Episode Analysis of 1.07 "The Moth"

WARNING: If you have not already seen all of LOST, please DO NOT READ THIS.

My LOST re-watch and episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that is LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. This episode was written by Jennifer Johnson and Paul Dini, and directed by Jack Bender. It originally aired on November 3rd, 2004.

This is a Charlie Pace flashback-centric episode.

We begin in the caves, where Charlie Pace plays his guitar to try to distract himself from the fact that he's going through extreme drug withdrawals. He is sweaty and shaking. He looks absolutely awful.

5.10 He's Our You

Tikrit, Iraq--a father tells his son to act like a man, he's urging his son to kill a chicken, his son says he doesn't want to, but he says to do as your father asks, he makes his son stay outside until he does, but the son's younger brother comes, puts his arm around him, he takes birdseed and feeds the chickens, then grabs one, snaps its neck, the father comes and congratulations his son on killing the chicken, says good for you, you did it, but the first son says that it wasn't him, the father realizes that it was his younger son who killed the chicken, he says at least one of you will be a man, the younger one is Sayid, the father says well done. Sayid in cell, a camera is focused on him, Security station, Ben comes in, he says hey Phil, says he brought another sandwich for him, Phil says he doesn't think it's the menu, he's just not eating, Ben says that Horace told him to, Phil asks why he cares, says that the guy is a hostile, Ben says that doesn't mean that he's not hungry, Phil says whatever.
Ben brings Sayid his sandwich, and a book, A Separate Reality, he says that he read it twice, it's good, Sayid says thank you, Ben asks if Richard sent him, asks he's his leader right, Sayid looks at the camera that is watching them, Ben says that it's just a camera, that they can see but they can't hear, Ben says that four years ago, he ran into the jungle, and Richard found him, he said he wanted to leave, that he wanted to join them, so he's been patient, and if Sayid is patient too, he thinks he can help him. "Did Richard send you? [Sayid turns to look at young Ben.] Richard. He's your leader, right? [Sayid looks up towards the surveillance camera and makes a small nod in its direction.] It's just a camera. They can see, but they can't hear. Four years ago I ran away into the jungle and Richard found me. I said I wanted to leave. That I wanted to join you. So I've been patient. And if you're patient too, I think I can help you." Ben
Moscow--man running through door, in apartment, someone is chasing him, he locks the door behind him, goes in another room, security code, opens a safe, Sayid busts the door down, points his gun at him, the man offers him money, Sayid shoots him anyway, with a silencer on the gun, he leaves, it's night, he goes through a gate, Ben is waiting, Sayid says the man tried to bribe him, that it didn't work, Ben says of course it didn't, Sayid asks where to now, Ben says nowhere, that he's done, Sayid asks what he means, Ben says they're done, Andropov was the last one, he says that Sayid has taken care of everyone who posed a threat to his friends, he says that it's been a pleasure working with him, Sayid says so that's it, he killed all those people for him, and now he's just walking away, Ben says he didn't kill them for him, that he's the one who asked for all those names, Ben says that there's no one else in Widmore's organization that they need to go after, he says congratulations, mission accomplished, Sayid asks what does he do now, Ben says that he supposes he should go live his life, he tells Sayid that he's free. "So, that's it? I killed all those people for you, and now you're just walking away?" Sayid "You didn't kill them for me, Sayid. You're the one that asked for their names. There's no one else in Widmore's organization that we need to go after. Congratulations! Mission accomplished!" Ben "What do I do now?" Sayid "I suppose you should go live your life. You're free, Sayid." Ben
Radzinsky and Horace meet with Sayid, Horace tells him to put out his hands, he cuts off his handcuffs, Sayid says thank you, Horace says it's nice to finally hear your voice, says his name is Horace, now is the part where you tell me your name, he says he needs Sayid to tell him what he was doing out there, Radzinsky says to ask him about the model, Horace says he has it, he says those handcuffs, asks if he's having some kind of problem with his people, because either he's having some sort of disagreement, which makes him want to help, or he's a spy trying to infiltrate them, Horace asks Sayid so which is it, Sayid doesn't answer, Horace says he'll give him an hour, to decide whether he wants to talk to him, but if he decides he doesn't want to, then he's going to have to take this to the next level.
Sawyer comes into the kitchen, which has bacon burning on the stove, Juliet looking out the window, Sawyer asks what's on the TV, Jack and Kate are outside the window, Juliet asks if it's over, she says isn't it, this, us, playing house, all of it, says they never actually thought they'd come back, Sawyer says it hasn't changed anything, Juliet asks what if Sayid says something, Sawyer says he won't, he says he has this under control, there's a knock at the door.
Horace says he just spoke to the prisoner, that they have a problem, La Fleur asks why, what did he say, Horace says that he said nothing, which is what worries him, he needs him to tell why he violated the truce, he's going to have to have Oldham do his thing on him La Fleur says that psychopath, no way, Horace says that it's his only choice, La Fleur says to let him have a go at him, he'll talk to him.
Security station, La Fleur tells Phil to take his lunch, Phil asks if he's going back there alone, La Fleur tells him to leave, he asks Sayid how he's doing, Sayid says that a 12 year old Ben Linus brought him a chicken salad sandwich, asks how does he think he's doing, Sayid asks how he could live with him here, Sawyer says he doesn't have a choice, Sayid says is that so, Sawyer says to see how you feel after three years of living in the 70s, that it's lucky for him, he spent that time getting in a position to save his ass, he says sorry to Sayid, then hits him, he says he's going to tell them that he got a confession, he needs them to believe that he didn't get it easily, Sayid will say he was trying to defect, that he'll offer intel in exchange for living with them, Sayid asks why in God's name would he want to do that, Sawyer asks what the hell else he's supposed to do with that, Sayid says to let him go, asks him why not, Sawyer says these people trust him, either he cooperates and joins the party, or he's on his own, Sayid says then he guesses he's on his own.
"These people trust me! I've built a life here--and a pretty good one. I let you go, all that goes away. So you got yourself a choice, Chief. Either you cooperate and join the party in DHARMAville, or you're on your own." Sawyer
In the DHARMA cafeteria, Geronimo Jackson poster on the wall, Hurley with food, he brings Jack and Kate breakfast, dipping sauces, he's a DHARMA chef, he asks them what's going on with Sayid, Jack says that he doesn't know anything yet, Kate says that he was at Sawyer's last night, Jack says he told him to leave him alone and let him do his job, Hurley asks if he's going to, Kate says she'll talk to Juliet, see what she'll tell her, Hurley asks why Juliet would tell them anything if Sawyer won't, Kate asks why, Hurley says because they're together, like living together, like not as roommates, together like Jack and Kate were, he says that he thought it was kind of obvious, who couldn't see that coming, Jack stops him, Hurley says he's going to make some more waffles, Kate asks Jack if he knew, he says yeah.
Roger Linus cleaning up Security station, talks to Sayid, he says that he can't figure out how the hell he got caught, that his people are supposed to be smart, and how dumb is he that he got captured by these idiots, Sayid says and yet he's the one mopping up after them, Roger says he'll see how cute he is once Oldham gets done with him, Ben comes in with food, sees his dad there, says he was bringing him a sandwich, Roger says he's never made a sandwich in his life, Ben says he made one for himself, Roger grabs him, hurts him, Ben says he made sandwich for him, Roger asks who told him, Ben says he just thought, Roger tells him to go home, that he'll tell him what to think.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic--Sayid working on houses, Ben shows up, Sayid asks how he found him, Ben says he looked, Sayid asks what he wants, Ben says that John Locke is dead, that he thinks he was murdered, Sayid asks why anyone would kill him, Ben says that he'd say it was retribution for the work they did, so then Sayid is in danger, if he can find him, so can the people who found Locke, just like they're watching Hugo, he says that a man in a Sedan has been there all week, just waiting, presumably for Sayid or him to show their faces, Ben says that's why he's there, Sayid says he actually came all this way to suggest that he kill this man, Ben asks if he doesn't want to, Sayid says what makes him think that he wants to, Ben says because he's capable of things that most other men aren't, that every choice he's made in his life, whether it was to murder, or to torture, hasn't really been a choice, that it's in his nature, it's what he is, he's a killer, Sayid says that he's not what he thinks he is, that he doesn't like killing, Ben says that then he apologizes, that he was mistaken about him. "I'd say it was retribution for the work you and I have been doing. So you're in danger, Sayid. If I can find you, so can the people that found Locke. The same people who, even as we speak, are sitting outside Hugo's mental institution." Ben

They come to get Sayid out of his cell, La Fleur says this is his last chance, asks if he has anything to say, Sayid says nothing, so La Fleur zaps him, says to take him to Oldham,

In a DHARMA van, Horace, Radzinsky, Phil, take Sayid out of van, music is playing, a tent, fire, Billie Holiday, they call Oldham out, ask if he's ready, Sayid asks Sawyer who is that man, Sawyer says he's our you, Oldham comes out, takes out a needle, injects something into a sugar cube, possibly some kind of LSD, he says they'd better put him in the restraints, they handcuff Sayid to a tree, he fights them, Oldham says don't worry, they're for his protection, he says there are side effects to what he's giving him, he tells them to open his mouth, he puts the sugar cube in, they force Sayid's mouth closed, Oldham tells Sayid not to be afraid, to turn his mind off, and let it take effect, he says that it's beyond his control, so fighting it is a poor use, whether he struggles or not, one thing is for sure, he will tell them the truth. Back at the Long Beach Marina, Ben tells Sun that there's someone here in Los Angeles, that he take to them there, that it's the same place that will tell them how to get back to the island, Kate asks if that's what this all was about, says he's insane, that they're all crazy, Ben asks where Sayid is going, Sayid says that he doesn't want any part of this, and if he sees them again, it will be extremely unpleasant for them both.
Sayid in a restaurant bar, a woman comes to sit down, it's Ilana, she asks if they have a menu, Sayid asks for another MacCutcheon, please, she asks what's that run him, Sayid says excuse him, she says that scotch, what does a glass run him, Sayid says that whatever it is, it's worth it, Ilana says she doesn't understand why anyone would pay $120 for a glass of anything, Sayid says if she knew what his drink costs, why she asked him, she says the same reason she's eating her dinner at the bar, instead of at a table, she says she'll have the rib-eye bloody, Sayid asks if she's a professional, Ilana says a professional what, asks if he thinks she's a prostitute, she says she's not a professional anything, she just thought he looked sad, and she likes sad men, Sayid says he's sorry to hear that, she moves closer, she says so other than drinking alone at bars, what he does, for a living, Sayid says that he's between jobs at the moment, Ilana asks what did he do, Sayid says it was the only thing he was ever good at, she asks then why did he quit, he says he's trying to change, she says that she knows why he's sad now, that when you are that good at something, there are always going to be people who tempt you into staying the same, Sayid asks how she knows so much about temptation, Ilana says to buy her a glass of that scotch and she'll tell him. Horace talks to Sayid, Oldham says he's going to ask him a few questions, that he wants him to relax and answer them truthfully, not that he'll have any choice about it, Oldham asks what is your name, he says Sayid Jarrah, Oldham asks why was he in handcuffs when they found him, he says because he is a bad man, Oldham asks was he running away form his people, Sayid asks what people, Oldham says the hostiles, he says he is not a hostile, Horace asks then where did he come form, Sayid says that he came on a plane, Oldham asks what plane, Sayid says it was Ajira Flight 316, and that's how he returned to the island, Oldham says returned, asks Sayid if he's been there before, Sayid says the first time he was on Oceanic Flight 815, he says he was there for 100 days and then he left, he says to ask Sawyer, Oldham says who's Sawyer, Radzinsky says who cares, to asks him about The Flame, Oldham asks Sayid what he knows about their stations, Sayid says he knows The Flame was a communications station, The Pearl was to observe other stations, The Swan was to study electromagnetism, but of course, that was before the incident occurred, Radzinsky wonders how he could know the name of The Swan, they haven't even built it yet, he says that he told them he saw the model, he knew it, he is a spy, Horace says to cool it, Sayid says they're all going to die, gong to be killed, Horace asks how exactly he would know this, Sayid says because he's from the future, Oldham says maybe he should've used half a dropper, Sayid laughs, says he used exactly enough. "I came on a plane." Sayid "What plane?" Oldham "Ajira flight 3-1-6.And that's how I returned to the island." Sayid "Returned? You've been here before?" Oldham "Oh, yes. The first time, I was on Oceanic flight 8-1-5. It crashed. I was here for a hundred days. Then I left. Ask Sawyer." Sayid

Juliet shows Kate around the Motor Pool, car talk, asks how she is with a flat-four engine, Kate has no idea what she's talking about, Juliet says it's okay, she asks Kate if Jack told her about them, Kate says no, that it was Hurley actually, Juliet says it's kind of a relief, she wasn't quite sure how to do it, without sounding like she was telling her to stay away.
"It's kind of a relief, actually. I wasn't quite sure how to do it without it sounding like I was telling you to stay away." Juliet
They show up with Sayid at the barracks, bring him back to Security.
They have a meeting, Horace asks what they do with him, Radzinsky says they kill him, La Fleur says hold on, that they're not killing anyone, Horace says that he violated the truce, La Fleur asks since when did they start acting like them, he says that they're civilized, Horace says they are, that they have a rule of law, and they've given him every opportunity to defend himself, Radzinsky says he's seen things, that he's obviously a spy, La Fleur says he was escaping, that he obviously has problems with his people, Radzinsky says and sharing secrets are the quickest way to solve those problems, Horace says he's going to need a little time to consider, Radzinsky says the longer he's among them, the more danger they're in, La Fleur says he can talk to him, that he just needs more time, Radzinsky says he had his time, tells Horace they need to vote, make a decision, either that or he'll call Ann Arbor, and they'll make it for them, Amy says Radzinsky's right, she tells Horace please, that she can't sleep with one eye open, they have a baby now, they have to think about Ethan, they have to think about all the children there, she asks how are they going to feel safe with this man around, she says that she doesn't know what he's up to, but they can't keep him there, she says that they have no choice, Horace says okay, he says that they'll put it to a vote, he says all in favor of Radzinsky's solution, to raise their hand, everyone raises their hand except La Fleur, Horace says he'd really like to say it's unanimous, La Fleur raises his hand begrudgingly. Sayid and Ilana making out, she says just for the record, she was really just having dinner, he asks if she's afraid he'll get the wrong idea, she says she thinks it's too late for that, Sawyer holds her boot, Ilana says to take it off, but she kicks him in his face, they fight, she pulls a gun on him, says if he so much as flinch and he's dead, she says that he asked earlier if she was a professional, she is, that she was hired to bring him to Guam, Sayid asks who hired her, she says the family of Peter Avellino, the man he killed in cold blood last year, on a golf coarse, he asks if she's a bounty hunter, Ilana says it doesn't matter what she is, that he's going to answer for what he's done.
"Who hired you?" Sayid "The family of Peter Avellino--the man you killed in cold blood last year on a golf course in the Seychelles." Ilana "You're a bounty hunter?" Sayid "Doesn't matter what I am. You're going to answer for what you've done." Ilana
Sawyer visits Sayid in his cell, tells him to hit him in the face, that he owes him one anyway, so make it a good one, Sawyer says he'll take his keys out of his pocket, let himself out, that Phil is outside, he tells Sayid he's a dimwit, that he reckons he can get his gun without him noticing, Sayid says that he appreciates what he's doing, but he's fine right there, Sawyer says they're going to kill him, they took a vote, that even a new mom wants him dead, Sayid says that he's going to stay here, calls him James, Sawyer says this morning, he was begging him to let him go, Sayid says because, when he woke up in the jungle, and he realized he was back on this island, he thought there was no purpose to it, but now he knows why he's here, Sawyer says to get shot, says he's out of his mind, he leaves.
"Because...when I woke up in the jungle and I realized I was back on this island...I felt there was no purpose to it. But now I know exactly why I'm here." Sayid
Sawyer goes to Kate's house, asks her why she came back, he says that Sayid just fulled his ears with some crap up his damn purpose, and he wants to know, why they came back, Kate says she doesn't know why everyone else came back, she just knows why she did, they hear a noise.
"I don't know why everyone else came back. I just know why I did." Kate
A DHARMA van comes barreling through the barracks, on fire, crashes into a house, sets that on fire, Kate and Sawyer go to rescue, Kate pulls people out of the window, Sawyer goes to the water hydrant, tells people to grab the hose, wrenches, fire gear, asks for help, Jack comes, Sawyer says three years, there were no burning buses, and they're back for one day, Jack uses a hose to put out the fire, Sawyer gets another one, calls Phil at Security on his walkie, La Fleur, they have a fire, to get to building 15, Phil hears on his walkie, says he's on his way, he leaves the Security station unmanned. After Phil leaves, Ben Linus enters the Security station, Sayid asks what happened to his glasses, Sayid says for bringing him the sandwich, he says he knows, that his father was a hard man as well, Ben says he really hates it there, asks Sayid if he lets him out, will he take him with him, to his people, Sayid says yes, Ben, he will, that's why he's here.
"I really hate it here. If I let you out...will you take me with you, to your people?" Ben "Yes, Ben, I will. That's why I'm here." Sayid
At LAX, attention passengers, Ajira Airways Flight 316, Sayid with Ilana, asks her if she's sure they're going to Guam, where else would they be going, Sayid sees Hurley and Jack, asks her a favor, sees Kate waiting to board the plane, he asks can they get the next plane, he says that he's very superstitious when it comes to flying, Ilana says she'll buy him a rabbits foot at the gift shop, Sayid sees them all on the plane, Ilana says that she's sorry about the handcuffs, but at least they're in business, they hear someone say wait up, please, thank you for not closing, Sayid sees Ben get on the plane, asks Ilana if she's working for Benjamin Linus, she asks who that is, Sayid says that he's a liar, a manipulator, a man who allowed his daughter to be murdered to save himself, a monster just short of genocide, Ilana asks why she would work for someone like that, Sayid says that he did.
"Are you working for Benjamin Linus?" Sayid "What?" Ilana "Are you working for him?" Sayid "Who's Benjamin Linus?" Ilana "He's a liar, a manipulator...a man who allowed his own daughter to be murdered to save himself...A monster responsible for nothing short of genocide." Sayid "Why would I work for somebody like that?" Ilana "I did." Sayid
Ben opens up Sayid's cell door, they leave the Security station, run through the jungle, Ben follows Sayid, a van pulls by on the path, Sayid tries to hide Ben, but the van stops, Jin gets out with a flashlight, Sayid sees him, Jin asks what he's doing here, how he got out, Sayid says that Sawyer let him go, that they were going to kill him, on walkie, Phil says that the prisoner escaped, to be on the lookout, he could be armed, Sayid says they don't know that Sawyer released him, please, he needs to keep moving, Jin says okay, let him talk to him first, he calls La Fleur, says it's Jin, but Sayid knocks Jin out, Ben is surprised, says whoa, asks where he learned to do that, he tells Sayid to come on, that they'd better go, Ben says he called La Fleur, Sayid takes Jin's gun, tells Ben that he was right about him, that he is a killer, Sayid shoots Ben in the chest, even seems somewhat remorseful about it, Sayid cries, then takes off. 4.10 Something Nice Back Home

Juliet wakes Jack, everyone is arguing with Charlotte and Daniel, Daniel says they have no signal, Jack says to clam down, agrees, says he knows they're lying, sooner or later their people will come back for them, and they'll be waiting, promised they'd get off the Island, Jack collapses in pain.From Lostpedia
Jack in bed, gets up, bare chested, the phone rings, Jane confirming consult with Ms. Berenberg, has a scar on his lower abdomen, goes to kitchen, hears whispers, trips on toy, makes coffee, newspapers reads "Yankees Bludgeon Red Sox in Sweep," goes to take a shower, Kate is there.From Lostpedia
Jack is reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Aaron, he tells Kate that his old man used to read that story to him, that he was a good story teller, Kate says she's glad he changed his mind, glad he's there.
"Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: `Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I've been changed in the night. Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? Jack gets up, they say he fainted, he says he's just dehydrated, but Kate says that he's not fine.
Claire is feeling better, but she has a bit of a headache, says at least she's not seeing things anymore, Miles hears voices, asks who Danielle and Karl are, they find the bodies buried, face up, Sawyer says they'll be back to the beach by noon tomorrow.From Lostpedia
Jacks says he has food poisoning, Juliet says to lift his shirt, checks it out, she says that it's his Appendix, Jack says the pain started yesterday, that it hasn't ruptured yet, but Juliet says they have to take it out.
Juliet sends Sun to The Staff station for medical supplies because she knows where it is, she needs the medical instruments for Jack's Appendectomy but Sun doesn't know what they look like, Daniel offers to help, says he's done animal autopsies, says they're Scientists and they don't take anyone to get hurt, so Sun and Jin go and Charlotte and Dan join them, Juliet says that if they try to run, to shoot them in the leg.From Lostpedia
Juliet says they need to create a sterile environment, that Jack can't be brought to The Staff instead because his Appendix might rupture, and he'll die.
Sawyer tells Miles he has a restraining order and to stay away from Claire.
Rose wonders why Jack got sick, Bernie says it was bad luck, happened the day before they're supposed to leave, Rose says people don't get sick on the Island, they get better.
"Why did he get sick?" Rose "Why? It's just--it's just bad luck." Bernard "The day before we're all supposed to be rescued, the person that we count on the most suddenly comes down with a life-threatening condition, and you're chalking it up to bad luck?" Rose "Well, what are you saying, that--that Jack did something to offend the Gods? People get sick, Rose." Bernard "Not here. Here, they get better." Rose
Juliet shaves Jack's stomach, she says she did a lot of Appendectomies in her Medical Residency, Jack looks at where she is shaving and tells her the incision is two inches lower, Jack wants to stay awake for the surgery and talk her through it, they can use Lidocaine to numb the area, he'll watch and Kate will hold a mirror, Juliet says she needs someone with Medical experience to help, she wants Bernard to instead, but Jack says no, he wants Kate to be there.
Jack, working at St. Sebastian's, with patient Ms. Berenberg who leaves, he sees someone walking, looks like Christian Shephard, Erika asks him to take a look at an x-ray on the L4, he gets a call from Dr. Stillman, he's from Santa Rosa, he says Hurley refuses to take meds, stopped sleeping, and therapy is useless because he thinks his doctor doesn't exist.

Notes:

Jack steps on a Millennium Falcon, which is yet another Star Wars reference.
The toy can also be a reference to Sawyer, who had made several Star Wars references himself throughout the series. Jack also exclaims "Son of a bitch!" which is a Sawyer line.
When Jack is seen shirtless in the flashforward, he has a scar where his appendix would be. Obviously this is shown for continuity, but there was a big deal made over the fact that Matthew Fox had shaved his chest and stomach for this episode, when he was clearly hairy previously. Kate also says that she bought Jack a razor in the same scene. Obviously the chest-shaving was done to show the scar from his surgery in this episode, which was revealed in the flashforward before we knew that it happened on the island.
I always wonder what exactly Jack is responding to when he scoffs at the newspaper and exclaims "A-Rod."
The Yankees/Red Sox series, to my memory, occurred in August of 2006.
This is not my favorite episode ever. In fact, I think it's one of the weakest of Season 4. Maybe it's just that I don't enjoy Jack or Kate flashes so much anymore. I'd rather learn about characters that I don't know that much about yet. However, I love the scene with Hurley. Jorge Garcia's serious acting is so underrated.
When Jack is supposed to work on someone with an L4 vertebrae problem, obviously he was familiar with it already, because he operated on Ben who had a tumor on his L4.
Jack gets a prescription for Clonazepam. Hurley asked Sawyer for Clonazepam in Dave. He said he needed it so that he wouldn't see things. Now Jack is the one seeing things and taking pills.
Jack is looking pretty freakin' crazy right here. This is one of Jack's craziest Crazy-Jack moments.
The title comes from something Bernard says to Jack during the surgery, "dream of something nice back home."
In Raised by Another, Richard Malkin told Claire that she was the only one who could raise the baby, but she wanted to give it up for adoption, when she decides not to, he then changed his story and told her that there was a couple in Los Angeles that would adopt the baby. He said "They're not strangers. They're good people." Now, there is a couple in Los Angeles raising Aaron. Was Richard Malkin somehow talking about Jack and Kate?
You didn't save Kate, Jack. What the hell is wrong with you? Sawyer saved her more than you did.
Why in the hell did Keamy bury Danielle and Karl's bodies face up, showing through the dirt? Not only is he a ruthless kill, but he's lazy too.
Uh, usually the Smoke Monster beats the crap out of people and kills them. Those guys had a few scratches.
Hurley states that someone will be visiting Jack as well, this is reminiscent to ghosts visiting Scrooge in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
This episode was the second time Kate's identity was revealed in a shower scene. Not complaining.
Sawyer's evolution to leader begins, and Jack's drug addiction begins.

Jack, with a beard, on a plane, having a drink, Oceanic, Flight Attendant says they're landing in 20 minutes, gives him a newspaper, turbulence, Los Angeles Times, obituaries.
Jack driving, stops on a bridge, makes a phone call, 3105550148, says he read something, and hangs up, stands on the edge of the bridge, says to forgive him, is going to jump, but then he hears a car crash, a child and mother, Jack gets down from the bridge. From Lostpedia
Everyone is ready to leave, Sayid says Bernard and Jin are excellent shots, highly motivated, dynamite in place, they won't miss, tells Jack no matter what happens, keep moving for the radio tower, don't turn back, willing to give his life, Jack understands, says good luck.
"They're both excellent shots...and highly motivated. The dynamite's in place. We won't miss. Jack, no matter what happens here, I want you to keep moving; keep moving for that radio tower. There were only 2 explosions, they heard gunshots, Jack says everyone is okay, that they have to keep moving, Rose and Sun are worried.
Charlie says he's there to turn off jamming equipment, whatever they do, he's going to turn it off, Bonnie says he doesn't know the code, only Bonnie, Greta, and Ben know, Charlie says the station will be flooded, he won't need the code, he'll turn off the jammer, and the helicopters will come and rescue his friends, Boonie asks him if the station floods, then what happens to him, Charlie says he dies. Tom tells Ben they're all dead, Shephard and his people are gone, killed 7 of their people, they caught 3 of them, they knew they were coming, Ben says it was Juliet, they're not talking, Jarrah, Kwon, and the dentist, Ben says shoot Kwon, they'll answer questions, Jin and Sayid say don't talk, but Bernard tells them they're hiking to the radio tower, a woman parachuted there, had a satellite phone, they're going to call her ship, a kid came in on a canoe, warned them, Karl, Ben says don't kill them yet.
Ben draws a map to the radio tower, only he is going, says Richard is going to The Temple, Richard says the people are asking questions, about leaving home, what happened to Locke, Jacob, the rumor that everyone that went to the beach is dead, Ben says they're not all dead.
Ben tells Alex they're going for a walk, to find Jack and his friends, Alex says she's going, Ben says she wants to see Karl again, he's leaving in 10 minutes.
Richard says there's 40 of them, they'll do whatever it takes to get off the island, Ben says he'll talk them out of it.
They stop a stream, Kate says something is wrong, they should've caught up with them by now, she wants to go back to see if they're okay, wants to know what's wrong with Sawyer, says they sent Juliet to see if she's pregnant too.
Desmond wakes up, looks for Charlie, gun shots hit the canoe, it's Mikhail at the shore, shooting at him, Desmond dives in the water, follows the cable, goes through the moon pool, comes up, Charlie sees him while Bonnie and Greta are in the communications room, says to hide, Desmond goes to hide inside a locker in the station. Jack is checking on the woman from crash, taking pills, meets Dr. Hamill, the new Chief of Surgery, says he's a hero twice over, Jack wants to operate, Dr. Hamill says Gary Nadler is doing surgery, he pulled the woman's 8 yr old son out of flaming car, then went back for her, says he'll let him know what happens.
"Doctor Shephard, the hero. Twice over." Dr. Hamill
"Jack. Last night you pulled this woman's eight year old son out of a burning car then you went back for her. I think you've done enough." Dr. Hamill

Sawyer stops, says he's going back, he says no to Kate going, says he didn't want to go with her before, Juliet says there's a hidden cash of guns, a couple of miles, go back to the beach, route past it, Juliet says she has to go, kisses Jack.
Charlie can't find bridge of a song he's writing, Bonnie says she's getting the spear gun, because she wants it to hurt, Mikhail shows up, without his eye patch, says he thought they were on assignment in Canada, they made a promise not to tell anyone, asks where Desmond is, Charlie asks why Ben said the entire station was flooded when it wasn't, or why Boonie and Greta have been jamming transmissions off the island.
"This idiot swam down from a boat. I was just shooting at his friend. He dove down here." Mikhail "Here's a better question to ask, Cyclops. Why did your little friend Ben tell you people that this entire station was flooded when it isn't? Or, why these two have been jamming transmissions off the Island?" Charlie
Ben calls in to the communications room, says everything he did for the island, Mikhail asks if it was necessary to jam his own people, Ben says Mikhail is a loyalist, to trust him, trust Jacob, the island is under assault by forces stronger than anything it's had to deal with in many years, meant to protect by any means necessary, jamming for everyone' security, in a serious situation, Ben says he made a mistake, should've told Mikhail, apologizes, needs his help to clean up the mess he made, kill Charlie, make sure jamming mechanism continues to function at all costs, can't risk Bonnie and Greta telling the others, so kill them too, Ben says if he said the same to them, he'd already be dead.
Juliet says they were building a runway, there are no guns, she lied, it was the only way Jack would let them go back, she's going back because of karma.
Hurley shows up, he wants to help, but Sawyer says he's just going to get in the way, he doesn't want him to get hurt.
Ben says he's heading North, get to them before the tower, delivering Alex to her new family, didn't want Karl to get her pregnant, he can't let them leave.
Locke's eye opens, he is alive, can't use his legs, finds a pistol next to him, contemplates suicide, he hears the whispers, Walt shows.

Jack tells Kate that Sawyer didn't mean what he said, he was trying to protect her, that's why he said not to go back for him, because he loves her.
Jack driving, listening to Nirvana, Scentless Apprentice, looking at the obituary, in a black neighborhood, makes another phone call, hangs up, HOFFS/DRAWLAR Funeral Home, coffin, funeral director, says there was no funeral, only a viewing, nobody showed up, just him, he asks if it's a friend or family, but Jack says either, he doesn't want to open the casket, Jack is visibly upset, takes his last pills. Jack asks when they'll get to the radio tower, Rousseau says in about an hour, she says the last time she was there was the day she recorded the message, says she's not leaving the island, there's no place for her back there, she's home now, Ben shows up suddenly.
Mikhail asks if it's possible to turn off the equipment, Boonie and Greta say yes, they're the only ones know, who have the code, if the station is flooded, nothing would happen, the casing for the equipment is waterproof, they're there because they're following orders, never asked why, trust Ben, Jacob, Mikhail shoots Boonie and Greta, Desmond comes out, harpoons Mikhail in the chest, Charlie says don't kill Bonnie, they need her.
"No. Because I trust him. And I trust Jacob. And the minute I start questioning orders, this whole thing, everything that we're doing here falls apart.
Ben wants to talk, killed 7 of his people, Kate checks the perimeter, says there's only 2 sets of tracks, Jack says he has 5 minutes, takes his walkie.
Jack in a pharmacy, the pharmacist says no more refills, Jack says he has another prescription, guy in line says he's a hero, Oxycodone, prescription from Christian Shephard, Jack says he's out of town, the pharmacist wants to call his office, but Jack leaves.
"Hey, I know you. You're the hero." Man "I'm not a hero." Jack "Yeah, yeah, we saw it on TV. Hey lady, what's wrong with you? Just give this guy whatever he needs. Do you know what he did?" Man
Ben says not long ago, he made a decision, took the lives of over 40 people in a single day, Jack's going to do that, Naomi is not who she says she is, representative of people trying to find the island, one of the bad guys, if he phones the boat, every person on the island will be killed, get phone and give it to Ben, Jack says no, gives Ben the walkie back.
Ben tells Tom to kill Jin, Sayid and Bernard, if doesn't hear voice in 1 minutes, tells Jack to bring him the phone, Jack says they're going off the island, all of them, Ben asks what he wants to get back to, father's dead, wife left him, time is out and Jack hears gunshots, he beats the crap out of Ben, tells Tom he's leading his people to the radio tower, going to get them rescued, then he's going to come and kill him.
"Let me ask you something, Jack. Why do you wanna leave the Island? What is it that you so desperately want to get back to? You have no-one. Your father's dead, your wife left you, moved on with another man. Can you just not wait to get back to the hospital? Get back to fixing things? It's twenty seconds now. Just get me the phone, Jack." Ben
"I'm going to lead my people up to the radio tower. And I'm gonna make a call. And I'm gonna get 'em all rescued, every one of them. And then I'm gonna come find you, and I'm gonna kill ya." Jack
Charlie is trying to get the code, tells Bonnie she has a chance to make Ben angry, she gives him the code, Good Vibrations, Beach Boys, keypad, numbers, notes, programmed by a musician, 5458775543776116.
"You said it's my destiny to turn off that jammer. Okay, Bonnie, we're both gonna die down here. All right, let's be perfectly honest. A one-eyed maniac just killed your friend, he shot you in the back. It would appear that your glorious leader, Ben, put him up to it. Are you a sodding idiot? You have the opportunity to make Ben very very angry. Why would you not take that?" Charlie
"Beach boys. Good vibrations. On the keypad, the numbers, they're notes. It was programmed by a musician." Bonnie

Jack tells Kate Ben radioed the beach, killed Jin, Bernard and Sayid, that he let it happen, she can't tell Sun and Rose, he promised Sayid to keep moving, wants Ben to see them get off the island, then he's going to kill him.

Ryan says it was an order, Tom says they've should've killed them for real. Sayid, Jin and Bernard aren't dead, it was a bluff by Ben.
Sawyer and Juliet get to the beach, Sawyer says 3 guys, 4 guns, they hear something, Hurley shows up with the Dharma van, drives onto the beach, runs over Ryan, Sayid karate's Jason's neck, Tom surrenders to Juliet, but Sawyer kills him anyway, says it's for taking the kid off the raft, that he didn't believe him. Jack steals drugs from the hospital, checking the Arland charts, Dr. Hamill says he left 3 messages, Jack says his phone is broken, Mrs. Arland woke up, 2 hours ago, she's in recovery, in some pain, highly responsive to reflex test, lucid, described series of events that caused her accident, driving over a bridge, saw a man standing on the railing, about to jump, got distracted, lost control, ran into median and rolled over, was hit by a car form behind, asks Jack what he was doing on the bridge, Jack wants to know how long he's been at the hospital, what he's been through, says get his father, see if he's drunker than him.
"Mrs. Arland, the woman you saved, woke up in recovery about two hours ago. She was in some pain but highly responsive to the reflex test and entirely lucid. But then she described the series of events that caused her accident. She says she was driving over the bridge when she saw man standing on top of the railing, about to jump off. She was distracted, lost control of her car. She ran into the median, rolled over and was hit by the van behind her. So the obvious question here, Jack, is how did you get to that flaming car so fast? What were you doing on that bridge?" Dr. Hamill

Desmond is getting the diving gear, Charlie says he'll tap Good Vibrations out, Desmond says he's not having anymore flashes, Charlie figures out the code, punches it in, then the blinking light goes off.

Penelope Widmore, she wants to know how he got the frequency, she hears Charlie call Desmond, says he's here with him, he's brilliant, asks if she's on a boat, 80 miles off shore, asks about Naomi, parachutist, Penelope doesn't know Naomi, she's not on a boat. From Lostpedia
