We begin in the caves, where Charlie Pace plays his guitar to try to distract himself from the fact that he's going through extreme drug withdrawals. He is sweaty and shaking. He looks absolutely awful.

5.13 Some Like it Hoth

1. A microwave reads 3:16, a man says I'm telling you it's a steal at 400, in an apartment, he asks if a woman has to check with her husband, she says that it's just her, a boy calls his mommy, comes in, asks if he can have a quarter for the vending machine, the mother says I told you to wait by the pool, the man says that he thought it was just you, she says that she meant her husband was out of the picture, that it's just her and her son, the man says he doesn't know, that most of the other tenants, they don't like noise, woman says he's very quiet, man says he's going to need two months up front, she gives the boy a quarter, he leaves, she tells him no running, says you hear me, Miles, the boy walks around, a car alarm goes off, he goes to the vending machine, but he has a vision, a feeling, he goes to apartment #4, touches the door, looks down at a rabbit, takes the key out from underneath, opens the door, looks inside, he yells for his mom, mommy, help, they go in the apartment, a man is dead on the floor, the landlord says it's Mr. Vonner, Miles' mom asks what were you doing in here, Miles says that man was all alone, that he was scared, and his chest hurt, he kept calling out for Kimberly, the landlord says that was his wife, that she died last year, asks Miles how he would know that, Miles says that he heard him, mom says what are you talking about, Miles says he's still talking right now, mom says he's dead, Miles says he told her, he could hear him.

2. "He... he was all alone. He was scared. His chest hurt. He kept calling out for Kimberly. I heard him." Miles "Miles, what are you talking about?" Lara "He's still talking right now." Miles "Honey... he's dead." Lara "I told you! I can hear him! I can hear him!" Lara

Sawyer calls Miles on his walkie, Miles asks where he's been, Sawyer says he needs him to take care of something, the security tapes from the pylon cameras feeds, they need to accidentally get erased, Miles asks why, Sawyer says that he doesn't have time for questions, to just do it, he tells him to look on his monitors to see which ones, asks Miles if he sees them, Miles says he's on #4, asks is that Kate, Sawyer says to just erase it, and if anyone asks, he's off the grid, he's looking for the escape hostile, Miles says you mean your pal, Sayid, Sawyer asks if he's going to help him or not, Miles says yes, he has it, Sawyer says he owes him one. 4. Sawyer tells Kate to go back and find Juliet, see what they know so far, he's going to find Sayid, going to do his best to cover it up, in case she hasn't noticed, he's head of security, Kate leaves.
5. Horace goes into security, asks Miles where's La Fleur, Miles says he's out looking for escaped prisoner, that he must be out of range, tried to reach him on his walkie, Horace says he needs La Fleur, but he's going to have to ask Miles for a favor, Horace says that he's going to bring him into the circle of trust, asks Miles can I trust you, Miles says absolutely, Horace says take this out to Radzinsky, at grid 334, he says that he's going to give him something in return, to bring it back to him with no questions asked, Horace asks Miles does he understand, Miles says they're not supposed to be in 334, he asks isn't that hostile territory, Horace says welcome to the circle of trust, Miles doesn't get the tape, he leaves in a DHARMA van, drives, Radzinsky comes out from nowhere, stops the van, points a rifle at Miles, Radzinsky says what are you doing out here, that he was expecting La Fleur, Miles says La Fleur is busy, that Horace sent him instead, that he's in the circle of trust, Radzinsky says to get out, Miles says he's supposed to give him this, hands him a package, and says that Horace said he had something for him, Radzinsky whistles, calls someone out, he opens the package, men come out of the jungle with a body on a stretcher, Miles asks what happened to him, Radzinsky says he had an accident, Miles asks what kind of accident, Radzinsky says that he fell into a ditch, Miles looks at the body, sees a hole in the man's head, he asks if the ditch had a gun, Radzinsky says it doesn't matter what happened, because knowing that is not his job, that his job is to do what he tells him to, the men cover up body, put it into the back of the van, Radzinsky says to take him back to Horace now, Miles, Miles gets in, then looks at the body in the back of the van, opens up the body bag to see a man, Miles says okay, asks the body, so what really happened. 6. "Um... we're not supposed to be in 3-3-4. Isn't that Hostile territory?" Miles 
7. Knocking on a door, Apartment #7, Miles, a teenager, dressed punk, a woman answers, Miles says that he needs to see her, the woman lets him in, a dog is barking outside, Miles' mom is very sick, she looks like she's dying, possibly of cancer, she's in a hospital bed, really sick, losing her hair, Miles sits down next to her, Miles says mom, it's me, she wakes, she says Miles, Miles says that he's sorry that he couldn't make it by sooner, she says it's okay, that he's here now, she asks why did you come, Miles, he says he needs her to tell him why he's this way, how he does the things he does, and he needs to know why she won't talk to him about his father, she says because he never cared about them, never cared about him, Miles says needs to know where he is, she says it doesn't matter where, Miles says it does matter, she says please, Miles says that he has a right to know, she says that he's dead, your father, kicked us out when he was just a baby, he didn't want anything to do with us, so the less you knew about him, the better, Miles says why didn't she just tell him, she says because it was over, your dad has been dead a long time, Miles asks where's his body, she says that it's somewhere he could never go.

8. "I need you to tell me why I'm this way... how... how I do the things I do. And I need to know why you won't talk to me about my father." Miles "He's dead. [Miles releases his mother's hand in shock.] Your father... kicked us out when you were just a baby. He didn't want anything to do with us. So, the less you knew about him, the better." 9. Miles back at security, Horace on the phone, he says Pierre, if it was about the electromagnetism, they need to know, he says that he just got back, I'll send him out with it right away, Horace hangs up, asks Miles did he bring the package, Miles says package, you mean the corpse, Horace says yeah, now he needs him to bring it to Dr. Chang down at The Orchid, Miles says listen, he's security, if he just needs someone to drive a van, can't someone from the Motor Pool do it, Horace says since La Fleur decided to disappear, he's all he's got, so just bring it out to Dr. Chang, and they'll all call it a day, Miles leaves.
10. Hurley is outside, putting stuff in Miles' van, Miles says he can't, Hurley says he just signed it out, asks Miles where he's going, he says to The Orchid, Hurley says he is too, that he made sandwiches for the crew, ham and cheese, asks if Miles wants one, says and he made his secret garlic mayo, Miles says he's waiting for the neext van, Hurley asks why, he says they're going to the same place, why don't they carpool, he says that it'll help them with global warming, which hasn't happened yet, so maybe they can prevent it, he says wait a second, aks Miles if he's on some kind of secret mission, Miles says to just get in.
11. Juliet at the Infirmary, Kate comes in, Juliet asks how'd it go, Kate says they gave him to the others, Juliet asks if anyone saw them, Kate says she doesn't think so, Juliet asks did James help, Kate says yes, thank you so much for sending him, Roger comes in with a crate of things from The Staff, says he got there as soon as he could, he's out of breath, notices that Ben is no longer there, an empty bed, he says where's Ben, asks did he, Juliet says no, that she's so sorry, she was gone for ten minutes, she doesn't know what happened, Roger says she's his doctor, she's supposed to watch him, Juliet says she doesn't know, Roger says he's going to security, he leaves, Juliet tells Kate, well, here we go.

In DHARMA van, Hurley writes in a notebook, Hurley asks Miles how you spell bounty hunter, Miles asks what he's doing, writing memoirs, Hurley says it's personal, asks Miles dude, did you just, you know, it stinks, Miles says no, Hurley says well it wasn't him, Miles says so roll down window, Hurley does, but says it's not him, it stills stinks in here, it's coming from back there, Miles says maybe it's his famous garlic mayo, Hurley says that's not possible, okay maybe it is possible, tells Miles to pull over, he has to check, Miles says he's imagining things, Hurley says if those sandwiches are bad, people could get sick, yells for Miles to pull over, Hurley goes in back to check, looks through things, smelling, finds the body, says dude there's a body bag back here, with a body in it, Miles says that's traditionally what you put in a body bag, Hurley asks well who he is, what happened, Miles says don't worry about it, and don't tell anyone you saw him, Hurley asks what happened, Miles says his name is Alvarez, he was digging a hole, and thinking about some chick named Andrea, then he felt this sharp pain in his mouth, which turned out to be a filling from his tooth being yanked right out of its socket, and blowing through his brain, then he was dead, Hurley asks how does a filling get blown through someone's head, Miles says let's go, Hurley asks how he knows all of this, Miles says because he knows, Hurley asks but how does he know what he was thinking, Miles says he just knows, Hurley says he can talk to dead people, Miles says please just go, Hurley says don't worry dude, your secret's safe with me, you want to know why, Miles says no, Hurley says because he can talk to them too. 16. Miles with man, looking at picture of boy in a football uniform, says if you don't mind, Mr. Gray, can you tell me what happened to him, he says last Labor Day weekend, a drunk driver ran a red light, Miles asks how his son was buried, Mr. Gray says he cremated him, scattered his ashes around the football field at his school, Miles says that what he does, it's much better if there's a body, Mr. Gray says but his ad said, he could communicate with the dead, any time, anywhere, Miles says he knows what the ad said, Mr. Gray says he just wants him to ask, did he know that he loved him, Miles says it's going to cost extra, Mr. Gray says of course, gives him more money, Miles says okay, now give him his hands, he says to concentrate on Russel, just get a picture of him in his head, asks can he do that, Mr. Gray says yeah, Miles focuses, Mr. Gray asks did it work, Miles says his son says that he knew that he loved him, that he always knew, Mr. Gray says thank you, Miles says I'm sorry for your loss.
17. "For what I do, it's much better if there's a body." Miles

Miles leaving Mr. Gray's house, putting his things in the trunk of his car, Naomi approaches him, asks if he's Miles Straume, introduces herself as Naomi Dorrit, says her employer has been following his work for some time now, and he's interested in following his rather unique services, she says there's a restaurant not too far from there, asks Miles if he wants to hear what she has to say, Mile says yes, absolutely, he leaves with her. 19. "Hi. My name's Naomi Dorrit. [Naomi hands Miles a business card.] My employer's been following your work for some time now, and he's interested in retaining your rather unique services." Naomi
20. On island, Roger drinks a beer on the swing-set, Kate sees him, decides to join him, says hey Roger, asks if he's okay, Roger says let me see, well my son got shot, and now he's disappeared, so I think I'm pretty far form okay, Kate says you know I'm sure things are going to work out, Roger say well thanks for the pep talk, Kate drinks a beer with him, says she just has a feeling he's going to be okay, Roger seems surprised by this, asks what she means, a feeling, Kate says she just doesn't think that he should give up hope, Roger asks if she knows something, does she know what happened to his son, Kate says no she doesn't, Roger says wait a minute, why is she so interested in his son, Kate says she's just trying to help, Roger says if she wants to help, why doesn't she just mind her own business, Kate leaves. In the DHARMA van, Miles and Hurley listen to Love Will Keep Us Together, Hurley writes in his notebook, says he doesn't know why Miles won't just admit it, that he can trust him, he talks to lots of dead people, Miles says so he has conversations with them, like they're his pals, Hurley says sure all the time, sometimes they even play chess, Miles says he actually sees them, Hurley says why wouldn't he, Miles says because that's not how it works, Hurley calls him out, says he wouldn't know how it works if he didn't do it, Miles says what he can do has nothing to do with chatting with ghosts, that it's a feeling, a sense, when somebody's dead, their brain stops functioning, it's just who they were and how they died, Hurley says that's not how it works for him, Miles says good, he's happy for him, Hurley says he's just jealous his powers are better than his, they're here, Miles says shut the hell up and deliver is damn sandwiches.
22. "I don't know why you just won't admit it. You can trust me. I talk to lots of dead people." Hurley "So, you have conversations with them, like they're your pals?" Miles "Sure, all the time. Sometimes we even play chess." Hurley "You actually see them?" Miles "Of course. Why wouldn't I?" Hurley "Because that's not how it works." Miles "Aha! You wouldn't know how it works unless you can do it." Hurley "What I can do has nothing to do with chatting with ghosts, you nitwit. It's a... feeling... a sense. When somebody's dead, their brain stops functioning, which means there's no more talking. There's just who they were and whatever they knew before they died." Miles "That's how it works for me." 23. They're at The Orchid, they get out of DHARMA van, Pierre Chang is there, Hurley begins to unload his food, Pierre comes over, he asks Miles what Hurley is doing there, Miles says he came to deliver lunch to the work crew, Pierre says lunch, his instructions were to come alone, Hurley says don't worry, that he won't tell anyone about the body, Pierre asks he knows, Miles says he was rooting around the back, he saw it, Hurley says don't worry he can keep a secret, Pierre says he better, Hurley, because if he thinks working in the kitchen is bad, Hurley says he likes working in the kitchen, Pierre asks well how does he feel about polar bear feces, because if he breathes one word of this, he'll have him shipped off to Hydra island, so he can weigh turds for their ridiculous experiments, Hurley says gross, Pierre says you two, talks to two men who work at The Orchid, tells them to take the package inside, and you, Miles, stay here until he gets back, says think you can handle that, Miles says yes sir, men take the body out of the trunk, Hurley says dude that guy is a total douche, Miles says that douche is my dad. Miles tells Naomi she did say she was taking him out to dinner, Naomi says no, she said she was taking him to a restaurant, they go into a restaurant kitchen, which is closed, Miles says want to tell him what's back here, Naomi says his audition, there's a body on the table, Naomi unzips it, Miles says look, whatever she has going on here, this isn't really his thing, Naomi says from what she understands, if the price is right, this is exactly his thing, she tosses Miles some money, Naomi asks so what can he tell her about this man, Miles goes over to the body, he focuses on it, gets his feeling, he says that his name was Felix, he was on his way to deliver something to a guy named Widmore, Naomi asks deliver what, Miles says a bunch of papers, photos, pictures, of empty graves, a purchase order for an old airplane, Miles says so did he pass, Naomi says she's leading an expedition to an island, and on that island is a man that will be very difficult to find, that's why she needs him, Miles says why, Naomi says this island has a number of deceased individuals residing on it, as is this man was the one responsible for the deceased, we believe they can supply valuable information about his whereabouts, Miles says as much as hunting down a mass murderer sounds really safe, he's going to pass, Naomi says her employer is willing ot pay him $1.6 Million, Miles says when do we leave. 25. "His name's Felix. He was... on his way to deliver something to, uh... [The whispering continues.] A guy named... Wid-more." Miles "Deliver what?" 26. "I'm leading an expedition to an island, and on the island is a man that will be very difficult to find. That's why I need you." Naomi "Need me for what?" Miles "This island has a number of deceased individuals... residing on it, and as this man is the one responsible for their being deceased, we believe they can supply invaluable information as to his whereabouts." 27. Miles and Hurley, Hurley has a sandwich, says so anyway, Miles says he doesn't want to talk about it, Hurley says are you kidding me, how weird is it that your dad is that dude from all those movies, only back then, he was called Marvin Candle, asks if that was like a stage name, Miles says he doesn't want to talk about it, Hurley asks if he doesn't want to talk about it, then why did he tell him, asks how long he's known he was his dad, Miles says the third day they were there, he was in line at the cafeteria and his mother got in line behind him, that was his first clue, Hurley says but all the DHARMA dudes end up dead, Miles says he can't save them, that they're going to get killed no matter what he does, so why bother, Pierre Chang shows up.
28. "But all those DHARMA dudes end up dead. Don't you wanna... save him?" Hurley "I can't save him! They're gonna get killed no matter what I do, so why bother?" Miles
29. Pierre says he needs Miles to take him to Radzinsky at the worksite, immediately, he says you, Hurley, if you say a word, Hurley says polar bear poop, got it, Miles asks what happened to the body, Pierre says what body, the three of them get in the van.
30. Jack cleaning a classroom, Roger comes in, says this room is on his rounds, why is he here, Jack says he figured he'd cover for him, after what happened to his son, Roger says which part, that he got shot, or that someone kidnapped him from the Infirmary, Jack says then what is he doing there, Roger says what else is he going to do, sit around and pray that those idiots find his boy, Roger says so he can get out of there, knocks things over, Roger says he came in here a couple of a days ago with that woman, Kate, Jack says yeah, Roger says you know her at all, Jack says why, Roger says she has some kind of weird thing for his kid, first she shows up at the Infirmary and gives his kid blood, and then when he goes missing, she comes to him and says don't worry, he's going to be okay, Roger says I'm going to tell you something, I'm beginning to think that she's got something to do with this, he says that he should go to Horace, report her, he asks Jack what do you think, Jack says he thinks that he's had a hell of a day, and that's giving him a very good excuse to go out and get drunk, and maybe that's put some crazy ideas into his head, he says that he knows that woman, Kate, that she's his friend, and she would never do anything to hurt his son, Roger says sure, he leaves.
31. "I think, Roger, that, uh, that you've had a hell of a day, and that... it's given you a very good excuse to go out and get drunk. Maybe that's put some--some crazy ideas into your head. I know that woman--Kate. She's my friend, and she would never do anything to hurt your son." Jack 
32. In the DHARMA van, Hurley says that he's new here, Dr. Chang, asks what exactly it is he does down at The Orchid, Pierre says it's classified, Hurley says really, that he can't tell anyone, not even his wife, Pierre says no, Hurley asks what about his kids, Pierre says he has a three month old son, so no, Hurley says congrats, asks what's his name, Pierre says Miles, Hurley says small world, his name is Miles too, right Miles, Miles says yeah, Hurley asks so are you a fan of Jazz, Dr. Chang, like Miles Davis, Pierre says no, that his wife is, he says he likes Country, Miles scoffs at this, Hurley says so they've both been there three years, that they must be pretty tight by now, Miles says that Dr. Chang and him don't exactly travel in the same circles, Pierre says he wasn't aware there were circles, Hurley says great, that they should all get together for a beer some time, he says how awesome would that be, Pierre says to stop here, he gets out of the van, he opens a hidden gate camouflaged in jungle, he gets back in the van, they go in. 33. "So I'm new here, Dr. Chang. What is it exactly you do at The Orchid?" Hurley "It's classified." Dr. Chang

Inside, there is a construction site, Chang gets out, says Miles doesn't need to wait, that he'll get a ride back with Radzinsky, Hurley asks what is this place, what's up with all the secrecy, Miles says he doesn't know and doesn't care, Hurley looks, he sees the hatch door, a guy asks what the serial number that goes on hatch lid is, another guy says it's 4 8 15 16 23, can't read the last number, says it's smudged, Hurley says that it's 42, Hurley is freaked out, Miles asks how the hell he knew that, Hurley says because they're building their hatch, Miles asks what hatch, Hurley says the one that crashed their plane. 35. "Dude, what is this place? And what's up with all the secrecy? " Hurley 
36. "Hey, Glenn! What's the serial number that goes on the hatch lid?" Worker "4, 8... [The first worker picks up metal stamps and pounds them into the metal hatch lid with a heavy mallet, one by one.] 15...16...23... Hold on a minute. It's smudged." Glenn "42." Hurley "42." Glenn "How the hell did you know that?" Miles "'Cause they're building our hatch." Hurley "What hatch?" Miles "The one that crashed our plane." Hurley  
37. Miles gets a taco, a van drives up next to him, a man says hey Miles, Miles asks do I know you, they get out, take him, put him in the van, drive off, Miles, my name is Bram, Miles says he owes him a fish taco, Bram says sorry about that, but his apartment is being watched, and they had to try their best to talk him out of working for Charles Widmore, Miles says he has no idea who that is, Bram says he's the man that chartered the boat he'll be getting on next week, and my friend, you don't want to be getting on that boat, he asks Miles do you know what lies in the shadow of the statue, Miles says no, he can't say that he does, Bram says he's not ready to go tot hat island, but if he goes with them, all those things he spent all his life trying to find out, he'll know, he'll know who he is, why it is he has a gift, and most of all, he'll know about his father, Miles says he doesn't know where he's been getting his intel, but he stopped caring about this father a long time ago, but he says that what he does care about is money, he says tell you what, if he wants him to pass on going to the island, it's going to have to cost him double, $3.2 million, Bram says they're not paying him anything, that all the money int he world isn't going to fill that empty hole inside him, Miles says that's sad isn't it, Bram says to toss him, they throw him out of van, Bram says that he's playing for the wrong team, Miles says what team are you on, Bram says the one that's going to win. 38. "Sorry about that, but your apartment's being watched. And we had to try our best to talk you out of working for Charles Widmore." Bram "I have no idea who that is." Miles "He's the man who chartered the boat you'll be getting on next week. And, my friend, you do not want to get on that boat. Do you know what lies in the shadow of the statue?" Bram "No, can't say that I do." Miles "Then you're not ready to go to that island. But if you come with us--all those things you've spent your life trying to find out? You'll know. You'll know who you are, Miles--why it is you have a gift, and most of all, you'll know about your father." Bram "I don't know where you've been getting your intel, but I stopped caring about my father a long time ago. What I do care about is money. So, I'll tell you what. Miles in DHARMA van, Hurley says that hatch that they're building, there's going to be an accident, and then they're going to have to build a computer with a button you have to push every 108 minutes so the world doesn't end, Hurley says so your dad, is he around, you know, where we came from, the future, Miles says no, Hurley says then this is kind of awesome, Miles says how is that awesome, Hurley says because then he gets to hangout with him, he can get to know him better, and don't bother thanking him, but he was totally down for that beer, Hurley  says maybe he can hold baby him, or he can change his own diaper, Miles stops short, he says to listen up, because they're only going to have this conversation once, okay, Miles says he doesn't want to hangout wit his dad, he doesn't want to get to know him better and stuff, Hurley asks why not, asks did he beat him up when he as little, Miles says he wasn't even around when he was little, that he never even knew him, until now, Miles asks why am I even telling you this, Hurley says because he's in pain, Miles says he's not in pain, that his father is dead, he's gone, he never cared about him, and nothing he can do will ever change that, Hurley says but he's not gone, they just dropped him off, Miles says let's see what's going on with you, takes his notebook, gets out of the van, he reads it, "EXTERIOR, HOTH, a little spy robot thingy zips through the atmosphere, and crashes into the snowy planet below. That's when Chewbacca shows up and blasts it away with his crossbow laser. He shakes his fury fist in the sky in triumph. CHEWBACCA--Raaar." Hurley says it's furry fist, that he needs a spell-check, Miles asks what the hell is this, Hurley says he's writing The Empire Strikes Back, Miles says what, Hurley says it's 1977, so Star Wars just came out, and pretty soon, George Lucas is going to be looking for a sequel, he says that he's seen Empire like 200 times, so he figured he'd make life easier, and send him the script, with a couple of improvements, Miles says that has got to be the stupidest thing he's ever heard, Hurley says oh Yeah, well at least he's not scared to talk to his own dad.
41. "That hatch they're building? There's gonna be an accident, then they're gonna have to build a computer with a button you have to push so the world doesn't end." Hurley

Sawyer goes home, Juliet says he's back, Sawyer says barely, asks if she's ever had one of those days where you feel like a little Dutch boy with your finger in, he notices Jack is there, says what's going on, Jack says Ben's father thinks that Kate had something to do with his son going missing, Sawyer asks why the hell would he think that, Juliet says because she talked to him, tried to make him feel better, Sawyer says why the hell would she do that, Jack says her heart was in the right place, Sawyer says but where was her head, Jack says he had a talk with Roger, doesn't think he's going to say anything to anyone for now, just wanted him to know, Jack tells Juliet thank you, Sawyer says thanks for filling him in, Jack leaves.
45. Sawyer goes outside, Phil comes over, says hey boss, they have a development, that he better come down to the office, La Fleur says he's been running around the jungle all day, so whatever development he's got, it can wait a while, Phil says he knows who took the kid, La Fleur asks who's that, Phil says you, La Fleur says he's got a perfectly good explanation for that, he escorts Phil inside, asks him if he's talked to Horace about it yet, Phil says no, that he thought that after three years of working together, he'd give him the benefit of the doubt, Sawyer knocks him out, tells Juliet to get some rope. A man raking leaves, Mr. Gray, Miles comes back, says he hopes he doesn't mind, says his gate was open, he says Mr. Straume, of course, no problem, Miles comes with bag packed, Mr. Gray asks what brings him by, Miles says well sir, he's about to go on a boat trip for a while, wanted to give this back to you, he hands him an envelope with money, Miles says he lied to him, he wasn't able to talk to his son, Mr. Gray asks why tell him this, that he could've just let him go on believing, Miles says it wouldn't have been fair to his son, Mr. Gray says sorry, Miles says if he needed his son to know that he loved him, he should've told him when he was still alive, Miles leaves.

Back at the barracks, Miles and Hurley get out of the van, Hurley says sorry he said he was afraid to talk to his dad, Miles says don't worry about it, Hurley says he used to hate his dad too, he tells Miles that he left when he was 10, but the best thing he ever did was give him a second chance, and they got to be the best of friends, and although he'll never see him again, he misses him and he knows that he feels the same way too,  Miles says that his dad didn't leave when he was 10, he was a baby, he never knew him, and he doesn't want to, not happening, Hurley says that was Luke's attitude too, in Empire, Luke found out that Vader was his father, and instead of putting away his lightsaber and talking about it, he overreacted and got his hand cut off, he says they worked it out eventually, but at what cost, another Death Star was destroyed, Boba Fett got eaten by the Sarlacc, and they got the Ewoks, it all could have been avoided if they all just communicated, and let's face it, the Ewoks sucked, dude.

• What caused a filling to be shot through Alvarez's brain? Was the electromagnetic field somehow reversed, forcing it to be pulled out of him?
• Why did Miles' mom lie about her husband, Pierre Chang?
• Why did Miles and his mother leave the island? Did Chang make them leave?
• Since Hurley's "powers" are different than Miles' powers, is he really seeing and talking to dead people or are they really just the smoke monster?
• Kate, why didn't you just straight-up tell Roger you stole his damn kid?
• Speaking of Ben, when is he coming back and how are they going to explain it?

Notes:

• Now we finally know why Miles asked Ben for $3.2 million.
• All of the exchanges between Miles and Hurley as of late have been brilliant.
• Miles had a punk phase. It all makes sense now.
• It's nice to see that Miles has a human side and a conscience, and this episode also explained a lot of why he is the way that he is.
• I love the title of this episode. It's a big step up from the past couple of titles.
• Daniel Faraday is back! Now where the hell was he?
• The apartment where Miles finds the dead body was #4.
• Hearing dead people constantly must be pretty annoying.
• The microwave clock reads 3:16.
• Your young mom getting in line behind you in the cafeteria must be freaky.
• Miles, you only had one job. Erase that damn tape!
• Also, Juliet and Kate, how about hatching yourselves up a better plan than just standing around and talking eachother up and not looking worried at all?
• We finally find out that it was Widmore who faked the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 and not Ben who did it, which was a cool find.
• I love how Jack has no purpose whatsoever now.
• Miles was disgusted that his father likes country music.
• I think Bram and Ilana are working for a new Dharma Initiative, which explains the question "What lies in the shadow of the statue?," which was much like "What did one snowman say to the other snowman?," a code to figure out if someone is one of them.

Even though not much happened in this episode, and was just kind of a fun one, I enjoyed it.

Jack, working at St. Sebastian's, with patient Ms. Berenberg who leaves, he sees someone walking, looks like Christian Shephard, Erika asks him to take a look at an x-ray on the L4, he gets a call from Dr. Stillman, he's from Santa Rosa, he says Hurley refuses to take meds, stopped sleeping, and therapy is useless because he thinks his doctor doesn't exist.
15. Jack goes to visit, asks why he isn't taking his meds, Hurley says they're dead, the Oceanic 6, that they never get off Island, he asks Jack what he did today, and Jack says that he woke up, took shower, he and Kate fed the baby, Hurley says he thought Jack didn't want anything to do with Aaron, Jack says he changed his mind after the trial, Hurley says everything is perfect, just like Heaven, living with Kate and and taking care of Aaron, Jack says just because he's happy doesn't mean it's not real, Hurley says he was happy too, but then he saw Charlie, that he likes to sit with him on the bench out on the front lawn, yesterday Charlie told him that Jack would be coming by, he wanted Hurley to give him a message, that he made him write it down, the note says "You're not supposed to raise him, Jack," Hurley asks if he thinks that means Aaron, Charlie also said someone will be visiting Jack soon too, Jack gets upset and leaves.
16. "I was happy, too, Jack... for a while, anyway. Then I saw Charlie. He likes to sit with me on the bench out on the front lawn. It's pretty cool, actually." Hurley From Lostpedia

Notes:

1. Jack steps on a Millennium Falcon, which is yet another Star Wars reference.
2. The toy can also be a reference to Sawyer, who had made several Star Wars references himself throughout the series. Jack also exclaims "Son of a bitch!" which is a Sawyer line.
   
3. When Jack is seen shirtless in the flashforward, he has a scar where his appendix would be. Obviously this is shown for continuity, but there was a big deal made over the fact that Matthew Fox had shaved his chest and stomach for this episode, when he was clearly hairy previously. Kate also says that she bought Jack a razor in the same scene. Obviously the chest-shaving was done to show the scar from his surgery in this episode, which was revealed in the flashforward before we knew that it happened on the island.
4. I always wonder what exactly Jack is responding to when he scoffs at the newspaper and exclaims "A-Rod."
5. The Yankees/Red Sox series, to my memory, occurred in August of 2006.
   
6. This is not my favorite episode ever. In fact, I think it's one of the weakest of Season 4. Maybe it's just that I don't enjoy Jack or Kate flashes so much anymore. I'd rather learn about characters that I don't know that much about yet. However, I love the scene with Hurley. Jorge Garcia's serious acting is so underrated.
   
7. When Jack is supposed to work on someone with an L4 vertebrae problem, obviously he was familiar with it already, because he operated on Ben who had a tumor on his L4.
8. Jack gets a prescription for Clonazepam. Hurley asked Sawyer for Clonazepam in Dave. He said he needed it so that he wouldn't see things. Now Jack is the one seeing things and taking pills.
   
9. Jack is looking pretty freakin' crazy right here. This is one of Jack's craziest Crazy-Jack moments.
10. The title comes from something Bernard says to Jack during the surgery, "dream of something nice back home."
    
11. In Raised by Another, Richard Malkin told Claire that she was the only one who could raise the baby, but she wanted to give it up for adoption, when she decides not to, he then changed his story and told her that there was a couple in Los Angeles that would adopt the baby. He said "They're not strangers. They're good people." Now, there is a couple in Los Angeles raising Aaron. Was Richard Malkin somehow talking about Jack and Kate?
12. You didn't save Kate, Jack. What the hell is wrong with you? Sawyer saved her more than you did.
13. Why in the hell did Keamy bury Danielle and Karl's bodies face up, showing through the dirt? Not only is he a ruthless kill, but he's lazy too.
14. Uh, usually the Smoke Monster beats the crap out of people and kills them. Those guys had a few scratches.
    
15. Hurley states that someone will be visiting Jack as well, this is reminiscent to ghosts visiting Scrooge in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
    
16. This episode was the second time Kate's identity was revealed in a shower scene. Not complaining.
17. Sawyer's evolution to leader begins, and Jack's drug addiction begins.

4.08 Meet Kevin Johnson

1. Locke's camp has a meeting, Locke says there will be no more secrets, he brings Miles in, and Miles they're there for Ben, Sawyer wants to turn Ben over to them, but Locke says no, Ben says that once they have him, they'll kill everyone else on the island, that Michael is the man on the boat, everyone is shocked at this news.
2. On the freighter, Desmond and Sayid are asleep, an alarm goes off, they wake and go to the deck, the Captain says no one leaves the ship without his say so, he's beating two of his crew members for trying to leave and go to the island, he calls Michael to clean up.
3. Sayid approaches Michael, questions why Michael is on the boat, says he's there to die.
4. Sawyer approaches Locke after the meeting, who is bringing Miles back to the boathouse, he questions the $3.2 million Miles asked Ben for, but Locke says he doesn't think he'll be able to get it since there isn't a bank on the island, Miles says he'll find a way to get it.
5. Ben gives Alex a map to The Temple, he says it's a sanctuary, that it may be the last safe place on the island, Karl asks why don't they know about it, Ben says that he doesn't tell everyone about it, that the rest of their people are already there, that they can get there in a day and a half, Karl says they all should go, but Ben says it's only for them, people are there to capture him, that they will use Alex to get to him, Rousseau agrees, Ben says they're more dangerous than him, tells Alex that her mother will protect her, they leave. In the morning, Sayid and Desmond find out that Michael is in the engine room, they go there, Michael is fixing the engine, asks Jeff to go get a pressure valve from the supply room, when he leaves, Sayid attacks Michael, wants to know how he's on the boat, Michael said he wouldn't understand, so Sayid says to start from the beginning. Michael goes to see Walt at his mother's house, but his mom says no, that Walt doesn't want to talk to him, that she thought he was dead, questions why they have different names, that Walt wakes up in the middle of the night screaming, they said their plane crashed in the middle of the ocean, wants to know why she can't tell anyone about him and Walt, that they were gone 2 months, that until he explains, he gave up his rights, Michael asks her to tell Walt that he loves him.

15. Michael goes back to his apartment, he tries to kill himself, but nothing happens, the gun is loaded, but no bullets come out, the gun jams.

Michael has the television on in the background, a Game-Show Host asks a Literature questions referring to the book, Slaughterhouse Five, and the contestant answers Kurt Vonnegut, but then the news interrupts the program, Michael hears that Oceanic Flight 815 was found, the wreckage, they say that there's little chance of retrieving the black box.
17. Michael goes to the hotel to meet Tom, who is now gay Friendly.
18. Tom says he doesn't make it to the mainland too often, Michael wants to know why the plane is at the bottom of the Ocean, Tom says it's not his plane, that it's a phony, that Charles Widmore staged the wreckage, doesn't want anyone else to find where the real plane is except him.
19. Tom asks Michael if the bullet bounced or the gun jammed, Michael says to prove it.

Notes:

1. So, Mr. Friendly is gay. I guess that's why Kate isn't his type, as he said in A Tale of Two Cities.
2. Michael's mother notes that he was missing for over two months, which tells us that time on the island and off the island are the same. It had been speculated for a long time that time on the island may lapse differently than the island world, but this is one of the many conformations that it hasn't.
3. Michael David Kelly claimed in an interview that it in fact was him that appeared in this episode, but obviously was digitally altered.
4. It made me kind of sad that Michael pawned the watch that Jin gave him. Jin attacked Michael for having the watch in House of the Rising Sun, but they built the raft together and quickly became friends, so Jin gave it to Michael. It was a symbol of how much they grew and their time on the island, and Michael goes and hocks it. Bastard!
5. I like how Tom has all the funny lines in this episode.
6. Michael knew Naomi was from Manchester because of Charlie.
7. When Michael sees Libby on the freighter, she is wearing the same clothing that she died in.
