3.05 The Cost of Living

1. Eko and Yemi steal food, a nun makes Eko give confession for stealing.
2. There is a close-up of Eko's eye, Sayid is back and he checks on Eko, who is unconscious, Hurley says he's been like that for a couple of days. From Lostpedia
3. Eko is having a dream of his brother, Yemi, scenes from The 23rd Psalm, confession, becoming a priest, the drug plane, Yemi in Eko's tent, with a lighter.
4. "It is time to confess, to be judged, brother. I will be waiting. You know where to find me." Yemi appears to light Eko's tent on fire. From Lostpedia
5. They save Eko from his burning tent, Eko says "My brother," then disappears.
6. Ben is wearing a robe, he asks Jack to go for a walk, gives him a robe to wear, Jack asks if it hurts, his neck, numbness in his fingers and toes, like pins and needles, but permanent, tumor on his spine, aggressive, no more walks, Ben says he has no idea what he's talking about, Jack says it must be his mistake.
7. Jack goes to funeral with Ben, Juliet says she hates funerals, Colleen on water, fire, Brenda Lee's I wonder plays on the loud speakers. From Lostpedia
8. Ben asks Juliet about x-rays and Jack, she says she didn't tell him.
9. Sayid and Locke talk about finding Jack, Desmond says he's pretty sure that the computer in the hatch was used to communicate with other stations.

11. Soldiers from the runway, where Yemi was shot and left in the drug plane, take Eko back to Yemi's church, where Eko finds a photograph of him and Yemi when they were young in Yemi's bible, he tells a woman that Yemi was called away, down South, emergency at refugee camp, says he will take Yemi's place there, in London too.
12. Eko and the monster, he sees a bloody man, afraid of him, then an alter boy that says "confess."
13. Locke, going to The Pearl, he asks people to go along, Nikki and Paulo.
14. Locke tells Desmond that Eko is heading for the plane that crashed on top of The Pearl station, Desmond says it's a coincidence.
15. "Don't mistake coincidence for fate." Locke
16. Eko washes his hands with holy water, the alter boy says he's not supposed to do that, that Father Yemi wouldn't, but Eko says that he is not Yemi.
17. Men arrive at Yemi's church, they're looking for him, but the boy's mother says the shipment is late, vaccine from Red Cross, they keep 20% and give the rest to Emeka and his men, for protection, Eko says that he's not afraid of them, but Emeka kills a blind woman, says he'll be back for the vaccine.
18. Eko stops at a stream to put dirt on his wounds and he sees the smoke monster, it leaves and Locke arrives with everyone else at the stream.
19. Juliet brings Jack a cheeseburger, Ben wants to talk to him, alone, doctor-patient confidentiality.
20. Ben says that they had a wonderful plan to break him, wear him down, gain his trust, he'd choose to do what they wanted him to, he'd get invested, Juliet resembles his ex-wife, plan was shot when he saw the x-rays, wants him to want to save his life, wants him to think about it, 2 days after he found out about his tumor, a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky.
21. "Two days after I found out I had a fatal tumor on my spine, a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky. And if that's not proof of God, I don't know what is." Ben
22. Eko leads to plane, Locke asks about Yemi and Eko attacks him, saying not to speak his brother's name, Locke asks why he's so afraid.
23. They get vaccine every 6 months, agreement with militia, high price on black market, before Yemi, they got nothing, Eko reminds her of Yemi, says that he's a good man too.
24. Eko is selling the vaccine, and is leaving the country, to go to London.
25. Locke asks Eko about the monster, says he saw it once, a bright light, beautiful, while Eko checks the plane, says that's not what he saw, Yemi's body is missing. Locke says maybe his body burned when he set the plane on fire, and he gives Eko the cross he found. Eko looks at the photo of him and Yemi.
26. Emeka and his men come back to the church, figure Eko out about selling the shipment, they're going to cut off his hands, but Eko kills them with a machete, walks out of the church and everyone sees him.
27. They re-watch the Orientation film in The Pearl, Sayid says the wiring is only one way, that it's a closed system, Nikki says there are 6 stations, plays the tape of Dr. Mark Wickman, other monitors, Sayid tries to patch in another station, they see machines, a computer, in another station, a man with an eye patch. 28. Juliet apologizes, shows Jack a movie, talks to him while it's playing, but there is a message she's relaying to him on the screen, she tells him to do the surgery.
29. "I felt like I should apologize. Say I'm sorry. I'm sorry for bringing you here. And for everything that's been done to you. And your friends. You have to know we were desperate. It was only so that we could save his life. Ben. He's a great man. I know you find that hard to believe but he is. You probably feel like you don't have a choice. But you do, Jack. Free will is all we've really got, right? Anyway, just wanted to put in my two cents. I told you before, you can trust me. I want you to trust me, now, when I tell you that doing the surgery is absolutely the right thing for you to do. It's the right thing because he deserves to live." Juliet tells Jack while the video is playing and she's relaying a completely different message.
30. "Ignore everything I'm saying. Ben is a liar. And he is very dangerous. Some of us want a change. But it has to look like an accident. It has to look like we tried to save him. And that's up to you, Jack. It's a complicated surgery. No one would ever know. And I would protect you. Now tell me to turn off the movie." Juliet tells Jack on the movie. From Lostpedia

32. Eko goes to London, the alter boy asks if he's a bad man, that his mom says he's a bad man, they are boarding up the church, the woman tells him he owes Yemi a church.
33. Eko sees Yemi again, follows him, asks why confession now, he says he doesn't want forgiveness, that he had not sinned, Yemi appears to be a manifestation of the smoke monster, and the monster attacks Mr. Eko, while he starts reciting the 23rd Psalm. From Lostpedia

3. Why did the smoke monster seem frightened or skeptical of Mr. Eko in his previous encounter with it, but attack him now?
4. Where did the Others get their funeral rituals from?
5. Why would the island want Mr. Eko to die?
6. Is the glass eye found in The Arrow Mikhail's?
7. Again, why didn't Ben just ask Jack to do the surgery?
8. Why do Eko and Locke see two different versions of the monster? Can it appear differently to each person?
9. Why does Juliet ask Jack to kill Ben? If he doesn't, won't Ben die anyway?
10. If Eko had confessed, would he still have died?

Notes:

1. As much as I liked Mr. Eko, for some reason, I felt completely unaffected by his death. I'm still not sure why, because he's one of the characters I miss the most. It's unfortunate to find out that he was only killed because the actor no longer wanted to be in Hawaii.
2. You still owe Yemi one church, Mr. Eko!
3. The Others appear to be very cult-like in this episode with the funeral.
4. I love the actors that play young Eko and Yemi, who are really brothers.

3.04 Every Man For Himself

1. Desmond watching Claire and Aaron, says she has a problem with her roof, but Charlie and Claire decline his help, say the shelter is fine.
2. Jack watching cartoons, Juliet brings him blueberry pancakes, Jack says that maybe he should take to Ben, but Juliet says Ben isn't in charge, that they make decisions together.
3. Ben says he needs Juliet, that the sub is back.
4. The Others return with Colleen, Sawyer says they did it.
5. Sawyer's hatching a plan, the electrocution of Pickett, with water and the electricity from the machine in his cage, Kate's impressed, but she asks what about Jack.
6. "We've got to take care of us. It's every man for himself, Freckles." Sawyer
7. Sawyer in prison, boxing, Munson being bullied, ripped off the government for 10 million, they never found it, the warden is protecting him, Sawyer imprisoned for 9 months, says warden is buttering Munson up, then he'll use his wife against him, test book con.
8. Sawyer, 180 lbs., 35 years old, he tries to pull his electrocution trick on Ben, but Ben beats the crap out of him with his beating stick.
9. Tom says it's been 2 days since the sky turned purple, the comms are down.
10. Sawyer is strapped to a table, needle in sternum, Jack hears Sawyer screaming on the intercom in his cell.
11. Desmond asks Paulo for a golf club.
12. There is a bunny with a #8 painted on it, Ben shakes the cage, apparently kills it, says he put a pacemaker in it like Sawyer, 70 bpm resting heart-rate, 140 active, above that will cause Sawyer's heart to explode, gives him a pulse monitor, 15 beats within the danger zone, it starts to beep, can't tell Kate or he'll put one in her too. 13. Sawyer is brought back to his cage, where Kate asks what happened, but Sawyer says nothing, that he doesn't tell her everything. They give Sawyer and Kate something to wash off with, and her something new to wear. When Kate undresses, Sawyer's heart monitor goes off.
14. Cassidy Phillips visits Sawyer in prison, while Costanza sits by, talking to his wife. Cassidy turned Sawyer in, she tells him about daughter, that they live in Albuquerque, near the University, her name is Clementine, Sawyer says it's not his kid. From Lostpedia
15. Juliet asks Jack for help, brings him out, past the cages where Sawyer and Kate are being held, they sound an alarm and put a bag over Jack's head so he can't hear or see Kate and Sawyer yelling for him.
16. Jack is scrubbing up for surgery and sees x-rays, Juliet says they aren't hers, he tries to save Colleen, gives her CPR, but she dies, because they have no crash cart, Juliet says they haven't had anything happen, that it's broken. From Lostpedia
17. Danny Pickett beats the crap out of Sawyer for the death of his wife, Colleen, asks Kate if she loves him, she confesses that she does, and he stops beating Sawyer.
18. Sawyer reads Of Mice and Men, Munson wants him to move the money, says he wife hired a Private Investigator.
19. Kate climbs out of her cage, Sawyers says to leave him behind, that it's every man for himself, Kate says she only said she loved him, so Pickett would stop hitting him, Kate climbs back in, says it's live together, die alone, Ben watches on the monitors.
20. "I don't know what they did to you. But I know you're scared enough to lie about it. And that scares me more than anything that they have done to us before." Kate
21. Juliet tells Jack she's a fertility doctor, the woman who died was Colleen, Jacks asks about spinal x-rays that he saw, a man about 40, large tumor on L4 vertebrae, says that he's a spinal surgeon, he asks who he's there to see, who has the tumor.
22. Desmond pitches a lighting rod near Claire's tent, he watches nearby, as it starts to rain, there is a bolt of lightning that the rod catches, which almost hits Claire's tent. From Lostpedia
23. Ben takes Sawyer for a walk early in the morning.
24. Sawyer finds where the money is, he was working for the warden, Agent Freedman of the Treasury Department, the money, 10 million is in a red Bronco in a Stor-Quik Facility, Sawgrass, off 441, unit 23C, last 6 years of his sentence commuted, his commission, put in an account in Albuquerque, in the name of Clementine Phillips, with no way to find out where it came from.
25. Ben shows Sawyer another island, they're island, which they're no longer on, he has no pacemaker, they only put doubt inside him, the bunny was given a sedative, shows him a bunny with the #8 painted on it, Ben tells him that the island they're on is a small island roughly twice the size of Alcatraz, that there's nowhere to run, threatening Kate is what scared him, Ben quotes Of Mice and Men. 26. "We did all this because the only way to gain a con man's respect is to con him. And you're pretty good, Sawyer. We're a lot better. Funny thing is, us telling you about the pacemaker wasn't what kept you in line. It was when I threatened her. 3.02 The Glass Ballerina

1. Sun, as a little girl, breaks glass ballerina, blames it on the maid, tells her father, Mr. Paik, who says he has to fire her if she's the one who broke it. From Lostpedia
2. Jin says that Jack should be there already, Sayid wants to light another fire, but Jin says no, Sun says that she can sail, that she'll help Sayid.
3. Juliet brings Jack soup, Ben watches in a monitoring room, says that she never made him soup.
4. Colleen says that the Iraqi found the decoy village, Ryan radioed in, says they have a boat, they can find them, Ben wants it.
5. Pickett takes Sawyer and Kate out of their cages, gives them lunch.
6. Sun says she shouldn't have disagreed with Jin, that she doesn't want to be without him.
7. Sun and Jae Lee had an affair, he gives her a Pearl necklace, says he doesn't want to share her, her English is good, can go to America, Mr. Paik shows up.
8. Sawyer and Kate work for the Others, Kate chops rocks loose, Sawyer hauls them out, Pickett says they do anything wrong, they get shocked, Kate says she's not doing anything until she sees Jack, and Pickett shocks Sawyer.
9. Mr. Paik says Jae Lee stole from him, wants Jin to kill him, Jin says no, tries to quit, Paik says he soiled the family name, shamed him, manipulates Jin by calling him son.
10. Sayid, Sun and Jin arrive at the dock, Pala Ferry, Sayid says the dock is decaying, it's safe, wants to dock there, Jack will be able to see fire. From Lostpedia
11. Kate talks to Alex, she asks about Karl, says they're not supposed to be in those cages, says dress is hers, the she can keep it.
12. Sayid builds another fire, Sun knows he's lying, Sayid says they've been captured, tracks on the dock, fresh, as recent as yesterday, that the fire is for the Others, when they see smoke, send scout party, night, he'll ambush, take 2 hostage, one to make the other cooperate.
13. Jin tells Sun about the message he's supposed to deliver, she says don't do it, he says that he has to, that's what it takes to be married to her.
14. Jin figures Sayid out, asks him for gun, knows it's a trap, they want Sun to go to the boat, Sayid tells her about gun if the Others get past them.
15. "He says he understands English better than I think he does." Sun
16. "If they get past you, that means my husband is dead, and I won't care anymore." Sun
17. Juliet gives Sawyer her water, but he spills it out, he kisses Kate, he fights some of the Others, gets a taser but it doesn't work, then he gets one of their guns, but Juliet holds a gun to Kate, calls him James, Pickett shocks Sawyer. From Lostpedia
18. Sayid and Jin waiting in the trees, the Others sneakily on boat.
19. Jin at Seoul Gateway, threatens and beats the snot out of Jae Lee, who says he's sorry, knows that Jin is Sun's husband, but Jin only thinks he's there for Mr. Paik, feels guilty, he says leave country, never return, doesn't kill him, but Jae Lee commits suicide, jumps from the balcony and lands on Jin's car, with pearl necklace in hand. 20. Colleen knows who Sun Kwon is, that she's not a killer, she has 5 friends with her, says they're not the enemy, but she does shoot Colleen, shooting goes on between the Others, Sun and Jin, Sun escapes from the boat, falls into water, the Others drive off with the boat. From Lostpedia
21. Jae Lee's funeral, Sun goes, Mr. Paik shows up, says he does business with his father, that he won't tell Jin about the affair, it's not his place.

Kate and Sawyer are back in their cages, Sawyer says 2 guards have a real fight in them, heavy set guy packs a good punch, shaggy haired guy has Martial Arts training, zappers things have a safety, they've never seen any real action, the blonde would've shot Kate, no problem, Kate asks why she called him James, Sawyer says because that's his name, that they wait for them to make a mistake, Ben watches and listens on the monitors. Juliet brings a television into the other side of Jack's cell, he asks about Kate and Sawyer, Ben says they're fine and close, says if he cooperates, they'll send him home, Jack asks if that's where he sent Walt and Michael, why they'd be there if they could leave, Jack says they're stuck there just like he is, but Ben says they do have connection to the outside world.
28. "Your flight crashed on September 22nd, 2004. Today is November 29th. That means you've been on our island for 69 days. Yes, we do have contact with the outside world, Jack. That's how we know that during those 69 days your fellow Americans re-elected George W. Bush; Christopher Reeve has passed away; the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. [Jack starts laughing] What?" 2. Where did the Others come from when they got to the dock? Did they take the submarine? How could they get onto the sailboat without Sayid and Jin noticing?

4. How could the Others know a minute detail like Jack being a Boston Red Sox fan?

Notes:

1. I don't really understand how Danny Pickett went from the guy who said "See you in the funny pages" to Michael when he took blood from him, to so angry toward Kate and Sawyer when they're breaking rocks, even before Colleen dies.
2. I absolutely love the scene where Jack sees the Red Sox winning the World Series. It's probably the only scene, besides where Jae Lee commits suicide, that I like in this episode.
3. Upon initial reaction, I never thought that Sun pushed Jae Lee off the balcony, although I wouldn't put it past her, and can definitely see the symbolism.
4. It's really cool that LOST started the phrase, "That's why the Sox'll never win the Series," and it not only paid off in this episode, but the Red Sox, in fact, did win the World Series the same year that LOST aired and started using the phrase on the show, 2004. Coincidence?
