Episode Analysis of 1.01 & 1.02 "Pilot (Parts 1 & 2)"

WARNING: If you have not already seen all of LOST, please DO NOT READ THIS.

My LOST re-watch and episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that is LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. Seriously. Stop it. Now. Go watch it.

To read my original posts on these episodes, please refer to Pilot, Part 1 & Pilot, Part 2. It's insane how long my posts have gotten since then.

The episodes Pilot (Parts 1 & 2) were written by J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, and were directed by J.J. Abrams. They originally aired separately, on September 22nd, 2004 and September 29th, 2004. Despite what everyone might think, these are the only two episodes of LOST written and/or directed by J.J. Abrams. Damon Lindelof steered the ship when J.J. left. Give credit where credit is due.

This is a Jack Shephard, Kate Austen, and Charlie Pace flashback-centric episode.

We begin with the opening of Dr. Jack Shephard's eye, which is quite moving when looking back at the entire series of LOST in hindsight. When you realize that it ended where it all began, it is a chilling moment to watch this scene again.

Analysis of Epilogue, "The New Man in Charge"

Wow. It's been a while since I've done this. I'm a little rusty. I've been writing a post about the Finale, "The End" and my thoughts on the entire series, and the aftermath of everything for a few months now, but I still haven't even come close to finishing all of my thoughts and theories on the whole matter, so that's going to have to wait for bit. So, before I finished doing all of that, I figured I'd brush up on some LOST because I've been thinking about it again a lot lately.

I haven't bought the LOST Season Six DVD Set as of yet, and I have the first Five Seasons already, so I'll be holding off from buying the LOST Complete Collection Box Set for at least a little while, but I had a chance to watch  the 12-Minute Epilogue, titled "The New Man in Charge," online a few weeks ago when it was leaked, and now that the DVD has finally come out, I figured I'd do some writing about it. This is the last new footage that I will probably ever write about LOST, so that's kind of sad. Well, that is unless they come out with something new, which I could see ABC/Disney doing, so maybe that's a lie.

After I finish this, and my post about the Finale and everything else, I'm going to be dong a re-watch of Season Six, in the same style that I've done Seasons before, and then a re-watch and analysis of the entire Series, which will be different than everything else I've done. I plan to focus on analyzing each episode with the knowledge of having watched the entire Series, which should be interesting and a lot of fun. I really want to go back and reflect on everything, because I feel like then, and only then, will this entire experience come to an end. But, let's be realistic, this whole thing is never going to be over for me. I'm going to be watching and thinking about LOST for the rest of my damn life, so deal with it. It comes with the territory now.

  55. "There were no survivors of Oceanic 815. Don't ask questions, just do what you were hired for. 1. "Well, amusing as the mute game invariably is, you are aware, John, that I detest you, aren't you? You do remember repeatedly punching me in the face and accusing me of using heroin when I was not." Charlie
  2. "What, did you rob a bank?" Eddie
  3. "What's that? You're not taking drugs are you, John? I only ask because of the strict zero tolerance policy you've enacted, and I wouldn't want you to have to start punching yourself in the face." Charlie
  4. "Yeah, I know, I get it. You're going to go in your little magic hut and I'm going to stand out here in case you devolve into a monkey." Charlie
  5. "You know, when I used to get high, I'd watch nature programs on the Beeb. Polar bears are meant to be quite clever. Very clever. They're like the Einsteins of the bear community." Charlie
  6. "Hairspray? Now, I hate to be the one to point this out to you..." Charlie
  7. "Bear? Is that you?" Hurley
  8. "So, like, the hatch blew off your underwear?" Hurley "Fine, you want to discuss this in great detail right now?" Desmond
  9. "You're not going to, like, turn into the Hulk, or something?" Hurley
Notes:
  1. The opening shot of this episode is very similar to the opening scene of the series, in The Pilot, Part 1 where there is a close-up of Jack's eye and a shot from above of Jack lying on the jungle floor.
  2. In the episode ?, Mr. Eko said to Locke, "We wait for further instructions."
  3. There is an on-going theory that this episode is actually a flash forward, started by, I believe, Ralph of The Dharmalars. Although, I like this idea, and think it would make this episode somewhat redeemable because it sucks ass, but unfortunately, I don't think that is true. But if it is, in fact, true, that commune is very Dharma-like.
  4. It's a little strange, Locke carrying so many guns. It's a bit out of the norm of the usual John Locke flashbacks that we're used to.
  5. First episode where we're introduced to Nikki and Paulo.

Questions:
  1. Were the Others taking blood or injecting something?
  2. Did the Others know that the plane would crash on the island? Did Ben know?
  3. What were the cages for? What kind of zoological research was Dharma doing?
  4. Did Kate eat breakfast with Ben? What happened? Why are her wrists raw?
  5. Was the intercom really broken? Was Jack hallucinating? Did Christian Shephard really try to communicate with Jack through it?
  6. How did the Others know so much? Where did they get the information in the files from?
  7. How could they get a copy of Christian Shephard's autopsy report?
  8. Did the Others drug and brainwash Jack? Did they get information from Sarah?
Favorites:
  1. The plane crash and the pan-out of New Otherton.
  2. "So I guess I'm out of the book club." Ben
  3. "You look pretty." Jack
  4. "You think I'm stupid!" Jack
  5. "I'm a repo man. You know, when people don't pay their bills I go into the bank and collect their possessions. I'm a people person so I really love it." Jack
  6. "What are the people like from your plane?" Karl "Oh, they're just awesome." Sawyer
  7. Sawyer figuring out the machine in his cage.

Notes:
  1. Jack walking into the glass wall: priceless.
  2. You're right, Ben. The next few weeks will be very unpleasant. I'm not exactly fond of the first several episodes of Season 3.
  3. Tom says that Kate isn't his type, which foreshadows us finding out that Tom is gay.
  4. Jack stalking Sarah and telling her she looks pretty in the lawyer's office, when she's clearly adamant about them getting a divorce is so pathetic.

  4. Kate eating the Apollo candy bar cracks me up every time.
  5. Desmond calling Locke Box Man.
Notes:
  1. There are a lot of pointless scenes in this episode. We really don't need to see everything over again just to see it from someone else's point of view. A lot of things in the episode are drawn out for no reason and could have been done a lot quicker.
  2. While I really like the Michael flashback, I did not enjoy the on-island (in water) scenes with him and Sawyer. They just seem a little too dramatic and overacted. Every time he's yelling "Waaaaaalt!" all I'm thinking is "Shuuuuut uppppppp!" Needless to say, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of this episode, but it's still better than most things on TV.
  3. The appearance of Ezra James Sharkington!
  4. Susan Lloyd and her lawyer.. what a bunch of bitches.
  5. I really like Michael in the flashback of this episode, and I feel bad for him.
  6. Sawyer pulling out a bullet with his bear hands, badass, yet makes me cringe.
  7. I think after this episode is where I officially started to hate Locke, because the Locke that I knew from Season 1 died.
  8. The numbers add up to 108!
