Episode Analysis of 1.09 "Solitary"

WARNING: If you have not already seen all of LOST, please DO NOT READ THIS.

My LOST re-watch and in-depth episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that was LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. Seriously. Stop it. Now. Go watch it. Then, come back here.

To read my original post on this episode, please refer to Solitary.

This episode was written by David Fury, and directed by Greg Yaitanes. It originally aired on November 17th, 2004.

This is a Sayid Jarrah flashback-centric episode.

We begin with a shot of Sayid Jarrah sitting on beach, after he's left the rest of the plane crash survivors out of shame for what he did to Sawyer, and also to map the Island.

Initial Reaction to "Everybody Loves Hugo"

This episode was pretty awesome. I always enjoy Hurley-centric episodes and this one was no exception. On the surface, Hurley appears to be the source of the show's comedy, and merely that, but there is some deep-seeded seriousness to his story. He is the source which brought us to the numbers, one of the story's largest mythological mysteries. Speaking of which; we still don't know the answer to what the numbers really mean. Sure, Hurley is funny and he says "dude" a lot, but he's also a very serious character whose story tugs at your heart-strings. He sees dead people and relays messages from Jacob. He is haunted by these things, but tries to make the best of the situation. He can make you laugh one minute and cry the next. That says a lot about the depth of his character. This season; Hurley has become a leader. Everybody loves Hugo? You're damn straight we do.

Questions & Predictions on LOST SEASON SIX!

I can't believe that it's finally here. I've spent over five years religiously, and almost frighteningly, dedicated to this show. I watched from the first moment it was on the screen. Who would've thought that I'd be here right now and that I'd learn so much from a television show. It feels bittersweet right now, as I am glad that it is ending because we'll get the story that was supposed to be told, but I'm also sad. But for right now, I'm going to be excited, and I am sure that when it all comes to an end, I'll spent a lot of time reflecting on the series as a whole.

Here are some of my thoughts, questions and predictions for the FINAL SEASON OF LOST (!!!):

Some of the questions that I ABSOLUTELY NEED answered:
  • What is the Smoke Monster? How was it created?
  • Why is it afraid of the security fences but can be summoned from inside the barracks?
  • How is the island moving through time and space?
  • Why is Desmond special? Will he go back to the island?
  • Why is Walt special? Will we ever see him again?
  • What is Richard Alpert's story? How did he get to the island?
  • Why doesn't he age? Why did Jacob do that to him?
  • What is the story of the Black Rock? How did it get to the middle of the island?
  • What is the sickness? Did Rousseau have it?
  • What or who are the whispers?
  • Who are Adam and Eve?
  • Did the bomb go off? Is it what caused the incident?
  • Who is the good guy, Jacob or the Man in Black?
  • What are the rules and why must there be a loophole?
  • How did Jacob and the Man in Black get to the island?
  • When and how was the four-toed statue destroyed?
  • Is Aaron special? If so, why?
  • What happened to Claire? Did she die?
  • Will she ever find out that Jack is her brother?
  • Why did Desmond have a flash of Claire getting on a helicopter?
  • Will Claire and Aaron ever be reunited?
  • Will Claire or Aaron ever get Charlie's ring?
  • Will John Locke ever get redemption?
  • Is Christian Shephard really dead? Was he on the island before?
  • Why did Jacob visit some survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 at an early age?
  • Why did he visit some as an adult and some after the crash?
  • Why did Jacob touch some of them?
  • Why can't women give birth on the island?
  • What is the significance of the numbers? Why are they cursed?
  • Who built the frozen donkey wheel?
  • What is The Temple for? Who created it?
  • Who was the first to discover the island?
  • Why is the island capable of healing people?
  • Why does the island have a pocket of electromagnetism?
  • How did The Swan fix that problem and why didn't they just built an automated system?
  • Is Sayid dead? Is Juliet dead? Is John Locke really dead?
  • Why did it seem as if Jacob was prepared to die? Did he know what was going to happen?
  • What is the significance of the hieroglyphs on the island?
  • Why did they all have to go back to the island?
  • What is the island? Why is it special? Why are they all there?
Things I'm (somewhat) okay with not having an answer for:
  • What's Libby's story? Why was she in Santa Rosa? Was she working for Widmore?
  • Who and where is Annie? What happened to her?
  • What happened to the Hurley bird?
  • Why was Ilana covered in bandages and speaking Russian?
  • Who killed Nadia? Was it Ben? Did Jacob save Sayid or kill Nadia?
  • Was Richard Malkin a fraud or did he know Claire's plane would crash on the island?
  • Why do the others always say they're the good guys?
  • Why do they kidnap children?
  • What happened with Walt when he was with the others?
  • What is the magic box?
  • How did Anthony Cooper get to the island?
  • When did the purge occur? Who was in charge of it?
  • Why did Radzinsky build a blast door map if he knew where the stations all were already?
  • Did Radzinsky really kill himself?
  • Why did Richard say that he watched them all die?
  • How did Ben and others get to and from the island so freely and how often did they leave?
Predictions for the Final Season (I know of NO SPOILERS whatsoever.):
  • John Locke will get some sort of redemption.
  • We will find out who Adam and Eve are.
  • We probalby won't find out more about Walt, unfortunately.
  • However, I think Walt having dreams about John Locke and what he says to him about him "wearing a suit, and people standing around you, trying to hurt you." are significant.
  • I'm almost positive that we will finally get a Richard Alpert backstory.
  • (More of a hope than a prediction.) PLEASE let the love triangle be over.
  • Desmond will be important. We will learn why he is special and why the rules just don't apply to him.
  • I'm starting to lean more and more toward them not crashing on the island, and landing in Los Angeles.
  • We will finally find out what the island is and why they are there.
  • We will learn more about the bomb going off, if it actually did, and what happens as a result of that.
  • I really feel like the whole story is somehow going to come full circle, and I've felt that way since some time late in Season 2. I would not be surprised if the ending to the show was actually the beginning in some form or fashion and we learned that all we've watched was a way of getting everything right and back to the way it's supposed to be somehow. That would not shock me.
  • The two opposing sides have been going on for a long time. There's Jacob and the Man in Black, Benjamin Linus and Charles Widmore, Jack Shephard and John Locke. There will be great significance to this.
  • This has all probably been going on for a very long time, and has taken a very long time to get to whatever the end point actually is. All of these people are special because they fix the timeline somehow.
  • My biggest hope for the ending is that it will be left with some mystery and it will be something that grows on you over time, becoming more and more significant and mind-blowing as you think about it. I want it to be something that was clearly there all along, but never in your face; something that makes you go back and watch every episode again and you can't believe that you didn't see it.
  • I really trust the writers of this show, so regardless of if there will be things I like or not, which I'm sure there will be, I believe it will all work itself out in a satisfying way.
  • It will be amazing, scary, awesome, mind-blowing, bittersweet, sad, happy.
  • I can't wait!
That all being said, I don't expect every question I have to be answered. I fully expect, and actually hope, that some of the mysteries will be able to live on forever. It will be what keeps people watching and talking about this show for years and years to come, and it is what LOST deserves. I'm sure there will be some things that I am disappointed in, but I have faith and am now, after five years, just along for the journey.

    Questions:
    1. Do Charlotte and Daniel really not know anything? Are they just a Science Team?
    2. What was Claire seeing when she wasn't feeling well?
    3. Hey, Juliet, I thought you weren't a surgeon? So you can't remove a bullet, but you can perform an Appendectomy? What's next, Heart Surgery?
    4. Did Jack get sick for a reason? Was he not supposed to leave the Island?
    5. Why do some people get cured on the Island and some get sick?
    6. How and why is Christian Shephard appearing to Jack off Island?
    7. What did Charlie mean by telling Jack that he's not supposed to raise him?
    8. Is Jack not supposed to raise Aaron or someone else?
    9. What powers the DHARMA stations?
    10. Why does Christian appear to Claire? Why does she go with him?
    Favorites:
    1. "Just watch your tone, Red." Rose
    2. "I don't say nice things about my dad? Well, he was a good storyteller. I'll give him that." Jack
    3. "Don't look at her. Don't talk to her. Don't mess with her. You got a restraining order. 20 feet." Sawyer "What are you, her big brother?" Miles
    4. "Do you think she knows he likes her?" Jin "She's a woman. She knows." Sun
    5. "Where do you suppose all this power's coming from?" Dan "Add that one to the list, Dan." Charlotte
    6. "If you continue to lie... I'm going to hurt your friend Daniel. I'm going to break his fingers one at a time. Do you understand that?" Jin
    7. "Wouldn't you rather be dreaming about something nice back home?" Bernard
    8. "I would like to be able to tell you you' not gonna feel a thing, but... you will." Juliet
    9. "You know, getting engaged is supposed to help reduce stress, not create it." Erika
    10. "Dad?" Claire
    11. "He should be fine. We just have to talk him into resting." Juliet "Good luck with that." Kate
    12. "I'd have followed them, but I have a restraining order." Miles
    Notes:
    1. Jack steps on a Millennium Falcon, which is yet another Star Wars reference.
    2. The toy can also be a reference to Sawyer, who had made several Star Wars references himself throughout the series. Jack also exclaims "Son of a bitch!" which is a Sawyer line.
    3. When Jack is seen shirtless in the flashforward, he has a scar where his appendix would be. Obviously this is shown for continuity, but there was a big deal made over the fact that Matthew Fox had shaved his chest and stomach for this episode, when he was clearly hairy previously. Kate also says that she bought Jack a razor in the same scene. Obviously the chest-shaving was done to show the scar from his surgery in this episode, which was revealed in the flashforward before we knew that it happened on the island.
    4. I always wonder what exactly Jack is responding to when he scoffs at the newspaper and exclaims "A-Rod."
    5. The Yankees/Red Sox series, to my memory, occurred in August of 2006.
    6. This is not my favorite episode ever. In fact, I think it's one of the weakest of Season 4. Maybe it's just that I don't enjoy Jack or Kate flashes so much anymore. I'd rather learn about characters that I don't know that much about yet. However, I love the scene with Hurley. Jorge Garcia's serious acting is so underrated.
    7. When Jack is supposed to work on someone with an L4 vertebrae problem, obviously he was familiar with it already, because he operated on Ben who had a tumor on his L4.
    8. Jack gets a prescription for Clonazepam. Hurley asked Sawyer for Clonazepam in Dave. He said he needed it so that he wouldn't see things. Now Jack is the one seeing things and taking pills.
    9. Jack is looking pretty freakin' crazy right here. This is one of Jack's craziest Crazy-Jack moments.
    10. The title comes from something Bernard says to Jack during the surgery, "dream of something nice back home."
    11. In Raised by Another, Richard Malkin told Claire that she was the only one who could raise the baby, but she wanted to give it up for adoption, when she decides not to, he then changed his story and told her that there was a couple in Los Angeles that would adopt the baby. He said "They're not strangers. They're good people." Now, there is a couple in Los Angeles raising Aaron. Was Richard Malkin somehow talking about Jack and Kate?
    12. You didn't save Kate, Jack. What the hell is wrong with you? Sawyer saved her more than you did.
    13. Why in the hell did Keamy bury Danielle and Karl's bodies face up, showing through the dirt? Not only is he a ruthless kill, but he's lazy too.
    14. Uh, usually the Smoke Monster beats the crap out of people and kills them. Those guys had a few scratches.
    15. Hurley states that someone will be visiting Jack as well, this is reminiscent to ghosts visiting Scrooge in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
    16. This episode was the second time Kate's identity was revealed in a shower scene. Not complaining.
    17. Sawyer's evolution to leader begins, and Jack's drug addiction begins.
    18. I dare you to name a Jack flashback/forward where Jack hasn't cried. Go ahead, find one.

    12. Michael leaves, Walt watches by at the window. From Lostpedia

    14. Michael attacks him, Tom is going to shoot him, so Michael says do it, but Tom says they sent him there, kept tabs on him, realizes that he told Walt what he did, that he couldn't carry the guilt, says that he can't kill himself, that the island won't let him, that he has more work to do, tells him that when he comes to terms with that, he's staying in the Pent House, at Hotel Earl. Michael wants to know what he wants, Tom says in a few days, a freighter, porting Fiji, that it's Widmore's, that they have reason to believe he's finally found the coordinates to the island, that he's heading for it, Michael has a job on the boat, shows him a fake ID, says meet Kevin Johnson, that he's joining the crew as a deckhand, going undercover, that if Widmore finds the island, everyone dies, that Michael can redeem himself for what he did, to give his life, but Michael says he can't go back to the island, Tom says that he's not going back, that he's going so he can kill everyone on board the freighter that's heading for it. Questions:
    1. Why does Miles think it will be so easy for Ben to get $3.2 million?
    2. What is The Temple? Why is it only for the Others?
    3. Why does Ben think it would be the only safe place on the island?
    4. How did Tom get off the island?
    5. When in the timeline did Tom visit Michael? When was he gone?
    6. Was Libby a hallucination or the smoke monster?
    7. What stopped the gun from firing and Michael committing suicide? Was it the island? Was it Jacob?
    8. Why in the hell did Michael tell Walt what he did on the island? How do you tell a ten year old kid that you killed two women?
    9. Who was watching Michael after he left the island?
    10. Why won't the island let Michael kill himself?
    11. How did Miles know that Michael's name wasn't really Kevin?
    12. Does Michael tell Sayid and Desmond the part about Tom Friendly being gay?
    Favorites:
    1. "We're here for him. (Ben)" Miles "Um, we kind of, like, knew that forever ago." Hurley
    2. "I'm sorry. You mean the same guy that killed two women in cold blood to set this little bastard free? And then sold all of us out so he could get off the Island? That Michael?" Sawyer
    3. "Yeah. Miles offered his loyalty in exchange for the money. But as I haven't seen a bank on the island, I didn't think it worth mentioning." Locke
    4. "He wants to survive. And considering a week ago you had a gun to his head, and tonight he's eating pound cake, I'd say he's a guy who gets what he wants." Miles
    5. "It's a cold night. I brought you some extra blankets." Libby
    6. "Excuse me, sir. You got the time?" Tom
    7. "Manhattan, huh? We let you leave one island, and you just go to another one." Tom
    8. "Is this the guy who hit you with the champagne bottle?" Arturo "Yeah, but I had it comin'." Tom
    9.  "Did the bullet bounce off your skull, or did the gun just jam on you?" Tom
    10. "You know those nuts that think the moon landing was faked?" Frank
    11. "What, are you going Nicholson on us? You know, Jack Nicholson in The Shining, when he's bouncing that ball against the wall? Next thing you know, you're gonna go after your wife with an axe." Minkowski "I'm not married, man." Kevin
    12. "You put me on this boat, talked me into blowing it up, and when I push the damn button, a flag pops up." Michael "You actually activated the bomb?" Ben "It's not a bomb! It's a... (catches himself) It's a joke." Michael
    13. When Karl dies. That was the most hilarious death ever. Karl wonders why his water bottle was shot.
      Notes:
      1. So, Mr. Friendly is gay. I guess that's why Kate isn't his type, as he said in A Tale of Two Cities.
      2. Michael's mother notes that he was missing for over two months, which tells us that time on the island and off the island are the same. It had been speculated for a long time that time on the island may lapse differently than the island world, but this is one of the many conformations that it hasn't.
      3. Michael David Kelly claimed in an interview that it in fact was him that appeared in this episode, but obviously was digitally altered.
      4. It made me kind of sad that Michael pawned the watch that Jin gave him. Jin attacked Michael for having the watch in House of the Rising Sun, but they built the raft together and quickly became friends, so Jin gave it to Michael. It was a symbol of how much they grew and their time on the island, and Michael goes and hocks it. Bastard!
      5. I like how Tom has all the funny lines in this episode.
      6. Michael knew Naomi was from Manchester because of Charlie.
      7. When Michael sees Libby on the freighter, she is wearing the same clothing that she died in.
      8. From Lostpedia: "Kevin Johnson" and "Dean Moriarty," from The Economist, share the same passport number: HNSO12153. The passport number: HNSO12153 references Hanso (HNSO) and two of the Numbers 4 and 8 (1+2+1=4 and 5+3=8).
      9. Karl saying "I've got a bad feeling about this" is yet another Star Wars reference.

I know it's a tough position. You have to deal with all those people constantly second-guessing your decisions, and it always starts out so innocently, doesn't it? A question here, a comment there, and then if you're not careful, you find you have a full-blown insurrection on your hands. Believe me, your people are gonna be so angry when they realize you still don't have a plan." Ben "And I assume you have a plan." Locke "I always have a plan." Ben

When the word got out, over 5,000 people came to see her face for themselves. You've survived an airline crash on this island. One minute, you're in a wheelchair. The next minute, you're doing jumping jacks. If 5,000 people came out to see a piece of mold, how many people do you think would come here to see you? Charles Widmore wants to exploit this island, and he'll do everything in his power to possess it." Ben (On the tape, Widmore beats the blindfolded man with his fists.
