Episode Analysis of 1.11 "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues"

WARNING: If you have not already seen all of LOST, please DO NOT READ THIS.

My LOST re-watch and in-depth episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that was LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. Seriously. Stop it. Now. Go watch it. Then, come back here.

To read my original post on this episode, please refer to All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues.

This episode was written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, and directed by Stephen Williams. It originally aired on December 8th, 2004.

This is a Jack Shephard flashback-centric episode.

We begin exactly where we left off, in Raised By Another, in the caves, with Sayid unconscious, Hurley telling Jack, who is tending to Sayid's wounds, and Kate, who asks questions, about Ethan not being in the flight manifest, while Locke looks on in the background. The other survivors in the caves begin to become aware of the situation as Jack raises his voice. Michael joins them to talk about Ethan.

HURLEY: "He wasn't on the plane."

KATE: "Who wasn't on the plane?"

HURLEY: "Ethan.. The Canadian guy. He's not on the passenger manifest."

JACK: "Well, where the hell is he?" [He gets up from tending to Sayid's wound.]

HURLEY: "I don't know. I saw him yesterday, but now.."

JACK: [raising his voice] "Has anyone seen Ethan?"

KATE: "Sayid's leg.."

JACK: [talking louder] "Has anyone seen Ethan?"

This is a Charlie Pace flashback-centric episode.

We begin in the caves, where Charlie Pace plays his guitar to try to distract himself from the fact that he's going through extreme drug withdrawals. He is sweaty and shaking. He looks absolutely awful.

Episode Analysis of 1.01 & 1.02 "Pilot (Parts 1 & 2)"

WARNING: If you have not already seen all of LOST, please DO NOT READ THIS.

My LOST re-watch and episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that is LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. Seriously. Stop it. Now. Go watch it.

To read my original posts on these episodes, please refer to Pilot, Part 1 & Pilot, Part 2. It's insane how long my posts have gotten since then.

The episodes Pilot (Parts 1 & 2) were written by J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, and were directed by J.J. Abrams. They originally aired separately, on September 22nd, 2004 and September 29th, 2004. Despite what everyone might think, these are the only two episodes of LOST written and/or directed by J.J. Abrams. Damon Lindelof steered the ship when J.J. left. Give credit where credit is due.

This is a Jack Shephard, Kate Austen, and Charlie Pace flashback-centric episode.

We begin with the opening of Dr. Jack Shephard's eye, which is quite moving when looking back at the entire series of LOST in hindsight. When you realize that it ended where it all began, it is a chilling moment to watch this scene again.

Series Finale, Initial Reaction to "The End"

It has taken me a long time to finally complete this post. I swear to Duct Tape that I literally spent at least 80 hours working on this damn post. Between taking notes from watching the episode, to typing them all out, to organizing all my thoughts in a coherent manner.. It has taken forever. But, I enjoyed it all. Working on this has really helped me to explore and understand the entire episode and how I felt about it.

I hesitate to say that it was everything that I'd hoped it would be, because really, I went into this entire season with a completely open mind, and was just allowing myself to fully enjoy it. With that being said, I could not have imagined "The End" being any better than what it was. The entire episode felt like an homage, a tribute, a love-letter even, to the fans of the show. It was a masterpiece. I had been anticipating this for years, since they announced that LOST would end in 2010, and, in my opinion, they delivered. It was thoughtful. It was heartfelt. It was touching. It made me realize that the past six years of my life were truly a great experience. It made me want to go back and watch the whole damn thing all over again. I fucking loved it. But, I also can understand why some people didn't like it. So, let's discuss all of that, and everything in between, shall we?

This is going to be a long one. Bear with me.

Initial Reaction to "Happily Ever After"

Oh, brotha. I said that LOST would be picking up in the next couple of weeks and I'm happy to say that it definitely has. Desmond centric episodes are arguably the best of the series. You cannot deny that. You also cannot deny that the intelligent and sophisticated storytelling are not the only thing that makes the character of Desmond so uniquely and profoundly intriguing. Desmond's world is not only mythological, but it's emotionally charged in a way that is more realistic and intense than any other character on this show. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Desmond is the heart of this show. He is everything that makes it unlike any other show than there has ever been. It is not only because he has great importance to the mythology, but it's because he makes you laugh and cry and cheer for him when he gets a win. It is because, when Henry Ian Cusick is on screen and portraying the character of Desmond David Hume, you never want it to end. Not for a second. For someone that wasn't even on this show since the very beginning, I'd have to say it's pretty damn important for a character to have the ability to impact a show in such a way. For every moment that he's gone, there is something missing. Needless to say, I am glad to have Desmond back. Now, let's discuss our favorite Scotsman and yet another of his episodes that did not disappoint in the least.

Questions:
  1. Do Charlotte and Daniel really not know anything? Are they just a Science Team?
  2. What was Claire seeing when she wasn't feeling well?
  3. Hey, Juliet, I thought you weren't a surgeon? So you can't remove a bullet, but you can perform an Appendectomy? What's next, Heart Surgery?
  4. Did Jack get sick for a reason? Was he not supposed to leave the Island?
  5. Why do some people get cured on the Island and some get sick?
  6. How and why is Christian Shephard appearing to Jack off Island?
  7. What did Charlie mean by telling Jack that he's not supposed to raise him?
  8. Is Jack not supposed to raise Aaron or someone else?
  9. What powers the DHARMA stations?
  10. Why does Christian appear to Claire? Why does she go with him?
Favorites:
  1. "Just watch your tone, Red." Rose
  2. "I don't say nice things about my dad? Well, he was a good storyteller. I'll give him that." Jack
  3. "Don't look at her. Don't talk to her. Don't mess with her. You got a restraining order. 20 feet." Sawyer "What are you, her big brother?" Miles
  4. "Do you think she knows he likes her?" Jin "She's a woman. She knows." Sun
  5. "Where do you suppose all this power's coming from?" Dan "Add that one to the list, Dan." Charlotte
  6. "If you continue to lie... I'm going to hurt your friend Daniel. I'm going to break his fingers one at a time. Do you understand that?" Jin
  7. "Wouldn't you rather be dreaming about something nice back home?" Bernard
  8. "I would like to be able to tell you you' not gonna feel a thing, but... you will." Juliet
  9. "You know, getting engaged is supposed to help reduce stress, not create it." Erika
  10. "Dad?" Claire
  11. "He should be fine. We just have to talk him into resting." Juliet "Good luck with that." Kate
  12. "I'd have followed them, but I have a restraining order." Miles
Notes:
  1. Jack steps on a Millennium Falcon, which is yet another Star Wars reference.
  2. The toy can also be a reference to Sawyer, who had made several Star Wars references himself throughout the series. Jack also exclaims "Son of a bitch!" which is a Sawyer line.
  3. When Jack is seen shirtless in the flashforward, he has a scar where his appendix would be. Obviously this is shown for continuity, but there was a big deal made over the fact that Matthew Fox had shaved his chest and stomach for this episode, when he was clearly hairy previously. Kate also says that she bought Jack a razor in the same scene. Obviously the chest-shaving was done to show the scar from his surgery in this episode, which was revealed in the flashforward before we knew that it happened on the island.
  4. I always wonder what exactly Jack is responding to when he scoffs at the newspaper and exclaims "A-Rod."
  5. The Yankees/Red Sox series, to my memory, occurred in August of 2006.
  6. This is not my favorite episode ever. In fact, I think it's one of the weakest of Season 4. Maybe it's just that I don't enjoy Jack or Kate flashes so much anymore. I'd rather learn about characters that I don't know that much about yet. However, I love the scene with Hurley. Jorge Garcia's serious acting is so underrated.
  7. When Jack is supposed to work on someone with an L4 vertebrae problem, obviously he was familiar with it already, because he operated on Ben who had a tumor on his L4.
  8. Jack gets a prescription for Clonazepam. Hurley asked Sawyer for Clonazepam in Dave. He said he needed it so that he wouldn't see things. Now Jack is the one seeing things and taking pills.
  9. Jack is looking pretty freakin' crazy right here. This is one of Jack's craziest Crazy-Jack moments.
  10. The title comes from something Bernard says to Jack during the surgery, "dream of something nice back home."
  11. In Raised by Another, Richard Malkin told Claire that she was the only one who could raise the baby, but she wanted to give it up for adoption, when she decides not to, he then changed his story and told her that there was a couple in Los Angeles that would adopt the baby. He said "They're not strangers. They're good people." Now, there is a couple in Los Angeles raising Aaron. Was Richard Malkin somehow talking about Jack and Kate?
  12. You didn't save Kate, Jack. What the hell is wrong with you? Sawyer saved her more than you did.
  13. Why in the hell did Keamy bury Danielle and Karl's bodies face up, showing through the dirt? Not only is he a ruthless kill, but he's lazy too.
  14. Uh, usually the Smoke Monster beats the crap out of people and kills them. Those guys had a few scratches.
  15. Hurley states that someone will be visiting Jack as well, this is reminiscent to ghosts visiting Scrooge in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
  16. This episode was the second time Kate's identity was revealed in a shower scene. Not complaining.
  17. Sawyer's evolution to leader begins, and Jack's drug addiction begins.
  18. I dare you to name a Jack flashback/forward where Jack hasn't cried. Go ahead, find one.

And once she's gone, once she's dead, then you'll understand how I feel. And you'll wish you hadn't changed the rules." BenFrom Lostpedia
Questions:
  1. How does the doctor's body arrive at the Island before he is killed on the Freighter?
  2. What is the time difference between the Freighter and the Island?
  3. Is the Risk game a clue? Is Australia really the key to everything?
  4. Why is Sawyer impervious to bullets?
  5. Did Claire die in the house explosion?
  6. Did Ishmael Bakir really kill Nadia? Is he really working for Charles Widmore?
  7. What is the significance of the hieroglyphs in Ben's hidden room?
  8. Did one of the polar bears turn the frozen donkey wheel?
  9. What are the rules in which Ben is referring to? How has Widmore broken them?
  10. Why does Miles say "I wouldn't be too cure about that." when referring to Claire living?
  11. Why can the Smoke Monster be summoned from beneath Ben's house?
  12. Why can't Ben kill Charles Widmore?
  13. What is the true connection between Ben and Widmore?
Favorites:
  1. "No. My gut says we're getting off this island." Jack "I thought your gut was sick." Kate
  2. "We're all gonna die." Hurley "Calm down, Chicken Little. The sky ain't falling just yet." Sawyer "This is exactly what he wants--to fight amongst ourselves. You're making a big mistake, dude." Hurley "It's his to make, Hugo. (To Sawyer) Let's get on with it." Locke "Right. ...I'm attackin' Siberia." Sawyer
  3. "Surrender! Surrender!" Arab Man "Oh, so you do speak English." Ben
  4. "Let me guess. "14-J" ain't the code for the pizza boy." Sawyer
  5. "When? "When" is kind of a relative term." Daniel
  6. "What's going on?" Doug
  7. The whole scene where the log carriers die and Sawyer escapes without a scratch.
  8. "I think the technical term is "shock and awe"." Ben
  9. "Charlie?" Claire
  10. "Those people were murdered to make you angry, James. So you'd be more likely to come storming in here and throw me to the wolves." Ben "[Sawyer grabs Ben] Yeah, what's wrong with that? Sounds like a great plan to me. (To Locke) What do you say, on three?" Sawyer
  11. "(Sing-song) I wouldn't if I were you." Ben
  12. "How did you get here?" Sayid "I came across the Syrian border. It's really not as difficult as you might--" Ben "How did you get off the island?" Sayid
  13. "Well, Miles, sounds like you're not gonna collect your $3.2 million." Ben
  14. "(Whispers to Locke) Who's Charles Widmore?" Sawyer "Later." Locke
  15. When Sayid keeps shooting the gun, even after it's out of bullets. Sayid is badass.
  16. "Hang on. "Jacob"? Who the hell's Jacob?" Sawyer
  17. "(To Locke) You harm so much as one hair on his curly head... I'll kill you." Sawyer "Fair enough." Locke
  18. The entire scene with Benjamin Linus and Charles Widmore.
Notes:
  1. Ben shows up in Tunisia, which is the same place that Charlotte found the polar bear bones during her flashback in Confirmed Dead.
  2. The painting seen in Charles Widmore's bedroom is the same one seen at the auction in The Constant.
  3. The scene with Ben and Charles Widmore is very symbolic. Ben is seen in the dark, and Widmore is seen in the light. This is yet another representation of black and white, and could perhaps be a clue, especially if you've seen the end of Season 6.
  4. I remember how mind-bending this episode was when it first aired. You could not believe that they actually killed Alex right in front of Ben, and that he just stood there and let her die. I remember feeling complete and utter shock in that moment.
  5. The scene where Sawyer is going to get Claire and all the random log carrying guys die is hilarious.
  6. This episode shows a lot of guts. My favorite episodes are when the writers take risks and don't assume that I'm too stupid to understand what's going on. I love when they stay complicated and don't spoon-feed me details. Give me the benefit of the doubt.
  7. When Ben arrives in the Sahara Desert and the Arab men on horseback find him, they have a conversation. One notes that there is no trail, the other man wonders where he came from, and asks if he fell from the sky.
  8. Finally, Claire mentions Charlie. What took you so long?
  9. I like how Sawyer is taking charge in this episode and that he's worried about Claire.
  10. Ben's flashforward takes place on October 24, 2005, which is one year, one month and two days after the crash of Oceanic Flight 815.
  11. According to Wikipedia: On October 24,1593 a man named Gil Pérez, who was a Spanish Solider serving the Filipino Guardia Civil, suddenly appeared in the Plaza Mayor in Mexico City.
  12. Any woman that hooks up with Sayid must have a death wish. Every woman he loves dies. Poor Sayid. No wonder why he has to kill people. He's just making it even.
  13. The scene were Alex dies is so sad. The last thing she hears before she dies is that she means nothing to the man she thought was her father, and this is after having to go through the death of her mother who she just met after 16 years and her boyfriend dying right in front of her. That scene is just heart-wrenchingly painful to watch.
  14. The Smoke Monster scene is friggin' awesome. Except for the fact that no one really dies from it.
  15. From Lostpedia: The symbols on Ben's secret room door appear to be hieroglyphs that are determinative signs in Egyptian, a basic translation of these hieroglyphs is "to summon protection."
  16. If you go to If the Earth Were A Sandwich you can see that Tunisia is on the opposite side of the world from the South Pacific, where the Island is, which could be why Ben transports to the Sahara Desert, in theory.
  17. The final scene with Ben and Widmore is one of the two scenes in LOST history that hasn't been shot in Hawaii. It was shot in England to accommodate Alan Dale.
  18. In a deleted scene for this episode, Ben is seen in the Sahara Desert after he kills the men and steals their horse, retrieving money hidden under a rock. When he arrives, he looks around to see if anyone is there, and another Ben is seen in the background laying in the sand, much like when Ben was transported there. The shot can be seen at the 0:25-0:27 mark.
