Episode Analysis of 1.03 "Tabula Rasa"

My LOST re-watch and episode analysis will include major details from the entirety that is LOST, and will be written with the perspective of having seen everything already. You will be SPOILED if you read any further. It is far better if you learn the story of LOST for yourself, as it is meant to be seen. Trust me on this, and don't say that I didn't warn you first. This episode was written by Damon Lindelof, and directed by Jack Bender. It originally aired on October 6th, 2004.

This is a Kate Austen flashback-centric episode.

We begin at the beach, with survivors sorting through luggage. Claire is looking through papers. Jack is tending to the Marshal, Edward Mars.

3.15 Left Behind

1. Kate is being held in the rec-room, she hears someone coming, attacks Juliet, who lays her out, says she was just bringing her something to eat.
2. Kate's car broke down, being towed, Patsy Cline playing, will take 3 days to get her car fixed, fan belt, she's in Iowa.
3. Kate at the mechanic shop, she sees Cassidy running cons, Kate helps her out so no one calls the cops, buys one of her bracelets to convince a guy that they're real, Cassidy wants to know why she helped her, says she's stranded there for some reason and didn't want the guy to call the cops, she gives Kate a ride to town. 4. Locke goes to see Kate, who's playing backgammon, he says they captured him, but only temporarily, came to say goodbye, he's leaving with them, Jack has to stay behind like her, doesn't want to go home, says that he made a strong case for her, told them she was a good person, reliable, smart, honest, but they told him who she was, and what she'd done, that forgiveness isn't one of their strong suits, he wishes her good luck, says he's sorry, and leaves her there.
5. Hurley discretely tells Sawyer there's going to be a vote to banish him tomorrow, after the Nikki and Paulo thing, there's a consensus that he has to move half a mile down the beach, Hurley says that he needs to make amends, that there are benefits of being part of their society, that he can't even feed himself, he uses their latrine.
6. Kate eats her sandwich from the floor, she sees the Others, they are leaving the barracks, they're gathered, packing bags, putting on gas masks, a canister is thrown into the rec-room, Kate tries to escape, covers her mouth, but the gas gets her, she loses consciousness. From Lostpedia
7. Kate tells Cassidy that her name is Lucy, Cassidy says that's not her real name, that nex time she shouldn't think about it, Lucy says it's after a saint, says a few months ago, she killed her stepfather and escaped from a US Marshal, her father was a bad guy, she's in Iowa to talk to her mother, Cassidy says she'll help, tells her she fell in love with the wrong guy, that he took her life savings, they bond.
8. "I fell in love with the wrong guy. And then I gave him my life savings. He conned me, and embarrassed me. He was a bad guy. So, I'll help you get the meeting with your Mom, Lucy, because one of us deserves something good." Cassidy
9. Kate wakes up in the jungle, handcuffed to Juliet.
10. Sawyer tries to fish to prove that he doesn't need anyone, but he's unsuccessful at cleaning it, he wants Hurley to help him make amends, change the vote.
11. Kate steals Juliet's knife while she's unconscious, but Juliet wakes up, Kate tries to pick the handcuffs, says they're going back, that her friends are probably gassed, Locke came in and said goodbye, that they were all going somewhere.
12. Cassidy poses as Kate, goes to her mother's door, but the feds, the Marshal, come out, Cassidy says she's just selling bibles. From Lostpedia
13. Cassidy goes to meet Kate, says they questioned her for half an hour, 6 guys waiting there, that she doesn't know what she did to the Marshal, but if he ever gets his hands on her, it's going to be her or him, wants to know why, Kate tells Cassidy what she did, step-dad used to get drunk and beat up her mom, made it look like an accident, a gas leak, that she took out an insurance policy on the house, mom gave her up, she wants to know why.
14. Kate looks for a trial, asks why they're in the jungle, Juliet says Ben has a thing for mind-games, Juliet says she hopes that she's not dragging her all the way back there for him, he told her not to come back, and she ruined his chance to get off the island, Juliet and Kate have a chick fight, the monster comes, Juliet dislocates her shoulder, they run, Juliet asks what it is, but they hide in a tree, she sees the monster, it approaches them, it flashes, appears to take photographs, and it doesn't attack them. 15. Hurley tells Sawyer to make nice with Claire, that she's really influential, if she votes for him to stay, he's home free, tells him to show interest in Aaron.
16. Sawyer brings a blanket to Claire and Aaron, tells them he doesn't need it. From Lostpedia
17. Juliet says she's never seen the monster, that it's the 4th time her shoulder has been dislocated, wants Kate to pop it back in, says Jack saw Kate and Sawyer on the monitor, told them not to come back because she broke his heart. Kate isn't gentle, pops Juliet's shoulder back out, Juliet screams.
18. Sawyer and Desmond go boar hunting, Desmond says he's never said three words to him, asks about his angle, Sawyer says he has hearts and minds to change, have to give the people what they like, meat. They get a boar.
19. Juliet and Kate get going.
20. Cassidy goes to Diane's diner, spills soup on her, so Diane goes into the bathroom, Kate is there waiting for her, wants to know why, Diane says she thought maybe she was sorry, that you can't help who you love, that she'll scream if she sees her again, won't tell 2 men waiting outside, they've been following her for a month. 21. Kate says she doesn't know him, but Juliet says she knows all about Jack, where he was born, what his parents did for a living, that he was married, who he was married to, why he got divorced, how his father died, his height, weight, birthday, blood type.
22. Kate and Juliet hear the monster again, they run, fall in mud, come to the sonic fence, Juliet opens the handcuffs with a key she has, says the fence is off, Kate is reluctant but she goes to the other side, Juliet turns the alarm on, the monster approaches, but hits the fence and stops, then goes away, Juliet says they don't know what it is, but that it doesn't like the fences, she says that she was left behind too, spent the past 3 years of her life with them, maybe if she thought they were in it together, she wouldn't get left behind again. 23. Charlie likes the boar, Sawyer says he hopes remembers that at the vote later, but Charlie doesn't know what he's talking about, Sawyer figures Hurley out.
24. Hurley says he didn't con him, that he needs to be the temporary leader, says Jack didn't want it either.
25. "Jack's gone, Locke's gone, Kate and Sayid, you're all we got. And Paulo and Nikki dying, we all look to you. Then again you totally tried to steal the diamonds, but we wanted to look to you. Look around, you made everyone happy. Just for today, they can eat boar, laugh, and forget that they're totally screwed. And who did that for them dude, you." Hurley
26. Sawyer feeds everyone, they're all happy, he holds Aaron. From Lostpedia
27. Juliet and Kate return to the barracks, Kate gets Jack, Juliet gets Sayid, Kate says they all left because of her, that she should have listened to him, she says she's sorry, tells Jack that they left Juliet too, Jack says they go back now.
28. Kate wants to help Cassidy, she tells Kate she's pregnant, the baby is his, that she still loves him, Kate says to call the cops, have him locked up, tells her that her name is Kate.
29. Sayid says that he checked all of the houses, that there are no weapons, no trail, 50 people disappears into thin air, Jack says they should take what they can find and leave, Sayid says no Juliet, Jack says she's coming because they left her behind too.

1. Has Juliet seen the monster before?
2. Why did the monster take photographs of Juliet?
3. Why doesn't the monster like the fences? Why can't it go over the fence?
4. Why has Juliet's shoulder been dislocated so many times?

7. "How's your shoulder?" Kate "Awesome." Juliet
8. "[At the beach, Sawyer pours beer over the skinned boar as he cooks it] Ahaha!" Sawyer "Um, ah, its delicious. Just a little DHARM-A1 and paprika." Charlie "I hope you'll remember this little barbecue at your meeting later." Sawyer "Oh what meeting?" Charlie "Hurley told me about the vote." Sawyer "Vote? Since when did anyone around here vote?" Charlie
9. "You son of a bitch. There wasn't ever gonna be no vote." Sawyer "But, wasn't it nice, being nice?" Hurley "You tricked me into being decent? That's gotta be the lamest cons in the history of cons." Sawyer "It wasn't a con dude. If you're gonna be our temporary leader, you need to do some damage control." Hurley "Leader? Notes:

1. Sawyer was reading Watership Down again.
2. Although, Kate having a flashback entirely devoted to her meeting Cassidy and her mother telling her why she screamed in Born to Run, is kind of lame, I don't really mind this flashback.

3.06 I Do

1. Kate, hotel, wedding veil, policeman at door, her fiance.
2. Jack looks at x-rays, Juliet took blood tests, x-rays a week ago, borderline inoperable, the line goes away in a week, the operating room is equipped, with anesthesia, sterile, Jack didn't say he was going to do it, wants Ben to understand how he's going to die.
3. "You think I trust you? That I'm just going to do the surgery, and then I'm just going to HOPE that you let me go?!" Jack
4. Before wedding, 12 hours, been fast, Kevin, Kate is Monica.
5. Kate doesn't want to work alone, she's afraid to leave Sawyer behind.
6. Locke says bury Eko where they are, too many funerals, Sayid goes with Locke to get a shovel, Locke says monster did it, tells Sayid that he saw it once, that he believes Eko died for a reason, just doesn't know what it is yet, says they have to make a detour first.
7. "I believe in what I can see. But obviously you have. So, why don't you tell me what you think it is?" Sayid "Might be what brought us here." Locke
8. Compound breach, Pickett wonders if the doctor got out again, but it's Alex, wants to know where Karl is, don't believe them, she says to Kate and Sawyer, they're gonna kill Kate's boyfriend, just like they killed hers.
9. Juliet tells Pickett that the schedule's been moved up, Pickett says that it's supposed to be two weeks, asks if it's an order.
10. Juliet says Pickett will kill Sawyer, that she can do something to save his life, she tells Kate.
11. Monica in wedding dress, mother-in-law, gives her necklace that her mother gave her, she had 4 boys, Suzanne. Monica gets married in a church.
12. Kate goes to see Jack, they're both okay, Kate says they're outside in cages, making them work, something big, hauling rocks, he asks if they hurt her, says it's going to be alright, she says he has to do the operation, they didn't do anything to her, that they'll kill Sawyer if he doesn't, they'll let them go, she has to believe it. 13. Monica is grocery shopping, taco night, she s calls Edward Mars in hone booth outside, puts a timer on, he asks why she hasn't called, he says he thought they were friends, she doesn't want to run anymore, she loves Kevin, he asks if he knows who she is, says if she can stay put, settle down, he'll stop chasing her, the timer goes off, and she hangs up.
14. Pickett tells Sawyer and Kate to say what they have to eachother tonight.
15. Eko's funeral, Locke says "I'd like to think you died for a reason, Mr. Eko. I just hope that it's not too long before we find out what the heck it might be.Rest in peace, Mr. Eko Thank you for helping me find my..."
16. Locke sees a message written on Mr. Eko's Jesus stick, "Lift up your eyes and look North," and John 3:05 written underneath the passage. From Lostpedia
17. Kate tells Sawyer about Jack, Ben and the surgery, saving his life, climbs out of cage, Sawyer tells her no, that there's nowhere to go, that they're on another island, he didn't tell her so she'd believe they still had a chance, they have sex.
18. Kevin surprises Monica with Oceanic Airline tickets to Costa Rica, for their honeymoon, says they've been married 6 months, but he's been too busy to go. He leaves for work, works for the Miami Dade Police, Monica looks worried.
19. Kate admits that she loves Sawyer without actually saying it, he says he loves her too.
20. Jack hears a message on the intercom, that appears to be Alex, tells him to try the door, Jack discovers the monitoring room, 6 televisions, an armory, takes a gun, he sees Kate and Sawyer on a monitor, Ben shows, Jack says he'll do the surgery tomorrow, needs Ben's word that he'll let him off the island.
21. Monica takes a pregnancy test, it's negative.
22. Kate drugs Kevin when he's working on a fugitive recovery in Tampa, tells him she's a fugitive, on the run, for blowing up her father, that her name isn't Monica, she loves him, but she can't stay, drugged him so people wouldn't think he knew, didn't want him to lose his job, he collapses and she leaves, crying, gives him the necklace back.
23. Jack and Juliet begin Ben's surgery, before Ben goes under, he asks if Alex asked about him, Juliet says no, that they took her home last night.
24. Danny Pickett says the Shephard wasn't even on Jacob's list, then he leaves to kill Sawyer while Jack's doing the surgery on Ben, so no one can stop him.
25. Jacks begins the surgery, he cuts Ben's kidney sack, knocks one man out, Tom watches what's happening, in shock, Jack says if he doesn't stitch it up in the next hour, Ben will die. From Lostpedia
26. Sawyer and Pickett fight, Sawyer grabs Pickett's gun, but he says let go or he'll kill Kate too. Kate says no, don't do it, don't give up, but Pickett tells Sawyer to get on his knees, that he wants Kate to watch, but Sawyer tells Kate to close her eyes. Pickett tells Sawyer that he's killing him for Colleen, an eye for an eye. From Lostpedia
27. Tom radios in before Picket can do so, tells him to give the walkie to Kate, Jack says he'll kill Ben.
28. Jack tells Kate and Sawyer to go, hour head start, tells her when she's safe, to radio him and tell him the story that he told her on the day of the crash, if she doesn't call, he'll know something went wrong, and then Ben dies.
29. Kate doesn't want to leave without Jack.
30. "Kate, dammit, RUN!" Jack

Questions:

1. Why would Edward Mars stop chasing Kate if she settles down with Kevin? Isn't the point to put her in prison? Why is he so obsessed with her?
2. When did Jacob make a list? Who was on it? Why not Jack? Why Kate and Sawyer?
3. Did the Others hurt Kate?
4. Was the Tampa paperwork that Kevin was doing involved with Sawyer?

Notes:

1. Wrong Kate, you break the rocks, Sawyer hauls them!
2. This episode is probably my least favorite of the first 6 episodes of Season 3, and the supposed "cliff hanger" sucks, in my opinion. Especially considering the cliff hanger of Jack saying "Dammit, Kate, run!" was in every single promo for the episode. The only saving grace is Nathan Fillion.

2.09 What Kate Did

1. Sayid digs the grave for Shannon's body.
2. Sawyer says he loves Kate. Jack hears him.
3. Kate sees a black horse in the jungle.
4. Kate sitting on steps at a house, truck pulls up, lighter, she puts him to bed, gas explosion, drives away on a motor cycle.
5. Diner, Kate is 24, her mom, Diane, is a waitress, Wayne is her dad. Kate took out an insurance policy for the house.
6. "Just remember that you were here and you didn't see me." Kate
7. They have a funeral for Shannon at Boone Hill. From Lostpedia
8. Kate plays Patsy Cline in the hatch. "Why did you kill me?" Sawyer
9. Kate is buying a one-way bus ticket to Tallahassee, Edward Mars finds her, says her mom gave her up.

17. Michael asks Locke why he can't put the code in at any time, Locke says you can only do it at 4 minutes. Michael asks if he can take a look at the equipment in the Swan.
18. Eko tells Locke a story about the King of Juddah, Josiah, a temple in ruin, people worshiped idols, false gods. Josiah sent the secretary to treasury to rebuild the temple with gold. "We found a book." An ancient book, The Book of Law, The Old Testament, they rebuilt the temple with it.
19. Eko tells Locke they found a place like the Swan on the other side of the island, and they found a book, with the film strip inside of it, he gives it to John. From Lostpedia
20. Sun leaves Kate with Sawyer.
21. Military office, Sayid on television, Kate goes to see her dad, Same Austen, says she had photos of him in Korea up until 4 months before she was born. Wayne was her father.
22. "I didn't tell you because I know you'd kill him. And your mother loved him. You were 5 years old. I wanted to take you along with me. She wouldn't let me." Sam Austen From Lostpedia
23. Kate thinks she's going crazy, that Sawyer is Wayne.
24. "Can you hear me? Sawyer? Wayne? I'm probably crazy and this doesn't matter, but maybe you're in there somehow. But you asked me a question. You asked me why I--why I did it. It wasn't because you drove my father away, or the way you looked at me, or because you beat her. It's because I hated that you were a part of me--that I would never be good. That I would never have anything good. And every time that I look at Sawyer, every time I feel something for him--I see you, Wayne. It makes me sick." Kate

29. Jack and Ana Lucia have a drink.
30. Eko and Locke watch the film again.
31. "Do not attempt to use the computer for anything else other than the entering of the code. This is its only function. The isolation that attends the duties associated with Station 3 may tempt you to try and utilize the computer for communication with the outside world. This is strictly forbidden. Attempting to use the computer in this manner will compromise the integrity of the project and worse, could lead to another incident. 6. Why would a Marshal hunt Kate for years because she killed her alcoholic, abusive father?

Notes:

1. I was pretty disappointed with what Kate did after waiting two years to find out. She may be a murderer, but she killed her father under some reasonable circumstances. She was made out to be this cold-hearted killer that a US Marshal spent years following, and then all she did was blow up her alcoholic wife-beating father? I mean, come on!
2. There are differences between the original Orientation film and the revised version. From Lostpedia
3. I still don't understand what Edward Mars' personal vendetta against Kate is.
4. This episode is the first time where Kate and the Marshal, Edward Mars, meet.
5. Of course Kate drives a motor cycle!
6. Jack and Kate kissing. Yuck!

1.24 Exodus, Part 2

1. They arrive at the Black Rock, Rousseau leaves.
2. "What are we a couple of miles inland? A tsunami probably swept it here." Arzt
3. The Black Rock was a slave ship, in route to a mining colony on the eastern coast of Africa, Mozambique.
4. Arzt teaches about dynamite and nitroglycerin and then explodes handling the dynamite.
5. Jin meets man in airport bathroom, speaks Korean, works for Mr. Paik, says he knows that Jin was running away, that he must do his job and return or he will lose Sun. From Lostpedia
6. "How does a place this big never get discovered?" Michael
7. "Do you like to play games, John?" Jack "Absolutely." Locke
8. Claire notices scratches on Rousseau. "When did I do that? Why did I scratch you?"
9. Rousseau attacks Claire and takes the baby.
10. Charlie is attacked by a Drive Shaft groupie in his hotel room in Sydney.
11. "That's Steve. Scott's dead." Walt corrects Sawyer about Tracy sleeping next to Scott when she has a husband and 2 kids at home.
12. "I didn't write one. The only letter I wrote is to the man I'm gonna kill." Sawyer
13. Sayid and Charlie go after Rousseau.
14. Michael says that him having Walt was never part of the plan, he asks his mother to take him, Walt overhears his conversation. Locke passes in his wheelchair.
15. Michael teaches Walt how to steer the raft. "We're going approximately North by Northeast."
16. Sun tells Shannon that Boone died bravely.
17. "Do you think all this, all we've been through, do you think we're being punished?" Sun "Punished for what?" Shannon "Things we did before. The secrets we kept. The lies we told." Sun "Who do you think is punishing us?" Shannon "Fate." Sun "No one is punishing us. There's no such thing as fate." Claire
18. Sayid and Charlie run into beachcraft. Sayid says it's from Nigeria, 2 men dressed as priests, drug runners in disguise, plane loaded with heroin.
19. "Hope. I think hope's inside it." Hurley asks Locke what he thinks is inside the hatch.
20. Bird flying overhead appears to say "Hurley."
21. The monster attacks, everyone runs, but Locke pauses and stares at it, it tries to drag him underground. "Just let me go, I'll be alright." Locke tells Jack. From Lost Hatch From Lostpedia
22. Jin gives Michael the watch he was supposed to bring to Los Angeles.
23. Claire names the baby Aaron. "I don't know what Aaron means."
24. Charlie wounded by Rousseau's trap. Sayid seals it with gun powder.
25. Hurley is late for his flight. He's staying in room 2342. He encounters Charlie in the elevator when the doors open.
26. The numbers appear in Hurley's car on the way to the airport. From Lost Hatch
27. The plane is boarding in Gate 23. Hurley pays man $1600 for his scooter, passes soccer players with that numbers. Hurley is in seat 20G. From Lostpedia
28. "I thought I heard 23." Kate "Does that mean something to you?" Hurley "The guy who called the feds on me back in Australia did it for a $23,000 reward." Kate
29. Jack says the monster was going to kill Locke, but he says that it wasn't going to hurt him, that he was being tested.
30. "You're a man of science. I'm a man of faith. Do you really think this was an accident? That we, a group of strangers, survived? Many with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed in this place by coincidence? Especially this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason." Locke "And who brought us here, John?" Jack "The island. The island brought us here. This is no ordinary place, you've seen that, I know you have. But the island chose you too, Jack. It's destiny." Locke "Did you talk to Boone about destiny, John?" 1. We find out in a later episode that Claire scratched Rousseau when she saved her from the others.

5. Walt being taken on the raft is one of the first times I've been completely fooled on this show. I didn't see it coming at all.

1.22 Born to Run

1. Kate is on the run. She has several license plates from different states. She changes the color of her hair from blond to brown. She receives a letter at the hotel under Joan Hart. From Lost Hatch
2. "Drive Shaft's albums must have spiked when they found out I died in a catastrophic plane crash." Charlie
3. "The helicopters will come." Charlie talking to Kate about Michael getting them rescued.
4. Dr. Arzt says it's monsoon season, that the trade winds are going North, which is where they want to go.
5. Kate wants on the raft, to take Sawyer's spot. She says she spent a few summers crewing on J boats.
6. Kate's mom has cancer. She goes to Tom for help at the hospital.
7. Sayid takes Jack to the hatch as per Locke's request. From Lostpedia
8. It's been three weeks since Locke found the hatch. Jack wants to know why he didn't tell him.
9. "Maybe it was never meant to be opened from the outside." Sayid
10. Sawyer figures out that Kate was the prisoner on the plane and that she wants to take his spot on the raft so she can get away.
11. Michael is poisoned by something in his water. He thinks it was Sawyer.
12. Tom is Kate's childhood friend, or first love. He is a doctor, helps her with her mother, Diane.
13. Kate and Tom go to a field and dig up a time capsule. Inside a New Kids on the Block lunchbox is a hat, baseball, a tape labeled "Kate and Tom 1989" from August 15 of that year, and Tom's toy plane that he got when he went to Dallas by himself. From Lost Hatch
14. On the tape, Tom talks about getting married and having 9 kids, but Kate says they should leave.
15. "You always want to run away." Tom "Yeah, and you know why." Kate
16. Locke finds out about Kate from Hurley, because he suggests Kate might have poisoned Michael.
17. Walt tells Locke that he didn't poison his did, then Locke touches Walt to comfort him and he has some sort of psychic vision.
18. "Don't open it. Don't open it, Mr. Locke. Don't open that thing!" Walt "What thing?" Locke "Just don't open it!" Walt
19. Sawyer tells everyone about Kate being a fugitive and wanting to get on the raft so she can run.
20. Kate goes to see her mom at the hospital. "I'm so sorry for everything that I've put you through."
21. Diane screams for help and Kate runs with Tom, he won't get out of the car. Tom is shot by the security guard, Kate crashes into gold Pontiac Bonneville. Tom dies, Kate runs. From Lostpedia From Lost Hatch
22. Kate says she didn't poison Michael, but admits she was the fugitive.
23. "When we get rescued, we're gonna come back for everybody else, right?" Walt "The thing is, finding the island might be hard." Michael

26. Jack figures out that Sun is the one who poisoned Michael, trying to make Jin sick instead, so he wouldn't leave on the raft.
