It was only so that we could save his life. Ben. He's a great man. I know you find that hard to believe but he is. You probably feel like you don't have a choice. But you do, Jack. Free will is all we've really got, right? Anyway, just wanted to put in my two cents. I told you before, you can trust me. I want you to trust me, now, when I tell you that doing the surgery is absolutely the right thing for you to do. It's the right thing because he deserves to live." Juliet tells Jack while the video is playing and she's relaying a completely different message.
  30. "Ignore everything I'm saying. Ben is a liar. And he is very dangerous. Some of us want a change. But it has to look like an accident. It has to look like we tried to save him. And that's up to you, Jack. It's a complicated surgery. No one would ever know. And I would protect you. Now tell me to turn off the movie." Juliet tells Jack on the movie. From Lostpedia

  34. "I ask for no forgiveness, Father. For I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive. A small boy once asked me if I was a bad man. If I could answer him now, I would tell him that when I was a young boy, I killed a man to save my brother's life. I am not sorry for this. I am proud of this! I did not ask for the life that I was given. But it was given, nonetheless. And with it I did my best." Mr. Eko
  35. "You speak to me as if I were your brother." Yemi
  36. "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. The Lord is my shepherd." Mr. Eko
  37. Locke and Sayid find Eko's body, Eko relays a message to Locke as he's dying.
  38. "He said we're next." Locke
Questions:
  1. Was Yemi and manifestation of the smoke monster?
  2. Where did Yemi's body go?
  3. Why did the smoke monster seem frightened or skeptical of Mr. Eko in his previous encounter with it, but attack him now?
  4. Where did the Others get their funeral rituals from?
  5. Why would the island want Mr. Eko to die?
  6. Is the glass eye found in The Arrow Mikhail's?
  7. Again, why didn't Ben just ask Jack to do the surgery?
  8. Why do Eko and Locke see two different versions of the monster? Can it appear differently to each person?
  9. Why does Juliet ask Jack to kill Ben? If he doesn't, won't Ben die anyway?
  10. If Eko had confessed, would he still have died?
Favorites:
  1. "Is that supposed to hurt my feelings?" Desmond
  2. "I'm not that big on mysteries." Jack
  3. "You people have cheeseburgers?" Jack "You have no idea what I went through to make this for you. I killed the cow, processed the meat, baked the bun. And the fries... try rendering animal fat." Juliet "No ketchup?" Jack
  4. " I'm telling you this, Jack, because my wonderful plan got shot to sunshine when you saw my damned x-rays and figured out I was dying." Ben
Notes:
  1. As much as I liked Mr. Eko, for some reason, I felt completely unaffected by his death. I'm still not sure why, because he's one of the characters I miss the most. It's unfortunate to find out that he was only killed because the actor no longer wanted to be in Hawaii.
  2. You still owe Yemi one church, Mr. Eko!
  3. The Others appear to be very cult-like in this episode with the funeral.
  4. I love the actors that play young Eko and Yemi, who are really brothers.

  6. Eko has his identification papers forged in Sydney by a man named Caldwell, he's leaving the country to go to the United States, but his trip will have to be postponed.
  7. Eko's monsignor wants him to investigate a miracle, a girl who drowned, but then came back to life, he listens to the mother's story of what happened and tells the monsignor that he doesn't believe her story, but he says that's why he wants Eko to investigate it. From Lostpedia

  17. Kate asks Sawyer how Ana Lucia got his gun, Sawyer reveals that the guns and heroin where buried in a hole inside his tent the whole time, when they leave Hurley asks if they've seen Libby, Kate breaks the news to him.
  18. Locke has a visionary dream about Eko, he sees Yemi, who tells him to follow, Eko limps while Yemi takes him to the top of the same cliff that beachcraft was on and Boone fell from, Yemi is in a wheelchair, he tells John to wake up.
  19. Eko goes to the home of the girl, Charlotte, Richard Malkin is her father, he tells Eko there was no miracle, that she never died, that the coroner made a mistake, that she appeared dead because she had hypothermia. He says that his wife is trying to spite him because she knows that he's a fraud because he makes his living as a psychic, that he gathers intelligence on people and he exploits it. From Lostpedia
  20. Eko climbs to the top of the cliff, but he says that he doesn't see anything, he then discovers a spot on the ground where nothing is growing, he sees a question mark in the ground there, like the one from the blast door map and Locke's drawing, the ground is salted. From Lostpedia
  21. "A target so that this place can been seen from up above." Eko
  22. Eko finds a door, another "hatch" or station, they uncover it by pushing the plane away from the door underneath it.
  23. Jack gives Libby the heroin as Hurley stands by, he tells Michael there were going to have their first date and that he's glad that Michael is okay.
  24. The Pearl, a shaft leading down with a ladder to a room, a Dharma symbol, lights, two chairs, TV monitors, one of them monitoring The Swan kitchen, Jack walking by, cameras inside, computer displaying "Print log Y/N," Locke presses Y and Execute, then it starts printing, Eko finds notebooks, nothing written inside, Locke finds a pneumatic tube, puts his map drawing in it, Eko finds another Orientation Film.

    From Lostpedia
  25. The Dharma Initiative, Station 5 of 6, The Pearl, Dr. Mark Wickman, monitoring station for other Dharma Initiative projects, observed and recorded, observation for 3 weeks with a partner observing psychological experiment in progress, of another station, The Swan, not aware of the experiment, record everything in notebooks, subjects believe their jobs are important, place notebook in container and insert in pneumatic tube, it will be transported to them, 8 hour shifts, then proceed to the Pala Ferry, where they will be taken back to the barracks, tape made in 1980.
  26. Eko collects the notebooks, papers, the log print out in the station because he thinks they may be important, he tells Locke that he thinks the work he's been doing in the hatch is more important than ever, Locke says it's not real, it's a joke, that they're rate in a maze with no cheese, Eko says that they're being tested, that they don't do it because of the film.
    From Lostpedia
  27. "We do it because we believe we are meant to. Isn't that the reason you pushed it, John?" Eko
  28. Eko is at the Sydney Airport, Flight 815, Gate 23, Charlotte shows up there, says that she saw Yemi when she was between places, he said that Eko would come to see her, that Yemi wants Eko to know that he will see him soon.

  32. Eko tells Locke about Yemi, about the plane he was on, both planes crashing on the island.
  33. "This cross was worn by my brother, Yemi. Yemi was a great man, a priest, a man of God. And because I betrayed him he was shot and died. He was placed on a plane which took off from an airstrip in Nigeria half a world from here. Then, the plane that I was on crashed on this island. And somehow, here, I found my brother again. I found him in the same plane that took off from Nigeria. In the same plane that lies above us now, that has concealed this place. And I took this cross from around Yemi's neck and put it back on mine, just as it was on the day I first took another man's life. So let me ask you--how can you say this is meaningless? I believe the work being done in the Hatch is more important than anything. If you will not continue to push the button, John, I will." Eko
  34. Jack tries to ease Libby's suffering while Hurley tries to talk to her.
  35. "I'm sorry I forgot the blankets." Hurley
  36. "Michael." Libby dies trying to warn them, with a look of pure terror on her face, while Jack tries to assure her that it's okay, that Michael survived.
  37. Jack closes Libby's eyes while Hurley cries, Kate cries and Sawyer comforts her, the alarm goes off, Eko and Locke walking through the jungle, returning, Michael in the armory, the prompt on the computer monitor in The Swan.
Questions:
  1. Was Charlotte Malkin really dead? Was she on the other side? Did she see Yemi?
  2. Is Richard Malkin really psychic? Was he telling Eko the truth?
  3. Was Locke's original dream of the beachcraft meant to lead him to The Pearl?
  4. Who occupied The Pearl station?
  5. Is it real? Is there a psychological experiment being observed on the people in The Swan station, or is it really on those in The Pearl? Was the information that was recorded used for anything?
Favorites:
  1. "Well, ain't that swell, Gimpy McCrutch over here covers up that the Artist Formally Known as Henry Gale tried to strangle your little amiga, and suddenly it's on me when she goes vigilante." Sawyer
  2. "Your map in inexact." Eko "No kidding." Locke "These landmarks, is that a river?" Eko "No, it's a wavy line." Locke
  3. "Would you like to watch that again?" Eko
Notes:
  1. Ana had the gun, and as far as Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Locke know, "Henry" attacked her and took the gun, then shot her, Libby and Michael, yes? Well, if that were true, then why would Ana be sitting on the couch, relaxed, shot in the abdomen? Why does no one question this? It confuses and angers me that no one would be suspicious of this situation until later, when Sayid, the man of reason and intelligence, knows that Michael has been compromised. Where is the CSI? It is quite clear that none of what Michael claimed actually happened.
  2. When Eko has a dream to follow and knocks Locke out and he wakes with Eko sitting next to him, it is reminiscent of when Locke experienced, the dream he had of the beachcraft, which also ties him to Eko, and what he did to Boone in Hearts & Minds.
  3. The autopsy tape, from DarkUFO: Doctor: This is a Caucasian female. She's 161 cm, 51.3 kilos, body prepped and washed by the very lovely Valerie McTavish. Assistant: Ian, stop it. Doctor: Commencing with the post. Whisper: That's her (or), That's enough. Doctor: This is a clear case of drowning. I'll begin with a thoracic. Charlotte Malkin: John! (screaming)Whisper: She's alive. Whisper: How will we know? Assistant: Oh my God! Doctor: Valerie!Assistant: She's Alive! Doctor: I think she's trying. Charlotte Malkin: Let John Locke go (on)! Whisper: She's not dead. Whisper: I found it. Doctor: Try and calm down (Assistant screaming stop, stop). Doctor: Valerie get.. she's crying, don't just stand there do something! Whisper: We’re sending them in (or), Let’s hear what she says.
  4. Dr. Marvin Candle appeared in The Swan Orientation film, but appeared as Dr. Mark Wickman in The Pearl Orientation film, where he also no longer has a prosthetic left arm as he did in The Swan Orientation, which suggests that The Pearl was made first.

2.10 The 23rd Psalm

  1. Nigeria, Eko and his brother, Yemi. A thug tells Yemi to kill a man, but he won't do it, so Eko does it on his behalf. They ask him his name and call him Mr. Eko, rip his necklace with a cross off, then the thugs take him away with them. From Lostpedia

  9. Black smoke passes them by.
  10. Yemi is a priest, his church is selling statues for the polio vaccine. Eko visits his brother for the first time in 3 years, he wants to use church relief to transport drugs out of the country, but Yemi refuses to let him.
  11. "I've only done what I needed to do to survive. How is that a sin?" Eko
  12. Kate gives up her hatch/button duty to Michael.
  13. "I was a good person." Charlie tells Eko it was his brother's fault he did drugs.
  14. Eko and Charlie find priest in the jungle, the same one that Locke and Boone found. He has gold teeth, Eko says he knows him, that he saved his life.
  15. Eko threatens Yemi, he makes Eko and his men priests, they want 300 Virgin Mary statues.
  16. "Yemi, I understand that you live in a world where righteousness and evil seem very far apart, but that is not the real world." Eko
  17. Charlie and Eko encounter the smoke monster in the jungle when Charlie climbs tree. Eko is not frightened by it, rather it seems the smoke monster is frightened of him. It appears to read his memories, flashes, people's faces, whispers, then it disappears. From Lostpedia
  18. Michael talks to Walt on the Swan's computer right before Jack walks in on him. From Lostpedia
  19. Eko is loading the beachcraft with the statues and drugs, Yemi tries to stop him. The military comes in, Yemi is shot and put on the plane, Eko is left behind.
  20. "Do not get on that plane, Eko. You saved my life once and now I'm here to save yours." Yemi "Save my life?" Eko "Look, if you get on this plane. If you do this..." Yemi "Do what, Yemi? Are you a prophet now?" Eko From Lostpedia
  21. The same beachcraft is the one on the island. Eko finds Yemi's body, with his cross around Yemi's neck. He tells Charlie it's his brother. They burn the plane, he tells Charlie that he is a priest, gives him a statue to make up for the one that he broke.

  24. Claire kicks Charlie out, says he lied to her.
  25. Charlie has a large stash of the Virgin Mary statues for himself.
    Questions:
    1. Why did the Monster decide to not attack Mr. Eko?
    2. What are the flashes in the Monster when it hovers in front of Eko? Did it read his memories or thoughts?
    3. Who was talking to Michael on the computer?
    4. How did Eko know the Virgin Mary statues were the same ones that he was smuggling drugs with on the beachcraft?
    5. Was Eko the one who was meant to crash on the island in the beachcraft? Is the island his destiny?
    6. How did the Nigerian drug plane get to the South Pacific?
    7. Did Yemi know the plane would crash on the island?
    8. Is Charlie using drugs?
    Favorites:
    1. "Yeah, that must have been tough to live up to, right? The pressure of everyone saying, "Why can't you be more like your brother, Moses?" Claire
    2. "Hey, Jin, do you like The Kinks?" Charlie
    3. "Oh, thank you very much, Jin. I do have a beautiful voice, don't I?" Charlie
    4. "Uh, I'm lost. It was dark. I was following Sayid. Right afterwards a big bag of rocks fell on my head so I'm sorry if I'm a bit spotty with the geography." Charlie
    5. "You climb it. What if I don't? You going to beat me with your Jesus stick? I find it a little odd that your scripture stick has dried blood on it." Charlie
    Notes:
    1. The two brothers that play young Eko and young Yemi are actually brothers in real life.
    2. From Lostpedia: Even though the line of the 23rd Psalm that Eko recites with Charlie is supposed to be "the valley of the shadow of death," both clearly say, "the shadow of the valley of death." When the writers created this scene, they made that mistake, but upon reflection believed that the error was appropriate as Eko was never a proper priest.
    3. The first time we knew of Yemi was when Locke had a dream about the plane and Boone climbed up into it, discovering Yemi's body inside.
    4. Mr. Eko comes face to face with the Smoke Monster and it did not harm him, just as John Locke did.
    5. Charlie's story with his brother, Liam, parallels the story of Eko and his brother, Yemi.
    6. This is where the Charlie and Claire story really starts to get annoying.
    7. The whispers with Mr. Eko and the Smoke Monster, From Dark UFO: (Facing off with Mr. Eko) Who are you and why are you here? Report, report! Saw Charlie with him. There’s Charlie. Go to hell. Steadily. (Within the smoke) He’s trying here. Nothing yet. Now try him from here, okay. Those are the roles (or rules) you accept. Go to hell (said with Eko’s accent). Nine. Where? Seven. He’s hiding something. He’s hiding from me.

    8. From Lostpedia: Deus Ex Machina originated as a theatrical device in ancient Greek theatre. This device consisted of a physical crane that lowered a character down onto the stage, the character representing a god. This god would help the characters with a sudden twist in plot. This term would come to mean any device within a plot that provided a sudden change, or solution, in plot; Deus Ex Machina literally translates into "God from the machine" in Latin; In script writing, the term Deus Ex Machina is often used to refer to a solution to the story, a means to an end that comes out of nowhere and has nothing to do with the story, sometimes leaving the audience feeling cheated; Deus Ex Machina is one of the final chapters of Watership Down written by Richard Adams.
