks if he's going to be okay, Juliet says that he has some fresh blood running through him, which is a good thing, Juliet wants Roger to go to medical station, she says there are some supplies there that they don't' have here, Roger says he just wants to say thanks, he knows that she's doing everything she can to save him, Roger says he's going to go, Kate asks Juliet if he's better, Juliet says he's stable, but she can't fix him, Kate says what about the sub, that they can take him somewhere, Juliet says no, that the sub is gone, and it won't be back for a few months, Kate says there has to be something they can do, they have an entire camp, Juliet says there may be something they can do, the others.
27. Juliet and Kate take Ben out of the Infirmary, put him in a DHARMA van, Juliet says okay let's go, but Kate says no, that if she gets caught, she doesn't want to get her in trouble, that if Sawyer knew, he'd kill her, Juliet says he's going to find out that Ben is gone, and she'll have to tell, but she'll give her a head start, as much as she can, Kate leaves.
28. "No, no, no, no. If something goes wrong or we get caught, it doesn't matter for me, but you've got a whole life here. And besides, if Sawyer knew that I got you involved in this, he'd kill me." Kate
29. At the Long Beach Marina, Ben talks to Sun, he says the same person that's going to show them how to get back to the island, Kate asks is that what this is about, Jack says that he wasn't pretending anything, Kate leaves, in the car, Aaron says he's thirsty, wants some milk, Kate goes to grocery store, but now Aaron wants a damn juice box, Kate asks a stock boy what aisle they're on, her phone rings, Kate lets go of Aaron's hand, Jack calling her, Kate looks down and Aaron is gone, Kate frantically looks for him, calls Aaron's name, looks down all the aisles, she runs around the store, at the front, she sees Aaron holding the hand of a woman with blonde hair, who looks just like Claire, but it isn't her, says she found him by the fruit, was going to make an announcement, Kate says thank you to the woman, she comforts Aaron.
30. Kate drives to the pylons, stops there, Ben is choking, says he needs help, to tell his dad he's sorry he stole his keys, Kate says to try not to talk, Sawyer shows up in another DHARMA van, Kate says she knows he's gotta stop her, but that she can't just let that kid die, Sawyer says dammit freckles, that he isn't there to stop her, he's there to help her.
31. "I know you gotta stop me...but I can't just let that kid die." Kate "Damn it, Freckles. I ain't here to stop you. I'm here to help you." Sawyer
32. Kate with Aaron, a few years old, she goes to Cassidy's house, which has a no soliciting sign on it, Clementine says hi Auntie Kate, Kate says hi Clementine, asks for her mom, Clementine says I'll go get her, inside Kate talks to Cassidy, she says they're gong back to the island, Cassidy says why in God's name would they want to do that, Kate says she doesn't know, that Jack says that they weren't supposed to leave, Cassidy says well Jack sounds like a piece of work, that Kate should take a nap, and she'll watch Aaron, Kate says she lost him, that she doesn't know what happened, but she was in the supermarket, and she turned around for one second and he was gone, and the crazy thing is as scared as she was, she wasn't surprised, all she could think was, it's about time, she asks Cassidy why would she feel that way, why would she expect him to be taken, Cassidy says because she took him, Kate says no, Claire was gone, she left him, that she had to take him, that he needed her, Cassidy says that she needed him, that Sawyer broke her heart, she asks Kate how else was she supposed to fix it.
33. "They're going back? To the island? Why in God's name would they wanna do that?" Cassidy "I don't know. Jack says that we weren't supposed to leave." Kate "Well, Jack sounds like a piece of work. You look exhausted. Drink this. Curl up on my bed. Take a nap. [Pours liquid] I'll watch your fella." Cassidy "I lost him." Kate "What?" Cassidy "I don't know what happened. We were in the supermarket, and I turned around for one second, and he was gone. [Wiping away her tears] And, you know, the crazy thing is, is that...[sitting up] as scared as I was...I wasn't surprised. All I could think was, it's about time. Why would I feeel that way? I mean, why would I expect him to be taken?" Kate "Because you took him, Kate." Cassidy "No, I...Claire was gone. I mean, she left him. I had to take him. He needed me." Kate "You needed him. Sawyer broke your heart. How else were you supposed to fix it?" Cassidy

Sawyer punches in the Security code, asks Kate if she figured out how she was going to carry him by herself, Kate says that the line is right there, they're just on the other side, asks Sawyer why he's doing this, why he's helping her, Sawyer says when found out Ben was gone, he asked Juliet the same question, why she's helping Ben, and she said no matter what he's going to grow up to be, it's wrong to let a kid die, so that's why he's doing this, he says that he's doing it for her, they walk through the pylons.
35. "Hey. Why are you doing this? Why are you helping me?" Kate "When I found out Ben was gone, and Juliet told me what you were up to, I asked that exact damn question. Why are you helping Ben? And she said...no matter what he's gonna grow up to be, it's wrong to let a kid die. So...that's why I'm doing this. I'm doing it for her." Sawyer

Juliet goes into the house, she asks Miles and Hurley where's Jack, they say in the shower, Juliet says she just needs to talk to him, if they mind giving them some privacy, Hurley and Miles leave, Miles says to ask him more questions about time travel, Jack taking a shower, Juliet busts in, waiting for him when he gets out, she says she needed him, that kid was bleeding out, he's a surgeon and she needed him, Jack says that kid is Ben, Juliet says that it's not Ben yet, Juliet says that he made it clear he wasn't interested, and it's up to Kate and Sawyer now, they're helping him, that she doesn't need his help now, Jack says he came back there because he was trying to save them, Juliet says they didn't need saving, they've been fine for three years, she says that he came back for him, to at least give the courtesy of telling her why, Jack says he came back because he was supposed to, Juliet asks supposed to do what, Jack says he doesn't know yet, Juliet says that he better figure it out, she leaves.

Sawyer comes into the kitchen, which has bacon burning on the stove, Juliet looking out the window, Sawyer asks what's on the TV, Jack and Kate are outside the window, Juliet asks if it's over, she says isn't it, this, us, playing house, all of it, says they never actually thought they'd come back, Sawyer says it hasn't changed anything, Juliet asks what if Sayid says something, Sawyer says he won't, he says he has this under control, there's a knock at the door.
10. Horace says he just spoke to the prisoner, that they have a problem, La Fleur asks why, what did he say, Horace says that he said nothing, which is what worries him, he needs him to tell why he violated the truce, he's going to have to have Oldham do his thing on him La Fleur says that psychopath, no way, Horace says that it's his only choice, La Fleur says to let him have a go at him, he'll talk to him.
11. Security station, La Fleur tells Phil to take his lunch, Phil asks if he's going back there alone, La Fleur tells him to leave, he asks Sayid how he's doing, Sayid says that a 12 year old Ben Linus brought him a chicken salad sandwich, asks how does he think he's doing, Sayid asks how he could live with him here, Sawyer says he doesn't have a choice, Sayid says is that so, Sawyer says to see how you feel after three years of living in the 70s, that it's lucky for him, he spent that time getting in a position to save his ass, he says sorry to Sayid, then hits him, he says he's going to tell them that he got a confession, he needs them to believe that he didn't get it easily, Sayid will say he was trying to defect, that he'll offer intel in exchange for living with them, Sayid asks why in God's name would he want to do that, Sawyer asks what the hell else he's supposed to do with that, Sayid says to let him go, asks him why not, Sawyer says these people trust him, either he cooperates and joins the party, or he's on his own, Sayid says then he guesses he's on his own.

Roger Linus cleaning up Security station, talks to Sayid, he says that he can't figure out how the hell he got caught, that his people are supposed to be smart, and how dumb is he that he got captured by these idiots, Sayid says and yet he's the one mopping up after them, Roger says he'll see how cute he is once Oldham gets done with him, Ben comes in with food, sees his dad there, says he was bringing him a sandwich, Roger says he's never made a sandwich in his life, Ben says he made one for himself, Roger grabs him, hurts him, Ben says he made sandwich for him, Roger asks who told him, Ben says he just thought, Roger tells him to go home, that he'll tell him what to think.
15. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic--Sayid working on houses, Ben shows up, Sayid asks how he found him, Ben says he looked, Sayid asks what he wants, Ben says that John Locke is dead, that he thinks he was murdered, Sayid asks why anyone would kill him, Ben says that he'd say it was retribution for the work they did, so then Sayid is in danger, if he can find him, so can the people who found Locke, just like they're watching Hugo, he says that a man in a Sedan has been there all week, just waiting, presumably for Sayid or him to show their faces, Ben says that's why he's there, Sayid says he actually came all this way to suggest that he kill this man, Ben asks if he doesn't want to, Sayid says what makes him think that he wants to, Ben says because he's capable of things that most other men aren't, that every choice he's made in his life, whether it was to murder, or to torture, hasn't really been a choice, that it's in his nature, it's what he is, he's a killer, Sayid says that he's not what he thinks he is, that he doesn't like killing, Ben says that then he apologizes, that he was mistaken about him. A DHARMA van comes barreling through the barracks, on fire, crashes into a house, sets that on fire, Kate and Sawyer go to rescue, Kate pulls people out of the window, Sawyer goes to the water hydrant, tells people to grab the hose, wrenches, fire gear, asks for help, Jack comes, Sawyer says three years, there were no burning buses, and they're back for one day, Jack uses a hose to put out the fire, Sawyer gets another one, calls Phil at Security on his walkie, La Fleur, they have a fire, to get to building 15, Phil hears on his walkie, says he's on his way, he leaves the Security station unmanned. Ben opens up Sayid's cell door, they leave the Security station, run through the jungle, Ben follows Sayid, a van pulls by on the path, Sayid tries to hide Ben, but the van stops, Jin gets out with a flashlight, Sayid sees him, Jin asks what he's doing here, how he got out, Sayid says that Sawyer let him go, that they were going to kill him, on walkie, Phil says that the prisoner escaped, to be on the lookout, he could be armed, Sayid says they don't know that Sawyer released him, please, he needs to keep moving, Jin says okay, let him talk to him first, he calls La Fleur, says it's Jin, but Sayid knocks Jin out, Ben is surprised, says whoa, asks where he learned to do that, he tells Sayid to come on, that they'd better go, Ben says he called La Fleur, Sayid takes Jin's gun, tells Ben that he was right about him, that he is a killer, Sayid shoots Ben in the chest, even seems somewhat remorseful about it, Sayid cries, then takes off.
